Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating an ATV accident that occurred yesterday afternoon in Warrick County.
On Saturday, February 26 at approximately 2:10 pm, Reuben Rodriquez (25) of Dugger Indiana was operating a Polaris Sportsman ATV at Interlake SRA. It was reported that Rodriguez lost control of his ATV while attempting to ride up a steep hill. Â The ATV came down on Rodriquez and continued to flip down the hill several times.
Rodriquez was Life Flighted to St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville where he was treated for internal injuries. Rodriguez was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Responding agencies included Warrick County Sheriff’s Department, Warrick County EMS and Fire, Lynnville Fire, Pigeon Township Fire, and St. Mary’s Life Flight.
 Celine is a female gray cat. She’s very affectionate! She and several other cats were pulled from Evansville Animal Care & Control. She’s estimated to be about a year old. They’ve spent their lives in laboratory cages being experimented on so that researchers can make medical breakthroughs. Their sacrifices have saved countless human lives. The very least we can do is give them a chance at a happy life outside the lab. Right now we have a chance to help give these dogs and cats the loving homes they deserve. The Maryland General Assembly is currently considering the Humane Adoption of Companion Animals Used in Research Act. If passed, this bill would require research institutions to work with animal rescue organizations to find homes for dogs and cats used in research once they are no longer needed for experiments. When students in the Pet and Animal Welfare Society at Johns Hopkins University found out about the bill, they started a Care2 petition urging their state legislators to pass it immediately. Will you sign their petition? Johns Hopkins University, one of the largest research institutions in Maryland, is lobbying against the bill because they think it will be used to put restrictions on types of animal research they perform. The university also claims that the bill is unnecessary because they have their own adoption program for lab animals. While it is commendable that the university makes an effort to find homes for their research animals, the adoptions are still done on an ad hoc basis. Even Johns Hopkins University’s own students don’t think this is enough. A formal statewide adoption policy would ensure that every dog and cat used in research, not just some of them, has a chance to find a loving forever home. Similar legislation has been passed in California, Connecticut, and Minnesota. As a result, dogs and cats regularly transition successfully from their sad existence in the lab to a thriving life in a happy home. Scientists are still able to do their research, but the animals are saved from being needlessly euthanized. The Humane Adoption of Companion Animals Used in Research Act is a compassionate and rational piece of legislation. The only reason it hasn’t already been passed is because Johns Hopkins University has such a powerful lobby. So sign this petition today urging the Maryland General Assembly to pass this bill that could save thousands of animals’ lives for years to come. If enough of us speak out, we may be able to drown out the university’s objections. |
 The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana will host a closing reception for its all black, white and grayscale art exhibit, Art Noir, on Friday, March 10, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, and Sauced will cater and provide a cash bar.
The semi-annual event includes 51 pieces of art from 42 local and area artists. Artist who entered the exhibit could submit work in any media and with any theme; the only parameter was to work with a colorless palate.
The exhibit has been up at the Bower-Suhrheinrich Foundation Gallery since February 17, and will run through March 10. Most items are for sale. Interested buyers can receive more information by calling (812) 422-2111.
UE travels to Cincinnati on March 3
CHICAGO – A battle that went down to the wire saw UIC earn a 4-3 win over the University of Evansville women’s tennis team on Sunday morning at Evergreen Racquet and Fitness.
“This was a close match and it came down to a third set at #5 singles to decide it,†Purple Aces coach Jayson Wiseman said. “I’m very proud of how hard we played all weekend, it’s just frustrating to give such a fantastic effort and all lose both matches on the weekend.”
Evansville picked up the opening point in doubles with Theodora Soldatou and Chicko Yamada earning a 6-3 win over Melika Leblanc and Rachel Le Comber at flight one. Diana Tkachenko and Nicoli Pereira were victorious at #3 doubles, defeating Georgia Sanders and Stefana Vasic, 6-4.
Tkachenko made the start at top singles and won the decision over Oana Manole, 6-1, 6-1. Daria Pentsova was victorious at #4 singles as she topped Bianca Zuzu, 6-4, 6-7 (0-3), 6-0. The biggest battle of the day was in flight five as Miranda Rodriguez got past Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
The Aces are back in action on March 3 at the University of Cincinnati.
