Imagine a World Without Violence Art Contest and Event

In coordination with National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month, which takes place in February, the Albion Chapter of S.A.V.E. (Students Against Violence Everywhere) and Penny Lane are partnering to present the Imagine a World Without Violence art contest and event.

The art and poetry contest is for local youth ages 13-19 with the theme, “Imagine a World Without Violence”.  Submission deadline for art or poetry is on February 22nd.

On February 25th from 1:00-3:00 p.m., we will have the art event to celebrate the contest artwork, hear from guest speakers, host a poetry slam and this year we will also be revealing the name of our prevention mascot.

11.3% of high school students in Indiana reported experiencing dating violence. Teens who suffer dating abuse are at high risk of having long-term consequences like alcoholism, eating disorders, promiscuity, thoughts of suicide, and violent behavior.  Only 1/3 of the teens who were involved in an abusive relationship confided in someone about the violence.  Teen dating violence is a problem we can solve and community members can play an essential role.

Men’s basketball to make final road trip of regular season

Aces play at Wichita State on Tuesday

 

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The final road trip of the regular season is on tap as the University of Evansville men’s basketball team heads to Wichita State on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game.

 

Jaylon Brown registered a pair of 22-point outings as the Aces faced Drake and Bradley last week.  In a Tuesday evening win over Drake, Brown notched 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting while grabbing 8 rebounds.  He also dished out four assists and did not turn the ball over.  At Bradley, Brown had another 22-point outing with most of his work coming from the charity stripe as he hit 11 out of 12 free throws.

 

Fifteen more free throws by Brown over the last week saw him move even higher on the national list.  With 180 makes on the season, Brown ranks third in the country while his 209 attempts is 5th overall.  With 22 points at Bradley, he improved his career total to 1,269.  That tally pushed him past current head coach Marty Simmons, who finished his UE career with 1,265.  Brown now ranks 27th on the all-time UE list, just 18 away from the top 25 and 66 out of the top 20.

 

Christian Benzon had a nice effort on Saturday against the Braves.  Playing the most minutes of his career – 38 – Benzon hauled in a career-high 10 rebounds while scoring seven points.  His tally of 4.2 boards per game is tied for second on the squad.

 

Ryan Taylor finished with 16 points against Bradley, going 6-of-13 from the field.  A 3-pointer in the contest kept his streak alive as he has hit one from outside in each of the last 20 games.

 

Wichita State has won 10 games in a row and stands at 25-4 overall and 15-1 in Valley play.  Three Shockers average double figures, led by Markis McDuffie’s 11.8 points per game; McDuffie is also the leading rebounder for WSU, checking in with 5.9 per game.  Landry Shamet enters Tuesday’s game with 10.9 PPG while Darral Willis Jr. stands at 10.3.  On Saturday, the Shockers earned a 73-44 win over UNI at home as Shamet and Willis led the way with 14 points apiece while McDuffie notched 12.

 

Florey named MVC Pitcher of the Week

Sophomore threw a no-hitter on Sunday

 

  1. LOUIS – A 4-time Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week in 2016, University of Evansville sophomore Morgan Florey added to her award tally on Monday as she was named the MVC Pitcher of the Week.

 

“Morgan did a tremendous job in the circle for us in the opening weekend,” Aces head coach Mat Mundell said.  “She worked hard this fall to add to her game and we are excited to see it working.”

 

Florey had a stellar opening weekend of action for the Purple Aces as she tossed the first no-hitter for the program in 13 years against Creighton on Sunday.  Florey did not give up an earned run in 20 1/3 innings of work while striking out 25 batters and throwing three complete games.

 

In the opener against Mercer, Florey threw six innings while fanning 8 batters.  Florey was at it again on Saturday versus Creighton as she went the distance once again.  The only run given up was an unearned run in the 8th as the Bluejays earned a 1-0 win.  She rebounded on Sunday as she struck out a season-high 10 batters without issuing a walk in a no-hitter against the Bluejays.  She also did a nice job on the offensive side, batting .308 in five outings.

Ivy Tech English Composition Classes to Work with Soul Writers’ Guild Tuesday

Ivy Tech Community College English composition classes will be learning from the Evansville African American Museum’s Soul Writer’s Guild on Tuesday, Feb. 21, from 4-6 p.m., in the Koch Student Commons. The event is part of Ivy Tech’s diversity awareness activities and celebration of Black History Month.

 

The Guild is a cultural and history writing group that works under the auspices of the Evansville African American Museum, to be a place where African American experiences can be addressed, promoted and encouraged through the written and spoken word. Its purpose is to incubate creative thinking, critical writing, and to catalog and store the written legacy in the Museum’s literary/media conference center.

 

Also a part of the event will be performances by local students in the NAACP’s Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) – a yearlong achievement program designed to recruit, stimulate and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students.

 

Guest speaker for the event is City Council Member Connie Robinson-Blair, with a panel discussion to follow featuring community leaders Estella Moss, Alex Burton, and Robinson-Blair.

 

Distracted Driver Collides into rear of Tractor-Trailer on I-64

Last night at approximately 8:30, Indiana State Police and Warrick County Sheriff’s Department responded to a two vehicle crash on I-64 west of Lynnville that was caused by a distracted driver.

Preliminary investigation revealed Derek Schmitt, 21, of Jasper, was driving his 2015 Ford Fusion eastbound on I-64 near the 33.5 mile-marker when he looked away from the roadway to read a text message he had received.  Schmitt then collided into the rear of a tractor-trailer. Schmitt was thankfully wearing a seat belt and was not injured. His vehicle was totaled. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.  This crash is another example why it’s important not to drive distracted.

Man facing numerous charges after police respond to a call for shots fired

At 8:30pm on Monday, Evansville Police were called to the area of Jefferson and Bedford for a report of a fight. Officers were also told that at least one shot had been fired.
Three officers arrived and attempted to detain 28 year old Marquelle Smith, but he tried to flee in a car.
During the encounter, two EPD officers discharged their handguns. Smith continued to drive, but crashed into a yard barn a short distance away. He was taken into custody after struggling with officers. Smith was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, but it does not appear that he was injured during the police action shooting.
Smith is facing numerous charges that include attempted murder and resisting law enforcement.
The investigation is ongoing. Per EPD policy, the officers who fired their weapons will be placed on a 3 day administrative leave. Additional information will be released as the investigation allows.
