IS IT TRUE as game experiences and first class treatment is concerned, we are certain that the Division 2 players and fans were treated to a weekend to remember?…the Ford Center really is a very nice facility and the crew that runs it work hard and does a good job?

IS IT TRUE the only real problem with the Ford Center is that it costs so much more to operate than was estimated by the political spin doctors of 2008 (people who built it) because it draws less people to most sporting events than a high school gym does?

IS IT TRUE that the tag line displayed at the Ford Center for the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament read “The GLVC ranks among the nation’s best for academic success”?…that may very well be true because most of the students seem to have stayed home from the tournament to study?

IS IT TRUE that the Great Lakes Valley Conference basketball tournament is in the history books and the spin doctors are reaching deep into the public relations bag to claim great success from the sparsely attended event?…Evansville Sports Corp. Director Jason Sands called the weekend a success and even boasted that over 600 rooms were booked in Evansville due to the GLVC tournament?…that may be true if you include all three nights that teams were in town but several sessions didn’t even draw 600 attendees period?…that adding up out of town friends and family along with players coaches and cheerleaders it is possible that 600 room nights were rented?…that may sound like a lot but the reality is that is not even enough to fill up the new Doubletree Hotel if every person who came to town stayed there?

IS IT TRUE seeing the pictures of the inside of the Ford Center during the GVLC Tournament with so few people in it was really disheartening? …we are sure that Evansville Sports Corporation Director Jason Sands will spin this as if it was the NBA All Star game at Madison Square Garden? …”Spin Doctor” would have to be the middle name of anyone stuck with the job of making a crowd of 401 in an 11,000 seat arena sound like a big success?…Jason Sands may just have a future in politics with the way he’s able to spin things with the mainstream media folks?

IS IT TRUE that lack of big concession profits and after paying for the Ford Center crew, it is virtually impossible that the Ford Center made any money based on the information they released about they’re operating costs last month?

IS IT TRUE many people are now saying that the Ford Center would had been better off economically if the Mayor and his subordinates didn’t force the Evansville Icemen to leave town?

IS IT TRUE that well known Evansville businessman KC Chesser is starting a new bar and restaurant at Marina Pointe?  …this new bar and restaurant will be  called KC’s Marina Pointe?   ... this bar and restaurant will have two new upscale bars and a stage? …we wish KC Chesser only the best in his new business venture and know he will do well?

IS IT TRUE yesterday well known GOP party worker Jeremy Health submitted his name to the State GOP Secretary as well as the local GOP Secretary to enter his name to the run for Vanderburgh County Republican Chairman?  …we wish Jeremy the best of luck in his campaign?

Meet Chuck Knoll, New President of Local FOP

Being a policeman is a tough job. Not only are you putting your life on the line, you have to deal with negative press when an officer makes the headlines. The Fraternal of Police serves as a way to protect police officers when problems arise. The FOP has 325,000 members nationwide. Its president of the local chapter is Chuck Knoll.

Knoll has an extensive resume. He has a master’s degree in science from Indiana State. He’s been in law enforcement since 1994. Since becoming a police officer, Knoll has served as Executive Director of the National Association of Field Training Officers, Political Action Committee Chairman for the FOP, and day supervisor for the Evansville Housing Authority. He’s been president of the FOP since January.

Besides protecting officers, the FOP also serves as a pillar to the community. According to Knoll, two organizations the FOP are closely aligned with are the Easter Seals, an FOP national, state, and local charity, and the Police Athletic League. For the Police Athletic League, or PAL, the FOP donates $60,000 a year to various organizations throughout the year. This money goes to benefit underprivileged children in the area. The PAL Camp encompasses over 50 acres of land locally that the FOP designates as an area for children to get away from their everyday lives.

Still, the primary objective of the FOP is to protect its members. A recent example that occurred locally was when four officers were suspended for accusations they mistreated a suspect. A body camera worn by one of the officers supposedly contradicts a previously signed probable cause affidavit. Evansville Police Chief Billy Bolin recommended that three of the officers involved be terminated and one get demoted. The Evansville Police Merit Commission voted against the recommendations and all four officers were able to retain their jobs. During their suspensions, the FOP offered financial assistance and legal council as the legal fees for this process were well into the thousands of dollars. Knoll admitted to CCO that there were “hard feelings” within the FOP when Bolin (also a member of FOP) recommended the firings.

The Fraternal Order of Police has served the greater good not only for police officers but for the community as a whole. With Chuck Knoll as president, this will only continue.

Aces Play Final Round on Tuesday

 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Tyler Gray and Wil Pahud notched identical rounds of a 6-over 77 as the University of Evansville men’s golf team finished up the first round of the Benbow Invitational at Jacksonville Beach Golf Course.

Evansville’s duo ranks in a tie for 11th place with their rounds of 77.  They are each seven off the lead.  Noah Reese was third for the Purple Aces on Monday.  He sits tied for 16th place with his round of 79.

Matt Ladd and Jon Pick wrap up UE’s top five.  Each completed the first round with a 9-over 80 and are tied for 21st place.  Recording an 82 was Cameron Weyer.  That effort has him tied for 26th.  Next up for the Aces was Robert Waggoner, who carded an 84.

Austin Carmack and Zac Turi rounded out the squad in day one.  Carmack notched an 86 while Turi checked in with an 87.

As a team, the Aces are tied for 4th place with a 314.  Butler’s 297 has them on top with IUPUI seven strokes behind.  Albany State is in third with a 310.

Jackson Juerling of IUPUI leads the individuals and was the only player on the day to finish under par.  He registered a 1-under 70 and leads Butler’s Michael Denner by two strokes.  Joey Arcuri of Butler is third with a 74 while fellow Bulldog Patrick Allgeier is tied with two Albany State players for 4th with rounds of 75.

Tomorrow, the squads play the final round of the event.

The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana will begin the 2017 Taking Care of Business Tuesdays series with a social event tomorrow, Tuesday, March 7th, from 6 – 7 PM.
 
The March TCB event will also kick off our annual membership drive!
 
Join us for a discussion of membership benefits and events in 2017, and learn how the Arts Council is working in our community and with our members. We will provide complementary beer, wine, and soda. You do not need to be a member to participate in this event!
TCB Tuesday events provide free lectures and networking opportunities for artists members.  They will be held every first Tuesday of the month at the Arts Council’s Bower-Suhrheinrich Foundation Gallery, located at 318 Main Street in Downtown Evansville.

Jaylon Brown named to MVC All-Tournament Team

Brown is on team for second year in a row 

  1. ST LOUIS– Averaging 25.5 points per game in the University of Evansville men’s basketball team’s two games at Arch Madness, senior Jaylon Brown earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

Joining Brown on the team were Landry Shamet (WSU), Conner Frankamp (WSU), Paris Lee (ILS) and Alize Johnson (MSU).  Frankamp was named the Most Outstanding Player.

Brown started the tournament with 27 points in an 83-72 win over Indiana State.  He also grabbed eight rebounds and hit three triples in 39 minutes of work.  He was 9-of-19 from the field and added six free throws.

In a matchup against #1 seed Illinois State, Brown had another stellar game as the Aces rallied to get within four points of the Redbirds in the final minute.  He finished the game with 24 points while hitting all eight free throws and dishing out four assists.  He played just under 40 minutes.

He finished up his senior season leading the MVC in scoring (20.9 points per game) and minutes (36.8 minutes per game).  Brown finished up the season scoring 20 or more points in the final six contests while scoring double figures in all but one game in the 2016-17 season.

The honor for Brown marks the second year in a row that he earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.  D.J. Balentine was also honored twice, in both 2014 and 2016.  Prior to 2014, the only UE player to be named to the squad in the school’s tenure in the MVC was Marcus Wilson in 1999.

Aces play Oklahoma State on Tuesday

STILLWATER, Okla. – Looking to build on the momentum it gained from a walk-off win over Northwestern State, the University of Evansville softball team remains in the state of Oklahoma as they take on another Big 12 squad – Oklahoma State – on Tuesday.

UE will take on OSU in Stillwater at 5:30 p.m.  Live video and stat links are above.

Evansville wrapped up the Courtyard Marriott Tournament over the weekend, which was hosted by #9 Oklahoma.  The Aces faced off twice against the Sooners and scored seven of the eight runs allowed by the team.  On Friday, the Purple Aces took a 3-0 lead over the sooners on a pair of home runs before using the long ball to rally on Saturday.

Trailing Oklahoma by a score of 5-2 heading to the top of the seventh, the Aces made it interesting as Hayli Scott launched a 2-run home run with two outs as UE would eventually fall by a 5-4 score.  Things finally went UE’s way in Sunday’s finale against Northwestern State.  After the Demons made a furious rally to tie the game at 7-7 in the top of the seventh, junior Brittany Hay made quick work in the bottom of the frame, hitting a walk-off solo shot to post the win.

Scott batted .625 with 5 hits in 8 trips to the plate over the weekend. She had a home run and 5 RBI on the weekend and got it started with a pinch hit RBI on Friday versus WKU. Saturday against Northwestern State, she had another big pinch hit, knocking in 2 runs. The Saturday finale saw her come through late with another pinch hit – a 2-run homer as UE rallied against Oklahoma. Scott went 2-3 on Sunday versus NSU.

Hay hit .364 with two home runs at the OU tournament and had 4 hits in 11 at-bats.  She recorded a hit on Friday against the #9 Sooners before hitting a pinch hit homer on Saturday versus Northwestern State.  She finished off the weekend in style against NSU going 2-3 with a walk-off solo home run to lead the inning off and clinch the win.

In the circle, Samantha Fleming tossed 5.1 scoreless innings of relief for UE in the tournament. She gave up just one hit and struck out three batters.  On Saturday versus Northwestern State, she went four scoreless innings of relief, striking out two and allowing a hit.  Saturday’s finale against the Sooners saw her throw 2/3 of an inning, striking out one.  Fleming picked up the win on Sunday as she shut down NSU while grabbing two outs before UE walked it off.

The ladies are set to face Oklahoma State, who stands at 12-9.  OSU is coming off of a 4-1 weekend with wins over Abilene Christian, UNI and Tennessee Tech.  In the weekend finale, they dropped an 11-5 decision to the Panthers.  Vanessa Shippy is the offensive leader for OSU, batting .417 in their first 21 games.  Taylor Lunch checks in at .388 while Rylee Bayless is third on the squad at .352.
