Anti-Bullying Candlelight Vigil Scheduled for this Thursday at 5pm at EVSC Headquarters

  The Tri-State Alliance is encouraging members of the local community to attend an anti-bullying candlelight vigil outside the EVSC Headquarters, 951 Walnut Street on Thursday from 5pm – 5:45pm. The EVSC School Board has their organizational meeting at 5:30pm that same night and same location.

         The vigil is in response to EVSC’s communication with the press the past week and a half, where they have downplayed bullying as a problem at EVSC.

         The event is being organized with the following goals:

1)   To publicize that bullying IS a problem at EVSC, including the bullying of LGBT students;

2)   To ask the public to contact school board members, to instruct EVSC Superintendent Dr. David Smith to take action to address this issue;

3)   And to publicize that the Tri-State Alliance Youth Group is a safe place for LGBT middle school and high school students in our area (the group meets on Saturdays at 7pm at the TSA Offices, 501 John Street Suite 5 in Evansville)

Road Trip Continues On Wednesday At Missouri State

Aces and Bears to play at 7 p.m. at JQH Arena

On Wednesday, a quick 2-game road trip concludes when the University of Evansville men’s basketball team visits Missouri State for a 7 p.m. game at JQH Arena.

Last time out, a late rally saw Drake earn an 88-76 win over Evansville on Sunday at the Knapp Center.  The Aces led by a 72-70 score with four minutes remaining, but a furious Bulldog rally saw them finish the game on an 18-4 run to earn the win.  Jaylon Brown was the top scorer once again for the Aces, finishing with 23 points.  Dru Smith had his best game as a member of the Purple Aces, totaling 14 points; Duane Gibson matched Smith’s total of 14 while Ryan Taylor had 10.

After missing five games due to injury, freshman Dru Smith came back with a vengeance at Drake.  The Evansville native set career marks in points (14), field goal makes (5), attempts (11), 3-pointers (2) and assists (6).  Smith showed no rust from his missed time as he saw 28 minutes of action.  His return saw him notch six assists and no turnovers; his assist-to-turnover ratio for the season is 3:1.

Jaylon Brown continues to sit atop the Missouri Valley Conference in scoring (21.1 points per game), free throw percentage (.840) and minutes per game (36.1).  Brown added 23 more points to his tally on Sunday at Drake as he hit 8 out of 13 shots and all four free throw attempts.

For the third time this season, Duane Gibson reached double figures as he set his season high of 14 points at Drake.  Gibson knocked down 6 of his 9 attempts while recording 6 rebounds and 6 assists.  He has started all 15 games that he has appeared in and currently stands with an average of 5.4 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.  Despite missing two games, Gibson leads the Aces with a total of 59 assists.

A 75-67 loss to Southern Illinois on Saturday has Missouri State standing at an 11-6 overall mark and an even 2-2 record in MVC play.  Three Bears average double figures, led by Alize Johnson at 13.6 points per game; Johnson is the only MSU player to start all 17 games.  Johnson is a beast on the boards, checking in with a conference-leading 9.8 per game; that tally is 1.4 more than any other player in the league.Ronnie Rousseau III enters Wednesday’s tilt with 11.6 PPG while Dequon Miller stands with 11.1.  In the loss to SIU, Miller and Jarred Dixon notched a team-high 15 points apiece while Johnson finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

In recent months, there have been a string of break-ins to vending machines at various local business, including those in apartment laundry rooms and hotel snack stations (in hallways or external locations).  In these cases, entry into the machines was made or attempted by drilling into the coin receptacles, causing damage to the machine. In addition to lost revenue from the machines, the cost of repairing the damage can be extensive.

Eagles look to build on strong GLVC start

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball looks to build on its 4-0 start to Great Lakes Valley Conference play this week as the Screaming Eagles visit Truman State University Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in Kirksville, Missouri, and Quincy University Saturday at 1 p.m. in Quincy, Illinois.

Both games will be aired on WSWI 95.7 FM, while live stats, audio and GLVC Sports Network coverage can be accessed at GoUSIEagles.com. The GLVC Sports Network app also is available on Apple TV.

USI (12-2, 4-0 GLVC) is coming off an 84-79 win over Rockhurst University this past Saturday and a 57-39 win over William Jewell College last Thursday. It is USI’s first 4-0 start to league play since the 2009-10 campaign–USI has not started league play with five straight wins since 2006-07.

Junior guard/forward Kaydie Grooms (Marshall, Illinois) averaged 18.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game to lead the Eagles last week, while senior forwardHannah Wascher (Rantoul, Illinois) chipped in 11.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per contest.

Grooms, who has at least 20 points in five of USI’s last seven games, ranks fifth in the GLVC with a team-high 16.4 points per contest. Wascher is contributing 12.5 points and a team-best 8.1 rebounds per game, while junior forward Morgan Dahlstrom (Grayslake, Illinois) is pitching in 10.5 points and 7.9 rebounds per appearance.

Senior guard Tanner Marcum (New Albany, Indiana) is averaging 10.0 points and a GLVC-best 2.7 assist-to-turnover ratio after recording nine points, three rebounds, five assists, and six steals in USI’s win over Rockhurst.

Truman State (8-6, 3-2 GLVC), which has won three straight games, is led by senior center Cassidy Clark, the reigning GLVC Player of the Week. Clark is averaging 15.4 points and 8.0 rebounds per contest for the Bulldogs, who defeated the Eagles, 60-42, at the Physical Activities Center a year ago.

Quincy (4-11, 1-4 GLVC) is led by senior guard Nikia Edom’s 11.7 points per game. Junior forward Anika Webster is chipping in 11.5 points and a team-best 5.0 rebounds per game for the Lady Hawks, who lost seven of their first eight games to begin the year.

Following USI’s trip to Truman and Quincy, the Eagles return home for games against No. 4 Bellarmine (Monday), the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (January 19) and No. 19 Lewis University (January 21).

While USI had not reached double-digit blocks in a game since February 1, 2014, the last time USI had double-digit blocks in back-to-back games was during the 1995-96 season, which also was the last time USI recorded double-digit blocks twice in the same year. The Eagles followed a 15-block effort against Northern Kentucky January 4, 1996, with a 16-block effort against Bellarmine two days later. USI finished the year with three games with double-digit block totals.

 

  • Stein earns 300th win in 500th game.Head Coach Rick Steinearned his 300th career win in his 500th career game at the helm of the Screaming Eagles with USI’s 57-39 win over William Jewell. Stein, the all-time winningest coach in program history, has been a part of 460 victories during his 26 years at USI, including 159 in eight seasons as an assistant coach for the Eagles.

 

  • Busy slate.Starting with Truman State, the Eagles will play five games in a 10-day span. That includes bouts against nationally-ranked Bellarmine and Lewis.

 

  • Grooms continues to be headache for opposing defenses.Junior guard/forward Kaydie Groomshas reached the 20-point plateau in five of USI’s last seven games and a team-best seven times this season. She currently ranks fifth in the GLVC with 16.4 points per contest.

 

  • Marcum leads GLVC in assist-to-turnover ratio.Senior guard Tanner Marcumleads the GLVC with her 2.7 assist-to-turnover ratio. The next closest player to Marcum in the GLVC has a 1.8 assist-to-turnover ratio.

 

  • Harshbarger becomes scoring threat.Junior guard Randa Harshbargerbecame a scoring threat last week as she had back-to-back season highs against William Jewell and Rockhurst. After scoring eight points against the Cardinals, she racked up 11 points in USI’s win over Rockhurst.

 

  • USI in statistical rankings.USI begins the week leading the GLVC in 10 statistical rankings and is in the top six of 18 GLVC statistical categories. The Eagles also rank in the top 25 of 11 NCAA Division II statistical rankings.

  • Last year against Quincy.Quincy drained 14 three-pointers and took advantage of 21 USI turnovers en route to a 78-65 win over the Eagles. USI fought back from a late 22-point deficit, using a 10-0 fourth-quarter run to get within 11 points with less than four minutes to play; but back-to-back three-pointers by Nikia Edom quelled the Eagles’ surge.

 

  • Record book watch.Senior guard Tanner Marcumand junior guard/forward Kaydie Grooms are both looking to climb up the scoring record book at USI. Marcum is 19th all-time with 863 career points, while Grooms is 27th with 798 career points.

Eagles return to the road for GLVC play

The seventh-ranked University of Southern Indiana men’s basketball team hits the road for the first time in 2017 when it travels to Truman State University and Quincy University for a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference contests. The Screaming Eagles (14-0, 4-0 GLVC) visit Truman Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Kirksville, Missouri, and Quincy Saturday at 3:15 p.m. in Quincy, Illinois.

USI elevated seven spots this week in the NABC Division II Top 25 Poll, climbing to 10th in the official poll of the division. The Eagles rose to their highest level in the national ranking since December of 2012 when they were ranked seventh in the first D2SIDA Media Top 25 Poll of 2017.

USI Men’s Basketball vs. Week 10 Quick Notes:

  • USI moves up in national rankings.The University of Southern Indiana climbed into the top 10 in both national rankings this week, landing at 10th in the NABC/Division II Top 25 poll and seventh in the D2SIDA Media Top. The last time USI had a national rank of seven or better was December of the 2012-13 season.
  • Playing ranked teams.USI will be playing its first ranked teams of 2016-17 when it plays 24th (NABC)/10th (D2SIDA)-ranked Quincy University Saturday afternoon and ninth (NABC)/11th (D2SIDA)-ranked Bellarmine University Monday. The Eagles are 63-59 (.516) against ranked squads since 1992-93, 1-5 last season.
  • Eagles move to 14-0. USI resumed GLVC action last week, posting a pair of victories, defeating William Jewell College, 88-71, and Rockhurst University, 98-77, to go to 14-0 overall and 4-0 in the GLVC. The Eagles have reached 14-0 three times (2009-10: 23-0; 2000-01: 16-0; 2016-17: 14-0).
  • Leading USI last week.Senior guard Jeril Taylor led USI in the GLVC games with 22.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Alex Stein followed with 15.0 points per contest, shooting a 63.2% from the field, while junior guard Marcellous Washington and senior guard Cortez Macklin rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12.5 and 11.5 points per outing, respectively.
  • Eagles had the hot hand vs. Rockhurst.USI shot a season-best 64.2 percent from the field (34-53) versus Rockhurst on Saturday, 72.7 percent (16-22) in the second half. Senior guard Jeril Taylor was a blistering six-of-nine from beyond the arc, while junior guard Marcellous Washington was a lethal five-of-seven from downtown in the win.
  • 4-0 in the GLVC.The Eagles are 4-0 to start GLVC play for the 11th time since the creation of the GLVC and the fourth time in 10 years. USI’s best start in GLVC play was 14-0 in 2009-10.
  • Leading the GLVC.USI leads the GLVC in scoring (96.4 ppg); scoring margin (+27.2); free throw percentage (79.5 percent); rebounding defense (28.9 per game); and rebound margin (+12.6).
  • Holding the boards.The Eagles are holding the line on the glass, outrebounding opponents each of the last 10 games. USI has not been outrebounded this year, tying Ashland University and Kentucky Wesleyan College.
  • For the season.Senior guard Jeril Taylor  takes over the USI scoring lead with 19.2 points per game. Taylor is followed by sophomore guard Alex Stein, who is posting 18.2 point per contest; junior forward Julius Rajala, who is dropping in 12.7 points per outing, and senior guard Bobo Drummond, who is averaging 10.9 points per game off the bench.
  • USI vs. Truman State.USI has a 3-1 lead in the all-time series with Truman State University, posting all three of the wins at the Physical Activities Center. The Eagles’ only loss to the Bulldogs was in Kirksville, Missouri, in overtime, 71-68, in 2013-14. USI won last year’s match-up, 81-64, at the PAC and was led by senior guard Bobo Drummond with 16 points.
  • USI vs. Quincy.USI leads the all-time series, 29-10, and has a 9-5 advantage at Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Illinois. The Hawks defeated the Eagles last year at the PAC, 96-92, with senior guards Bobo Drummond and Jeril Taylor leading the way with 25 and 20 points, respectively, for USI.

 

 

EVSC to Utilize Virtual Option for Recent Snow Day

To ensure students can make up assignments as close to the missed day as possible, the EVSC will utilize the state’s Virtual Option as the method for recovering learning time lost for the snow day taken on January 5.

In the virtual option, students will be given their virtual lessons on Tuesday, January 17, and students will engage in the virtual lessons throughout the week with the support from teachers through virtual “office hours.” Assignments will then be due Tuesday, January 24. Students who do not complete the virtual lessons will be marked absent.

Students may do the work on their own time, with their device and Internet at home or other locations. Students also can make use of times the school building is open before and after school, and receive teacher support in those pre-determined times. Schools will communicate specific information regarding their extended hours with their families.

In addition, many of EVSC’s community partners have offered their facilities WIFI and devices for student use. Below is a partial list of EVSC’s community partners who have offered their facilities so that students can have access to computers and Internet.
