USI Students Take Top Spot In Engineering Robotics Competition

A team of students representing the University of Southern Indiana took first place in a robotics competition hosted by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE) on April 1.

Participating teams were tasked with building a robot designed to compete in four distinct events themed around the “Star Wars” franchise. The USI team’s robot, “Aluminum Falcon,” beat out 41 other student teams, including teams from the University of Alabama – Tuscaloosa, University of Alabama – Birmingham and the Georgia Institute of Technology in the final round.

USI robot The Aluminum Falcon“The team made a near perfect run” in the final round, according to Dr. Ron Diersing, USI associate professor of engineering and one of two team faculty sponsors along with Dr. Art Chlebowski, assistant professor of engineering.

The competition was part of the IEEE’s SoutheastCon in Charlotte, North Carolina. The USI chapter of IEEE is part of the Engineering Department housed in USI’s Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education.

ST. VINCENT CELEBRATES SAFE KIDS DAY

St. Vincent Warrick Hospital and the Safe Kids Vanderburgh/Warrick County coalition are hosting Safe Kids Day. The event is free and open to the public on Wednesday May 3, from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at St. Vincent Warrick Hospital, 1116 Millis Avenue, in Boonville.

Families are encouraged to attend the event. There will be games and prizes, tours of emergency vehicles, a car temperature demonstration, Spot the Tot vehicle awareness, and car seat checks. Several agencies are participating: St. Vincent Warrick/WIC, Purdue Extension with Media Safety, Play for Kate with Robotic ATV safety, Warrick County Sheriff, Boonville Fire Department with the Smokehouse, Warrick County EMS, St. Mary’s Lifeflight, Anthem, and Kona Ice. Also, free bike helmet fittings and giveaways from Kohl’s Keep Kids Safe and a bicycle giveaway courtesy of Walmart.

Safe Kids Day is a day to celebrate kids, prevent injuries and save lives. Most preventable injuries – things like car crashes, drownings, fires and falls – are the leading cause of death to kids in the United States. Around the world a million children die each year from preventable injuries.

During the car seat checks, parents will learn about proper installation and use, as well as ensure their child is in the proper restraint for their size and weight. Children who use the car seat must be present. Appointments are always available by calling the car seat hotline at 812-485-6777.

If you haven’t filed your taxes yet, the Indiana Department of Revenue is offering free federal and state tax filing through Indiana freefile.

This program allows a person to access tax-filing software from trusted vendors, such as H&R Block and FreeTaxUSA. An Indiana resident would input their tax information through a question-and-answer style program.

Filing taxes online is a safe, secure and quick method that allows a tax return to be processed in 12 to 14 days, as opposed to a paper application, which can take up to 12 weeks.

Taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $64,000 or less may qualify for INfreefile. To learn more about the program and to view other requirements, visit freefile.dor.in.gov. The deadline to file taxes is Tuesday, April 18.

Passed Out Driver on US 41 had a BAC of .23%

Early this morning at approximately 1:50, Trooper Brock Buchanan located a 2012 Jeep that was parked at an angle on the shoulder at US 41 and SR 241. When Buchanan approached the vehicle he noticed it was still running and the female driver was passed out behind the steering wheel. When the female finally came to she attempted to drive off, but the vehicle was still in park. Buchanan was able to shut off the vehicle from the passenger side. The female attempted to get out through the driver’s door, but she feel back into the vehicle and sat down on the floor board. The driver was identified as Brittney Winternheimer, 27, of Evansville.  She was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes where it was determined she had a BAC of .23%. Winternheimer was arrested and taken to the Knox County Jail where she is currently being held on bond.
