UE wraps up home schedule

 In the final home match of the season, the University of Evansville women’s tennis team earned a 7-0 win over Missouri State on Friday afternoon at Wesselman Park.

“This was a great team win and a great way to honor Andjela on Senior Day! We came out with great energy and effort and were able to sweep the doubles and really set a tone for the match,” Aces head coach Jayson Wiseman said.  “We did a great job of carrying that momentum over to singles and were able to secure the win with quick straight set victories at #1, 2, & 6 singles. We had a couple closer matches in the second set at #4 & 5 but Dasha & Andrea did an excellent job of closing those sets out.”

“Having Nicoli come back from down a set and down 3-0 to win her match at #3 really capped off the perfect day,” Wiseman added.

Evansville got off to a nice start in doubles, taking all three match-ups to earn the first point of the day.  From there, the squad continued to win in singles as Chieko Yamada and Diana Tkachenko took flights 1 and 2, respectively.

Nicoli Pereira battled from an early hole to take an exciting win at #3 singles in three sets.  Flights 4-6 featured wins by Daria Pentsova, Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga and Andjela Brguljan each in two sets as the Aces won by the final of 7-0 on Brguljan’s Senior Day.

The regular season winds down next weekend with a 1 p.m. match at Drake on Saturday, April 22 before the Purple Aces head to Cedar Falls to face UNI on Sunday at 10 a.m.

University of Southern Indiana Softball posted a pair of one-run decisions Friday afternoon to sweep a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside at the USI Softball Field.

The No. 8 Screaming Eagles (36-8, 15-5 GLVC) won the opener, 3-2, before grabbing a 2-1 win in the nightcap.

USI, which has won five straight games, returns to action Saturday at noon when it hosts Lewis University in a GLVC twin bill. The Flyers (22-19, 10-10 GLVC) lost twice to Bellarmine University Friday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky.

Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Caitlyn Bradley (Forest, Indiana) had a walk-off, RBI-single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Eagles a 3-2, come-from-behind win over Wisconsin-Parkside in the opener.

Bradley (5-2), who earned the win in the circle after allowing just two runs, one earned, flipped spots with junior designated player Alex Logan (Carleton, Michigan) in the batting order midway through the contest. She rewarded USI Head Coach Sue Kunkle’s decision with a 1-for-2 performance that included the game-winning single.

In the circle, Bradley shook off a shaky start to allow just four base runners throughout the final six innings of the contest. She had four strike outs and allowed just one walk and four hits in seven innings of work.

After spotting the Rangers (13-23, 8-10 GLVC) a two-run advantage in the opening frame, the Eagles rallied with a pair of runs in the last half of the third inning to tie the contest at 2-2.

The Eagles opened the third frame with three straight hits, including an RBI-single by junior first baseman Marleah Fossett (Brownsburg, Indiana). Senior catcher Haley Hodges (Portage, Indiana) followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game.

Hodges’ lead-off single in the seventh inning helped set up Bradley’s game-winner.

USI took advantage of an error in the bottom of the fourth inning to overcome a 1-0 deficit. Junior third baseman Mena Fulton (Bloomington, Indiana), who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, scored when freshman designated player Allison Schubert (Nicholasville, Kentucky) hit a fielder’s choice to UW-Parkside shortstop Allison Hausl.

Hausl turned to throw Fulton out at third base, but her throw sailed wide, allowing Fulton, who was hit twice in game two and three times on the afternoon, to score the tying run.

Two batters later, the Eagles took the lead as sophomore second baseman Claire Johnson (Pittsboro, Indiana) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Bradley, who was 3-for-3 at the plate in game two.

The one-run cushion was all freshman pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt (Louisville, Kentucky) needed to earn her league-high 21^st win of the year. Leonhardt (21-1) scattered six hits throughout seven innings of work, giving up just one unearned run, while striking out seven batters for her 18^th consecutive win.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Pitching was the name of the game on Friday as the University of Evansville and Missouri State softball squads split a doubleheader at Killian Stadium.

Missouri State (21-14, 9-5 MVC) earned the win in game one by a 2-1 final before the Purple Aces (17-23, 8-6 MVC) took the second contest by a final of 3-1.

“The ladies did their job on the road to get the split in day one,” UE head coach Mat Mundell said.  “They have given themselves a chance to win the series tomorrow.  We beat ourselves in game one, so that was our focus for the second game.”

In the bottom half of the first in game one, the Bears opened up the day’s scoring as the first run of the day came across on a wild pitch.  Evansville notched just two hits through the opening four frames before seeing two reach base in the top of the fifth.  MSU starter Kaitlin Beason was able to get out of the jam and keep the score at 1-0.

MSU added an insurance run in the sixth when Madison Jones scored on a Beason fielder’s choice.  Michal Luckett singled to start the seventh and would later score on a base knock from Chandra Parr.  Parr was thrown out at third on the play.  Following a single by Bailee Bostic, Tess Hupe had a 12-pitch at-bat, but lined out for the second out before MSU held on for the 2-1 triumph.

The Aces finished with a 6-5 edge in hits in the contest.  Starting pitcher Morgan Florey was in the circle for the duration, allowing two earned runs while striking out five.  Parr was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game.

After being held to one run in the opening match-up, UE got off to a fast start in the second game, plating three runs in the first inning.  Hayli Scott, Chandra Parr and Ashleigh Downing each had RBI’s in the frame.

Following the quick start by the offense, Ashleigh Downing took care of business in the circle.  The sophomore did not allow a hit until the bottom of the fifth inning.  Missouri State pushed their lone run of the game across the plate in that inning before Downing finished off the job to earn her third win of the season.  She tossed all seven innings and allowed the one run on four hits while fanning three batters.

UE outhit the Bears, 6-4, in the game.  Parr had two more hits in the contest and went 5-6 in the doubleheader.

A single game completes the series on Saturday at 11 a.m.
