Man Injured in ATV Accident (Warrick County) Â
Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating an ATV accident that occurred yesterday afternoon in Warrick County.
On Saturday, February 26 at approximately 2:10 pm, Reuben Rodriquez (25) of Dugger Indiana was operating a Polaris Sportsman ATV at Interlake SRA. It was reported that Rodriguez lost control of his ATV while attempting to ride up a steep hill. Â The ATV came down on Rodriquez and continued to flip down the hill several times.
Rodriquez was Life Flighted to St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville where he was treated for internal injuries. Rodriguez was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Responding agencies included Warrick County Sheriff’s Department, Warrick County EMS and Fire, Lynnville Fire, Pigeon Township Fire, and St. Mary’s Life Flight.

Give Forever Homes to Dogs and Cats Used in Research!

They’ve spent their lives in laboratory cages being experimented on so that researchers can make medical breakthroughs. Their sacrifices have saved countless human lives. The very least we can do is give them a chance at a happy life outside the lab. Right now we have a chance to help give these dogs and cats the loving homes they deserve. The Maryland General Assembly is currently considering the Humane Adoption of Companion Animals Used in Research Act. If passed, this bill would require research institutions to work with animal rescue organizations to find homes for dogs and cats used in research once they are no longer needed for experiments. When students in the Pet and Animal Welfare Society at Johns Hopkins University found out about the bill, they started a Care2 petition urging their state legislators to pass it immediately. Will you sign their petition? Johns Hopkins University, one of the largest research institutions in Maryland, is lobbying against the bill because they think it will be used to put restrictions on types of animal research they perform. The university also claims that the bill is unnecessary because they have their own adoption program for lab animals. While it is commendable that the university makes an effort to find homes for their research animals, the adoptions are still done on an ad hoc basis. Even Johns Hopkins University’s own students don’t think this is enough. A formal statewide adoption policy would ensure that every dog and cat used in research, not just some of them, has a chance to find a loving forever home. Similar legislation has been passed in California, Connecticut, and Minnesota. As a result, dogs and cats regularly transition successfully from their sad existence in the lab to a thriving life in a happy home. Scientists are still able to do their research, but the animals are saved from being needlessly euthanized. The Humane Adoption of Companion Animals Used in Research Act is a compassionate and rational piece of legislation. The only reason it hasn’t already been passed is because Johns Hopkins University has such a powerful lobby. So sign this petition today urging the Maryland General Assembly to pass this bill that could save thousands of animals’ lives for years to come. If enough of us speak out, we may be able to drown out the university’s objections. |
Arts Council Hosts Closing Reception For Black And White Exhibit
 The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana will host a closing reception for its all black, white and grayscale art exhibit, Art Noir, on Friday, March 10, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, and Sauced will cater and provide a cash bar.
The semi-annual event includes 51 pieces of art from 42 local and area artists. Artist who entered the exhibit could submit work in any media and with any theme; the only parameter was to work with a colorless palate.
The exhibit has been up at the Bower-Suhrheinrich Foundation Gallery since February 17, and will run through March 10. Most items are for sale. Interested buyers can receive more information by calling (812) 422-2111.
UIC edges women’s tennis, 4-3
UE travels to Cincinnati on March 3
CHICAGO – A battle that went down to the wire saw UIC earn a 4-3 win over the University of Evansville women’s tennis team on Sunday morning at Evergreen Racquet and Fitness.
“This was a close match and it came down to a third set at #5 singles to decide it,†Purple Aces coach Jayson Wiseman said. “I’m very proud of how hard we played all weekend, it’s just frustrating to give such a fantastic effort and all lose both matches on the weekend.”
Evansville picked up the opening point in doubles with Theodora Soldatou and Chicko Yamada earning a 6-3 win over Melika Leblanc and Rachel Le Comber at flight one. Diana Tkachenko and Nicoli Pereira were victorious at #3 doubles, defeating Georgia Sanders and Stefana Vasic, 6-4.
Tkachenko made the start at top singles and won the decision over Oana Manole, 6-1, 6-1. Daria Pentsova was victorious at #4 singles as she topped Bianca Zuzu, 6-4, 6-7 (0-3), 6-0. The biggest battle of the day was in flight five as Miranda Rodriguez got past Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
The Aces are back in action on March 3 at the University of Cincinnati.
Eagles split final day of MW Region Crossover
University of Southern Indiana Softball settled for a split on the final day of the Midwest Region Crossover. The Screaming Eagles opened the day with an 11-1, five-inning victory over Hillsdale College, but fell to Saginaw Valley State University, 4-3.
Senior catcher Haley Hodges (Portage, Indiana) and junior outfielder Olivia Clark-Kittleson (Carbondale, Illinois) each had four hits and a .667 batting average on the day to lead the Eagles, offensively.
Sophomore outfielder Caitlyn Bradley (Forest, Indiana) and sophomore second baseman Claire Johnson (Pittsboro, Indiana) had four and three RBIs, respectively, as USI ended the weekend with a 7-1 record.
Southern Indiana (7-1): 11, Hillsdale (3-5): 1
USI broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning when Hodges and senior shortstop Lexi Reese (Lebanon, Indiana) hit back-to-back solo home runs to kick-start an eight-run inning for the Eagles in their 11-1, five-inning win over Hillsdale.
Johnson’s two-run single later in the frame put the Eagles up, 4-0, while Clark-Kittleson’s RBI-single in the next at-bat put USI up 5-0. Bradley followed with a two-run single, while junior Alex Logan (Carleton, Michigan) wrapped up the inning with a pinch-hit, RBI-double.
Sophomore pitcher Courtney Atkisson (Bringhurst, Indiana) saw her bid for a no-hitter end in the fourth inning as Hillsdale’s Haley Lawrence homered to centerfield. Atkisson (3-0) earned the win after allowing the one run off one hit.
USI answered Hillsdale’s tally in the bottom of the fourth as Bradley had a two-run double to put the Eagles up, 10-1. The Eagles took advantage of an error to cap off the three-run fourth inning as they went onto the five-inning victory.
Saginaw Valley State (6-5): 4, Southern Indiana: 3
Despite getting solo home runs from Johnson and junior first baseman Marleah Fossett (Brownsburg, Indiana), the Eagles suffered their first setback of the season as Saginaw Valley State won, 4-3, on a walk-off passed ball in the bottom of the seventh inning.
USI took a 1-0 lead on Fossett’s solo shot in the top of the second inning. Junior third baseman Mena Fulton (Bloomington, Indiana) doubled in the next at-bat and scored two batters later on a throwing error to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Saginaw Valley State (6-5) cut the Eagles’ lead in half with a two-out hit in the bottom of the second inning, while a two-run home run with two outs in the fourth inning put the Cardinals up, 3-2.
Johnson’s solo home run in the fifth inning tied the contest at 3-3, but the Eagles failed to push a run across the plate in the sixth inning despite having runners at first and second with one out.
The Cardinals got a leadoff single from shortstop Meredith Rousse in the seventh. Rousse advanced to second on a wild pitch and went to third when Clark-Kittleson robbed third baseman Courtney Reeves of a home run.
Rousse eventually scored on a passed ball in the next at-bat to give the Cardinals the 4-3 victory.
USI returns to action March 4-10 when it travels to Clermont, Florida, to take part in The Spring Games.
Purple Aces draw Indiana State in opening game of Arch Madness

- ST. LOUIS– For the fifth time in six years, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team will face its final regular season opponent at Arch Madness as the Purple Aces will face Indiana State on Thursday.
Evansville clinched the #8 seed and will face the 9th-seeded Sycamores at 6 p.m. Thursday on the Missouri Valley Conference TV Network. It is also the second year in a row that UE will face Indiana State in the MVC Tournament. Last year, the Aces earned a 68-42 victory over ISU in the semifinals.
The squads split a pair of meetings this season with the games being decided by just three points. Indiana State took an 85-84 overtime win in Terre Haute on February 1 while Evansville held strong on its home court on Saturday, hanging on for a 65-63 win.
This year’s tournament is the second time the Aces have drawn the #8 seed. In 2007, UE faced #9 Drake, falling by a final of 82-68. Evansville and Indiana State have met four times in Arch Madness with the teams splitting the four games.
Men’s Tennis ends weekend with 5-0 win
The 34th-ranked University of Southern Indiana men’s tennis team picked up its third win of its road trip, defeating West Virginia Wesleyan 5-0 Sunday morning in Morgantown, West Virginia.
USI (7-4) started the day with a 8-3 win at number one doubles by sophomore James Hardiman (Backwell Bristol, United Kingdom) and freshman Denis Davydov (Chorvatsky Grob, Slovakia). Sophomore Andrew Dones (Georgetown, Indiana) and sophomore Ilia Karelin (Ekaterinburg, Russia) picked up the win at number three doubles, 8-6. Finishing off doubles with a 9-8 (6) win were senior Aaron Barris (Marietta, Georgia) and junior Samuel Kiladejo (London, England).
Hardiman tallied a win at number one singles, 6-3, 6-3, and Barris notched a 6-0, 6-4 victory at number four. The other four singles matches were not finished.
USI returns to the court on March 8 when they play Georgia College at 1:30 p.m. (CST) in Milledgeville, Georgia.
