USI’s Leonhardt earns third GLVC weekly honor

University of Southern Indiana freshman hurler Jennifer Leonhardt (Louisville, Kentucky) has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week in an announcement by the league office Monday.

 

Earning her third honor of the year, Leonhardt played a pivotal part in helping the No. 10 Screaming Eagles post a 5-1 record this past week, including a doubleheader sweep of No. 14 University of Indianapolis.

 

For the week, Leonhardt (20-1) went 4-0 with a 1.09 ERA and a .211 opponent batting average. She struck out 25 batters in 25.2 innings of work as she became the first 20-game winner since Brooke Harmening in 2015.

 

Leonhardt, who is 20-1 on the year with a 1.16 ERA, needs just five wins to tie USI Hall of Fame member Amy Stetler’s single-season record of 25, set in 1998. She also is just three shutouts shy of Stetler’s mark of 13, also set in 1998.

 

USI (34-8, 13-5 GLVC), which has had either a player or pitcher recognized with a GLVC weekly honor in each of the last five weeks, returns to action Friday at noon when it hosts the University of Wisconsin-Parkside at the USI Softball Field.

 

The Eagles, who have had a GLVC Pitcher or Player of the Week in seven of the last eight weeks, continue their 10-game homestand with a doubleheader against Lewis University Saturday at noon.

Presented by the Indiana Nonprofit Resource Network and Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library, the 9:30 am to 3:30 pm workshop offers vital information in the basics of finding available grants and completing grant proposals. Participants will learn how to increase nonprofit funding by finding the right grant opportunities and what funders are looking for in completed grant proposals.   Michael Austin to Deliver UE Crick Lecture on April 12

University of Evansville executive vice president for academic affairs Michael Austin will deliver the University’s final Crick Lecture of the 2016-17 school year. His topic will be “A Certain Convocation of Politic Worms: Literature and the Fear of Being Eaten.” The lecture will be April 12 at 4:00 p.m., in Room 100 in the Koch Center for Engineering and Science.

All Crick Lectures are free and open to the public and aimed at a general audience. The series is jointly sponsored by the Cognitive Science and Neuroscience programs.

In this presentation, Austin will draw on his book Useful Fictions: Evolution, Anxiety, and the Origins of Literature to try to answer the question “why does a species whose survival depends on the ability to collect and use accurate information have a universal predilection for fictional narratives?”

The answer takes us far back into humanity’s evolutionary past and deep into a cognitive structure that evolved to help organisms compete for resources in an environment full of dangerous predators and perilous situations.

Griffin named GLVC Pitcher of the Week

University of Southern Indiana junior right-hander Kyle Griffin (Morganfield, Kentucky) has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week after posting a 6-0 shutout of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday. Griffin threw a seven-inning complete game, scattering five hits and striking out seven Rangers.

After a slow start to 2017 that saw the junior right-hander post a 0-3 record and a 6.88 ERA, Griffin has become a force on the mound for the Eagles. USI has won his last four starts, while Griffin has evened his season mark at 3-3 and produced a 2.77 ERA in four games and 26 innings of work. Griffin also has averaged 7.3 strikeouts per game, recording a season-high 11 in his win over the University of Illinois Springfield in his previous start.

USI returns to action Tuesday when the Eagles travel to the University of Missouri-St. Louis for a 2:30 p.m. non-conference contest. The Eagles and Griffin return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field Friday and Saturday when they host McKendree University for a GLVC four-game set.

Eagles top Knights, prepare for UIndy

The 34th-ranked University of Southern Indiana men’s tennis team defeated Great Lakes Valley Conference rival Bellarmine Sunday afternoon, topping the Knights 8-1.

USI (16-7, 4-0 GLVC) took the first point of the match at number two doubles, where the duo of junior Samuel Kiladejo (London, England) and senior Aaron Barris (Marietta, Georgia) picked up an 8-4 win. Sophomores Andrew Dones (Georgetown, Indiana) and Ilia Karelin (Ekaterinburg, Russia) also had an 8-4 win at number three before the Knights (6-14, 1-3 GLVC) took number one, 8-6.

The Screaming Eagles had a clean sweep in singles play. Freshman Denis Davydov (Chorvatsky Grob, Slovakia) picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at number three for the first singles point. Kiladejo followed with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win after moving up to number two, and sophomore James Hardiman (Backwell Bristol, United Kingdom) had a 6-4, 6-4 win at number one.

Rounding out the scoring for USI was Barris with a 6-2, 6-3 win at number four, Karelin with a 6-4, 6-2 win at number five, and Dones with a 6-1, 6-1 win at number six.

Up next the Eagles host No. 16 Indianapolis on Friday at 2 p.m. at the USI Tennis Courts. The Greyhounds and Eagles are currently tied atop the GLVC East Division at 4-0.

Wrong-Way Driver Arrested for Driving While Impaired

Last night at approximately 9:30, Trooper Zackary Fulton was watching traffic while parked in the Schroeder Lane crossover on SR 66 when he observed a vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes. The wrong-way driver was traveling in the passing lane and nearly struck another vehicle before Trooper Fulton was able to stop the vehicle on SR 66 at Downen Road. The driver was identified as Gina Williams, 50, of Evansville. Fulton detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage and noticed her balance was poor when she exited her vehicle. Further investigation revealed she had a BAC of .19%. Williams was arrested and taken to the Posey County Jail where she is currently being held on bond.

IS IT TRUE that age and neglect have reportedly taken their toll on the Veterans Memorial Coliseum?…the classic old structure that has seen many a wrestling matches, basketball games and a series of rock and roll concerts in the 1970s and 1980s like our roads, sewers, and sidewalks is making news for the shoddy condition that it has been allowed to creep into?…this list of up and coming rock and roll bands that played at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum were KISS, Golden Earring, Thin Lizzy, The Eagles, Bachman Turner Overdrive, REO Speedwagon, and Dan Fogelberg?…that is just a few of the legends that graced the stage before they became international stars?…even in its poor condition we expect that the Veterans Memorial Coliseum has better financial results on an annualized basis than the Ford Center, the Old National Events Centre, and the Victory Theatre combined or individually?

IS IT TRUE the Veterans Memorial Coliseum and Mesker Amphitheater are the two venues that could always be counted on to bring emerging acts to Evansville and now from an entertainment perspective both are dormant?…they were intentionally vanquished to make room for the newer that hasn’t turned out to be better?…the City and the County have spent millions of dollars on temples to, sports, tourism, questionable zoo projects and other less than successful entertainment venues with taxpayer dollars? …the consequences of the infatuation with fun and games projects has resulted in a city of dreams unfulfilled that cannot afford to repair the basic things like sewers, water pipes, and roads?

 IS IT TRUE Its time we take a look both the Veterans Memorial Coliseum and Mesker Amphitheater and see how we make them once again a major part of our social, cultural and entertainment offerings?

IS IT TRUE the most effective members of the Evansville City Council Finance Committee were  John Friend -CPA and Curt John?

IS IT TRUE that Willy Taylor did an outstanding job when he served as a Vanderburgh County Councilmen? …James Raben, John Montrastelle, Angela Koehler Lindsey and Tom Shelter  Jr. are also doing a creditable job as members of the Vanderburgh County Council?

IS IT TRUE that the most effective Vanderburgh City Tax Assessors were Jim Angermier and Cheryl Musgrave?
