Mayor Terry Announces Launch of “My Summer Ride” to Expand Youth Access to Opportunity Through Free METS Bus Program

0

Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry today announced the launch of My Summer Ride, a new pilot initiative offering free METS bus service for youth across the city this summer. The program will run from June 2 through August 2, 2025, and is open to all youth aged 18 and under, as well as students over 18 who are still enrolled in high school.

As part of the City’s Safe Summer initiative, My Summer Ride was created to reduce transportation barriers that often prevent young people from accessing jobs, summer programs, libraries, parks, and other vital community resources.

“This program is about more than just transportation,” Mayor Stephanie Terry said. “My Summer Ride is about expanding opportunity. It’s about making sure every young person in our city can get to a job, a summer camp, or the library – regardless of whether they have a car or a ride. We’re supporting working families, fostering youth independence, and building the next generation of METS riders.”

To increase accessibility, the city will work with local youth-serving organizations to help distribute METS bus passes. Those passes will be available for pick-up at the CK Newsome Center, METS Station, and all public city pools. Students who may appear older than 18 should be prepared to show school ID or a report card when picking up their bus passes.

Participants in My Summer Ride can use METS fixed-route and METS Mobility services at no cost. The free rides are available for any purpose, not just for school-related activities. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

By offering this program, the City of Evansville is advancing several of Mayor Terry’s core priorities:

  • Youth Development, by helping young people access enrichment, education, and employment.
  • Public Safety, by ensuring safe, reliable transportation options.
  • Economic Development, by reducing transportation barriers for youth entering the workforce.

“My administration is committed to building a city where every child – no matter their zip code – has access to opportunity,” Mayor Terry added. “My Summer Ride is a step toward that vision.”

Full program details are available by calling METS at 812-435-6166 or asking any bus operator.

Walton, Ky. native joins Purple Aces

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Following a high school career that saw him finish as the all-time leading scorer at Walton-Verona High School, Aaron Gutman has signed on with the University of Evansville men’s basketball team.

“We are thrilled to welcome Aaron Gutman and his family to the UE family! As we continue building toward the future of our program, we’re focused on bringing in young, high-potential talent—and Aaron exemplifies exactly that,” UE head men’s basketball coach David Ragland exclaimed. “He is an extremely competitive and athletic player with impressive positional size.”

“Our priority remains clear: adding skilled players who can dribble, pass, and shoot. Aaron checks all those boxes. Even more importantly, he brings a relentless drive to improve and a work ethic that stands out,” Ragland continued. “We are excited for the impact Aaron will have on our program in the years to come.”

Gutman completed his high school career with 2,050 points to go along with 675 rebounds, and 143 3-point makes.  The scoring record at Walton-Verona had stood since 1958.  Following the season, Gutman was tabbed as the Co-KABC Player of the Year in the 8thRegion while earning 8th Region All-Region and 8th Region All-Tournament accolades.

He shined as a senior, averaging a team-high 23.3 points per game over the course of 34 contests.  Overall, Gutman was a 49.8% shooter from the field while adding a total of 67 triples in his final campaign.  He also paced the Bearcats with an average of 6.9 rebounds.   His efforts helped the team finish with a 21-13 record while playing in the 8thRegion semifinals.

Following the season, Gutman was selected to play in the Kentucky-Ohio All-Star game and finished with 13 points, two blocks, a steal, and assist.  He is set to play for the Kentucky All-Star team in the Kentucky-Indiana All-Star games, which will take place on June 6 and 7.

“I chose Evansville because of the culture created by the coaches,” Gutman said.  “The biggest thing for me was being around people who truly appreciate me.”

Iglesias has been included in The Hollywood Reporter’s “Top 40 Comedy Players” issue alongside comedy giants Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock and Lorne Michaels and was also honored with the cover of Variety’s comedy issue. The comedian has had the distinct honor of being one of the few to headline and sell-out Madison Square Garden in New York, Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles and The Sydney Opera House in Australia.

On TV, Iglesias is the star and executive producer of the Netflix original comedy series, Mr. Iglesias, which is currently streaming 3 seasons. Iglesias plays a good-natured public high school teacher who works at his alma mater. He takes on teaching gifted but misfit kids to not only save them from being “counseled out” by a bully bureaucrat Assistant Principal, but also to help them unlock their full potential. The show won best Primetime Comedy at The Imagen Awards, which recognizes positive portrayals of Latino actors/actresses in the entertainment industry.

In addition to his comedy series, Iglesias has released four stand-up comedy specials with Netflix. The first in 2016 with I’m Sorry For What I Said When I Was Hungry, which was filmed at the sold-out Allstate Arena in Chicago to 20,000 fans. The second, One Show Fits All, was filmed in front of a sold-out audience at the Toyota Center in Houston and debuted in January 2019. The third, Stadium Fluffy premiered in October 2022 and was taped in front of a crowd of 55,000 fans at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, where Iglesias made history as the first comedian to perform at and sellout the largest MLB stadium in the US.

In April of 2024, Iglesias reupped with Netflix for a new two-special deal. The first of the new specials, Gabriel Iglesias: Legend of Fluffy, taped at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Florida this summer and premiered worldwide January 7th, 2025, earning a top ten spot on Netflix’s global most watched list.

On March 11th, 2025, Iglesias cemented his place in Hollywood as he received his very on handprint ceremony at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre where he was recognized for his impressive achievements in his career. He joins a small group of artists and talent to receive this honor.

Last December, Iglesias co-starred Tim Allen in the second season of Disney+’s The Santa Clauses. Most recently he can be seen on NBC’s Lopez Vs. Lopez opposite George Lopez which premiered on NBC/Peacock.

Feature film credits include co-starring roles in Magic Mike, Magic Mike XXL and A Haunted House 2. Gabriel’s voice has been heard in many animated films including the recent Space Jam: A New Legacy as “Speedy Gonzales” streaming on MAX. In 2017, Iglesias voiced the role of “Head Clerk” in Pixar’s Academy Award nominated animated film Coco. He also voiced “Babo” in Ugly Dolls, “Rufus the Dog” in Sony’s Golden Globe nominated animated holiday film The Star and “Cuatro” in Fox 20th Century Film’s Academy Award nominated animated film Ferdinand. Gabriel is one of a handful of comedians with a theatrically released stand-up concert comedy film, The Fluffy Movie.

On the small screen, Fluffy’s Food Adventures, a non-scripted comedic docu-follow series completed a 3-season run on FUSE TV in 2017. Gabriel was a recurring guest star on the ABC sitcom Cristela, and also guest-starred in an episode of ABC’s hit comedy Modern Family. Comedy Central aired Iglesias’ hit series Stand-Up Revolution for 3 seasons. Comedy Central also aired Gabriel Iglesias: Aloha Fluffy in an unprecedented two-night comedy special to over 15 million viewers. The special was a follow-up to his previous DVD specials, Hot & Fluffy and I’m Not Fat…I’m Fluffy, which have sold millions of copies.

Gabriel Iglesias is the youngest of six children, raised by a single mother in Long Beach, CA. It was during his childhood that he developed a strong sense of humor to deal with the obstacles he faced. In 1997, he set out to hone his comedic skills, and performed stand-up anywhere he could find an audience, including biker bars and hole-in-the-wall joints. Gabriel’s stand-up comedy is a mixture of storytelling, parodies, characters, and sound effects that bring his personal experiences to life. His unique and animated comedy style has made him popular among fans of all ages.
