IS IT TRUE the saga of raising tax rate on the citizens of Evansville and Vanderburgh County is one of those sad things that happens when property values do not increase to go along with the general cost of living?…expenses tend to rise in the Midwest along with the rest of the country with the odd exception of housing?…that is why a flat percentage tax fuels the coffers of government in areas where housing values increase without needing to raise the rates?…over a ten year period of a moderate inflation on goods and services of say 2.5% leads to an overall cost of living or business operation of roughly 30%?…when the municipal employees are granted annual increases based on cost of living statistics, and the assets used to run a government increase the sobering truth is that a $300 Million budget in 2007 would naturally turn into a $390 Million budget in 2017?.

IS IT TRUE in a situation where incomes and properties are not going up for the bulk of the taxpayers the City or County will not see their tax revenues increase over the same period of time?…the result is a need to raise taxes collected by the 30% increase in operating expenses just to keep doing the same things?…the City of Evansville and Vanderburgh County are both caught between a rock and a hard place due to the phenomena of rising prices in a stagnant economy?

IS IT TRUE in most situations where one is not getting any raises the correct action would be to cut back on consumption?…the City of Evansville in particular has not only kept up the spending, they have doubled down on fun and games under the irrational assumption that the fun and games would make the cash register ring?…the reality could not have been further from the truth?…with the combination of the Ford Center ($127 Million), the Doubletree Hotel ($21 Million), and the Indiana University Medical School ($57 Million), the trustees of the fair City of Evansville have borrowed over $205 Million that consume interest payments of over $10 Million per year?…not a one of these expensive baubles has come even close to paying for itself and the end is nowhere in sight?…all of this spending excludes bike paths, ball fields, penguin exhibits, and that shiny new home for a couple of jaguars all of which adds nearly another $50 Million to the party tab?…the future may well have been mortgaged to the fun and games obsession of the present?

IS IT TRUE the crime statistics for large American cities were just released and contrary to popular belief Chicago is not the murder capital of America?…that distinction goes to St. Louis where 59.6 people out of every 100,000 are murdered in any given year?…Chicago is a distant 8th place on the murder capital list?…some Indiana towns did make the list?…Indianapolis comes in at #21 with a murder rate of 17.6 per 100,000 while Fort Wayne debuts on the murder capital list at #24 at 16.5 out of 100,000?…little Evansville by the Ohio fares much better than any of them with a murder rate of 7.5 per 100,000?…the article went on to state that the driving force behind this crime spree in major US cities is the resurgence of heroin as the drug of choice for opiate users, many of whom are in the Midwest?…a couple of years ago Indiana had more prescriptions for opiates than it had people?…when the feds cracked down on the legal distribution of opiates, the heroin scourge that had been underground for many years came roaring back?…this is a tragedy that is just beginning to get traction so expect things in the mega cities to get worse before they get better?

IS IT TRUE a coffee shop in San Francisco now has a robot that will take your coffee order, prepare it for you, and put it into a cup for 40 cents less than Starbucks charges?…this innovation uses 30 year old robotic technology that was pioneered by the auto industry?…it was the excessive wage demands of people who think they deserve $15 per hour for pouring coffee in a cup that inspired this adaption of robotic technology?…someday soon the day of the barista will end due to yet another machine that does a better job for a better price than a human being?

IS IT TRUE that around 75 City of Evansville employees are being sued for unpaid medical bills?  …we hear that the City Controller had to find about $4 million dollars to pay towards past medical bills? …the City still owes many more million of dollars on unpaid medical bills?  …we wonder where the City Controller got the $4 million dollars to pay the past unpaid City employees medical bills?

IS IT TRUE we would like members of City Council to ask Finance Chairman Dan McGinn to give them a detailed recap concerning the real status of 2016 and 2017 unpaid employees medical bills?  …we also would like for him to explain where he going to get the money to make unpaid medical bills current?

Atlanta Artist Remembers Hometown Roots By Creating A Collage

In 1998, Jeremiah Claybrooks left Indiana to pursue a degree in Graphic Design from the Art Institute of Atlanta. After graduation, Jeremiah stayed in Georgia and got a job in graphic design. He moved on to start his own design business, http://c-4creative.com/ but never forgot his Evansville roots. Besides friends and family, the thing Jeremiah missed the most about the river city was the restaurants.

As an homage to all of his favorite hometown eateries, he created this collage of Evansville and some of its most famous food spots. This piece is a combination of photography, graphic design, and digital illustration. Jeremiah snapped the photos of his favorite joints on his trips back home. The spots he couldn’t get to were shot by local photographer and childhood friend, Nathaniel Cruse.

Communities, Coalition Celebrate The Razing Of The 100th Blighted House

The Economic Development Coalition of Southwest Indiana announced that its BEP region (Gibson, Posey and Warrick County) has surpassed razing 100 homes under the Blight Elimination Program (BEP), a program administered by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA).  Gibson, Posey and Warrick counties were awarded a combined total of $3,555,000 in competitive BEP funding rounds in late 2014 and early 2015 applied for by the Coalition.

Along with serving as the region’s umbrella economic development group, the Coalition is the region’s planning and community development organization as well.  In addition, Gibson County was awarded an additional $187,000 in blight elimination funding. IHDCA estimates that approximately 4,000 blighted and/or abandoned homes in Indiana will be eliminated through the Blight Elimination Program.

“The Blight Elimination Program is changing the landscape for our communities by removing vacant and dilapidated houses so that either green space or new construction can be completed,” said Debbie Bennett-Stearsman, Director of Special Projects for the Coalition.  After encouraging the counties to come together to apply for the program as one region, Bennett-Stearsman commented that this approach has helped streamline a very complicated process with transforming results.  “After 10 years of working regionally, the Coalition is proof that we can accomplish more together for the betterment of everyone.”

In Gibson County, 42 houses have been demolished with 23 homes in Posey County and 36 in Warrick County.  “The Coalition’s work is often behind the scenes with attracting business and talent to the region and helping communities build capacity,” said Gibson County Commissioner Steve Bottoms.  “But the results of this program and the hard work of the Coalition, demonstrates to our residents the level of positive impact working together can have through a wonderful program like BEP.”

The Arts Council Holds Its Second International Children’s Film Festival At The Koch Immersive Theater

The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana will host its second International Children’s Film Festival at the Evansville Museum on February 18th and 19th.  Four films, two each day, will be shown in the Koch Immersive Theater, and sampling of international food will be available. The first film starts at 10:30 a.m., and the second film at 12:30 p.m.  The event is free and open to the public.  All films will be presented in English.

ANOTHER CHANCE FOR ANIMALS, INC TO HOST 3rd ANNUAL “PAWS FOR A CAUSE BIG SHOW EXTRAVAGANZA”

Another Chance for Animals, Inc. will host “Paws for a Cause Big Show Extravaganza” on Saturday, March 11, 2017 beginning at 6:00PM to raise funds for the rescue.  Another Chance for Animals is dedicated to the rescue, care and placement of homeless animals in the area, working diligently to find forever homes and loving families for these animals.  This year’s event will be held at the Tropicana Evansville Executive Conference Center in Walnut A & B.  The fundraising event will feature live music, along with the first ever “Haute Dogs & Kitty Couture” pet fashion show featuring pet clothing by Coco & Tucker Pets and rescue pets as the glamorous models.  In addition, there will be a cocktail hour, both silent and live auctions and a delicious meal.

USI Softball Picked Second In GLVC

University of Southern Indiana Softball was picked to finish second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference according to the GLVC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, which was released Tuesday afternoon by the league office.

USI, which earned 202 points and a league-high six first-place votes, trailed the University of Indianapolis (210 points/five first-place votes) and were in front of the University of Missouri-St. Louis (185 points/two first-place votes).

Truman State University (180 points) and Bellarmine University (173 points/2 first-place votes) rounded out the coaches’ top five predictions in fourth and fifth, respectively.

McKendree University (157 points), Maryville University (142 points) and the University of Illinois Springfield (123 points) were picked sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively, while William Jewell College (109 points) and Rockhurst University (104 points) completed the top 10 picks.

The coaches’ predictions were rounded out by Drury University (78 points), Quincy University (73 points), Saint Joseph’s College (67 points), Lewis University (60 points), Missouri S&T (47 points) and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (18 points).

USI, which is receiving votes in the NFCA Top 25 Preseason Coaches’ poll, returns seven position starters and three pitchers off a team that went 35-21 overall and 21-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference a year ago.

Included in that list of returning players are five All-GLVC honorees, two All-Region performers and the reigning GLVC Player of the Year in senior All-American catcher Haley Hodges (Portage, Indiana).

Hodges, who was named first-team All-America by Herosports.com, the NFCA and the Division II Conference Commissioners Association, is coming off a historic 2016 season that saw her set single-season school records for home runs (22), RBIs (72), walks (45) and runs scored (58).

Surrounding Hodges in the lineup is a first-team All-GLVC outfielder in sophomore Olivia Clark-Kittleson (Carbondale, Illinois), a pair of second-team All-GLVC honorees in junior first baseman Marleah Fossett (Brownsburg, Indiana) and sophomore designated player/pitcher/outfielder Caitlyn Bradley (Forest, Indiana), and a third-team All-GLVC shortstop in senior Lexi Reese (Lebanon, Indiana).

Clark-Kittleson hit .351 with nine RBIs and 18 runs scored before injury cut her 2016 season short. Fossett hit .336 with 11 doubles, six home runs and 37 RBIs, while Bradley hit .300 with 12 doubles, a triple, two home runs and 23 RBIs in her first year of collegiate softball. Bradley also earned All-Midwest Region honors a year ago.

Reese had a huge year for USI as a junior when she hit .326 with 16 doubles, 10 home runs and 40 RBIs.

In the pitcher’s circle, the Eagles return Bradley and fellow sophomores Haylee Smith (Florence, Kentucky) and Courtney Atkisson(Bringhurst, Indiana). Smith led the Eagles with a 2.91 ERA and 11 complete games as a freshman, while Bradley went 6-3 with a 3.04 ERA.

Atkisson is coming off a strong fall campaign that saw the emergence of freshman pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt (Louisville, Kentucky). Leonhardt earned third-team All-State honors as a senior after posting a 2.40 ERA and 250 strikeouts during her senior season.

USI opens the year February 14 when it travels to Florence, Alabama, to take on defending NCAA Division II champion and preseason No. 1 University of North Alabama.

The Eagles also are slated to play preseason No. 6 Grand Valley State University March 6 at The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida, while the University of Indianapolis (No. 16) and the University of Missouri-St. Louis (No. 23) are the only GLVC teams to open the year in the NFCA Top 25 preseason poll.

Following their doubleheader with North Alabama, the Eagles host the Midwest Region Crossover February 24-26 at Deaconess Sports Park in Evansville. USI opens its home schedule March 15 with a doubleheader against Midwest Region foe Kentucky Wesleyan College.
