USI’s Leonhardt nabs GLVC weekly hon

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana freshman pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt (Louisville, Kentucky) has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week for her efforts in the Screaming Eagles’ 3-0 win over then No. 1-ranked and defending national champion University of North Alabama.

Making her collegiate debut, Leonhardt allowed just three hits, a walk and a hit batter in a complete-game shutout of the Lions. Leonhardt struck out six batters as USI snapped North Alabama’s six-game winning streak.

Leonhardt, a graduate of Fern Creek High School, is the first USI softball player to earn GLVC Pitcher of the Week honors since Brooke Harmening earned the award in February of 2015.

USI returns to action this weekend when it hosts the Midwest Region Crossover at Deaconess Sports Park in Evansville. The Eagles begin the weekend Friday when they take on Trevecca Nazarene University at 1 p.m. and Ferris State University at 3 p.m. USI also plays Northwood University and Ohio Dominican University Saturday, and Hillsdale College and Saginaw Valley State University Sunday.

The Midwest Region Tournament features 13 teams from the GLVC, Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and Great Midwest Athletic Conference. Games will be held on five different fields Friday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.; Saturday at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.; and Sunday at 10 a.m. and noon.

Cynthia Sturgis Landrum to Speak at UE Andiron Lecture in March

0

Cynthia Sturgis Landrum, CEO and director of the Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library, will be the speaker for the University of Evansville Andiron Lecture on March 1. The lecture will begin at 4:00 p.m., in Eykamp Hall, Room 252, in Ridgway University Center on UE’s campus. All of the Andiron lectures are free and open to the public.

Landrum’s topic will be “Toward a New Nostalgia for Public Libraries: Engaging, Inquiring, and Empowering.” During her talk, she will discuss the roots of library nostalgia. When and how was our nostalgia for libraries lost? Most importantly, how can we rediscover it for the greater good of our communities?

Landrum earned her bachelor’s degree in linguistics at Northwestern University, her master’s degree in library and information science at the University of Southern Mississippi, and is a doctoral candidate in managerial leadership for the information professions at Simmons College.

She is councilor-at-large on the Council of the American Library Association, past president of the Arizona Library Association and former board member of the Institute for Science Education and Technology. Her professional mission is to empower individuals to reach their highest potential so they can transform communities. As one example of this commitment, she tutors K-12 students from Chicago public schools, providing homework assistance with a primary focus on reading.

The Andiron Lecture series is sponsored by the William L. Ridgway College of Arts and Sciences and supported by a generous gift from Donald B. Korb. For more information, call 812-488-1070 or 812-488-2589.

Eagles fall to Aces 6-1

0

The University of Southern Indiana women’s tennis team was defeated by the University of Evansville Sunday evening, falling to the Aces 6-1 at the Evansville Tennis Center.

The Aces took the lone point in doubles, sweeping all three matches.

In singles, USI (3-2) tied the match at one with a win at number six by junior Haley Jones (Ft. Branch, Indiana), when she defeated Leah Helpingstine 6-0, 6-0.

While that was the only point USI would score, the Screaming Eagles battled throughout the rest of the match. Junior Kelsey Shipman (Olney, Illinois) took her match the full three sets before taking the 4-6, 6-3, 7-10 loss.
