Indiana Conservation groups again have record year for conservation practices

Indiana landowners, for the second year in a row, set a record in the number of conservation practices to maintain soil health, according to the Indiana Conservation Partnership (ICP).

The ICP, which works with Hoosier landowners to provide technical or financial assistance for the implementation of conservation projects, recently announced its 2024 conservation accomplishments. In 2023, landowners supported by the ICP installed more than 50,000 new conservation practices, up 3,000 from 2022. Last year’s 47,000 conservation practices installed was also a record.

The ICP report showed that over the last year landowners helped prevent over 1.6 million tons of sediment, over 3.6 million pounds of nitrogen and over 1.8 million pounds of phosphorus from entering Indiana waterways.

(Indianapolis, IN)-The Indiana State Police is accepting applications for Chief Financial Officer to serve at its General Headquarters in Indianapolis.

The Chief Financial Officer will serve as part of the Department’s leadership team to develop, assist, and execute the ISP’s strategic financial and budget objectives. The Chief Financial Officer is directly responsible for the agency’s accounting, finance, auditing, forecasting, and oversight/management of program areas including, but not limited to, procurement, payroll, accounts payables, accounts receivable, budget preparation, state and federal grant accounting, and contract preparation and implementation. The position performs complex fiscal functions that require preparation, research, justification, analysis, review, accountability, and control.

A Bachelor’s degree in Management, Accounting or Finance is preferred.  At least seven (7) years fiscal related experience including management/executive level experience preferably with a governmental entity.  Master’s degree or higher, preferred but not required. Degrees of this type will receive consideration towards years of experience.  A resume must be submitted with application.

Pay starts at $120,016 per year but may be adjusted based on education, experience, and training. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, retirement plans and accrued time off.

SAUGET, IL – The Evansville Otters (6-14) certainly ended their five-game losing streak tonight against the Gateway Grizzlies (13-7) with a 21-4 win at Grizzlies Ballpark.

It was a massacre with the bats, as the Otters set season highs in runs (21), hits (23), home runs (four) and extra-base hits (nine).

Everybody in the starting lineup garnered at least one knock, with eight of the nine guys having a multi-hit performance. Seven Otters had multiple runs batted in and six men scored at least twice.

The Otters’ scoring began in the first with a pair of doubles from Mason White and Jomar Reyes. Gateway answered with a run in the bottom of the first.

Evansville retook the lead with a solo home run to left-center field from Randy Bednar in the second inning. Later, Blake Mozley smashed an RBI double to make it a 3-1 game.

In the bottom of the fourth frame, Gateway tied the game again with a two-run home run.

The final lead change of the night came in the fifth when the Otters put together two two-run shots from Mike Peabody and Bednar to take a 7-3 game.

The team added to their lead with a seven-run sixth frame. Two RBIs each came from Anthony Calarco and Riley Delgado on a pair of singles, and Bednar also had another RBI on a base hit.

The series between the Otters and Grizzlies concludes tomorrow. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. CT. Coverage is available on the Otters Digital Network and FloBaseball.

Otters ink local outfielder White

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Evansville Otters have signed Evansville native Mason White ahead of this weekend’s series at Gateway.

White, who grew up in Evansville, attended Evansville Central High School. He began his collegiate career at Southeastern Illinois College in the fall of 2018.

“We are excited to see Mason make the jump to professional baseball,” Otters field manager Andy McCauley said. “He takes good at-bats and makes himself a tough out each plate appearance.”

After a pair of seasons with the Falcons, White transferred to Indiana University Southeast. In his debut season with the Grenadiers, he hit for a .320 average with 65 hits, 13 home runs, 57 RBIs and 15 stolen bags. Things only got better in his senior campaign, where he put together a .430 batting average, with 95 hits, 65 runs scored, 19 home runs, 75 RBIs and 33 walks with just 32 strikeouts.

White has the defensive ability and speed to play anywhere in the outfield, spending most of his senior season in center or right field for the Grenadiers.

The Otters head to Sauget, IL tonight to begin a three-game set with the Gateway Grizzlies. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT and coverage is available on the Otters Digital Network and FloBaseball.

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office arrested an Evansville man this afternoon after he fled from a series of hit-and-run crashes and threatened a north-side homeowner.

Mr. Demetrius I. Glover caused three traffic crashes along North Highway 57 (SR-57), North Green River Road, and Millersburg Road shortly before 1:00 PM on Friday, May 31, 2024. During one of the incidents, a construction worker reported being nearly struck by Glover’s vehicle. Deputies in the area began searching for Glover’s gray Chrysler 300 sedan, which had fled from the scene of each crash. The Sheriff spotted the suspect vehicle at the intersection of St. George Road and US 41, where he observed Glover outside his vehicle inspecting the damage to his car. When the traffic signal turned green, Glover sped off with the Sheriff in pursuit. At one point the rear bumper cover fell off the vehicle and into the road. The Sheriff lost sight of the vehicle but was then directed behind the Mill Street Baptist Church by an Emergency Management Agency employee who witnessed the pursuit.

The Sheriff found the vehicle unoccupied but then noticed Glover carrying a handgun while walking between two residences on Pemberton Avenue. Glover refused commands to stop and ran behind houses with the Sheriff in chase. Glover made it to the woods east of Meadowridge Road and could not be immediately located. Sheriff’s Office deputies and Evansville Police Department (EPD) officers then formed a perimeter around the area Glover was last seen and began searching with K-9s. Glover’s handgun was then recovered outside a residence in the 4400 block of Meadowridge Road. An EPD officer later located Glover in the area of the Fairfax Road cul-de-sac and took him into custody without further incident.

Sheriff’s deputies later learned that during the search, Glover had threatened to kill a resident on Meadowridge Road if she called the police and altered them to his presence. After being transported by the Sheriff’s Office to the hospital for a blood draw and medical clearance, Glover was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail.

GREENVILLE, N.C. –  University of Evansville freshman starter Kenton Deverman tossed eight strong innings on Friday, and the Purple Aces used timely hitting to knock off the host and #16 national seed East Carolina, 4-1, in the first game of the Greenville (N.C.) Regional at Clark-LeClair Stadium in Greenville, North Carolina.

“What an incredible game for our program, for our fans, for our alumni, and for our University watching back home,” said UE head coach Wes Carroll.  “I knew that we were an older club, I knew that we have a lot of talent and I felt like we would be able handle that environment.  But, for a freshman (like Kenton Deverman) to go out and do it, I think that it was one of the most incredible performances that I have ever seen by a Purple Ace.

“Kenton was incredible on the mound for us today!  We also had some seniors step up in some very big moments for us offensively, and defensively, we got a couple of great plays from Mark Shallenberger and Ty Rumsey in the outfield.  Overall, I was really proud of the effort that our guys gave today.”

Deverman (9-1) was magnificent, limiting East Carolina to just a single run on three hits in 8.0 innings of work.  Deverman’s lone blemish was a solo home run in the fourth inning by American Athletic Conference Player of the Year Carter Cunningham, but aside from that, he allowed just two singles, and did not allow another runner to advance past second base in his eight innings of work.

Evansville gave Deverman the lead for good in the second inning, thanks to a walk from graduate first baseman Chase Hug, a single by graduate third baseman Brent Widder and a sacrifice fly by graduate catcher Brendan Hord.  Senior designated hitter Kip Fougerousse then gave UE a 2-0 lead in the third inning with a solo home run to left-center field for his team-leading 18th home run of the year.  Fougerousse has now homered in five of UE’s last six games overall.

Cunningham would answer with a solo blast of his own into a stiff breeze blowing in from right field in the fourth inning to cut the UE lead to 2-1.  The score would remain 2-1 until the ninth inning, when Evansville would rally for two insurance runs.  After a walk by Fougerousse and a single by Hug along with an ECU error, Widder drilled a two-run single to center field off of ECU closer Danny Beal to give UE a 4-1 lead.  In the bottom of the ninth inning, senior reliever Shane Harris worked around back-to-back one-out singles to post a scoreless frame, capped by a strikeout to clinch UE’s 4-1 victory.

Widder went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Fougerousse and Hug both had hits and scored a pair of runs each.  Overall, Evansville out-hit East Carolina, 6-5, in a well-played game in front of 5,628 fans at Clark LeClair Stadium.

With the victory, Evansville advances on to the winner’s bracket contest against the winner of tonight’s game between #2 Wake Forest and #3 VCU.  That game will take place on Saturday night at 5 p.m. central time and can be heard live in the Tri-State area on 107.1 FM-WJPS and seen live on ESPN+.  UE will bring a 36-23 overall record into Saturday’s game.
