Air Quality Forecast From Region

Air quality forecasts for Evansville and Vanderburgh County are provided as a public service.  They are best estimates of predicted pollution levels that can be used as a guide so people can modify their activities and reduce their exposure to air quality conditions that may affect their health.  The forecasts are routinely made available at least a day in advance, and are posted by 10:30 AM Evansville time on Monday (for Tuesday through Thursday) and Thursday (for Friday through Monday).  When atmospheric conditions are uncertain or favor pollution levels above the National Ambient Air Quality Standards, forecasts are made on a daily basis.

Ozone forecasts are available from mid-April through September 30th.  Fine particulate (PM2.5) forecasts are available year round.

Air Quality Action Days

Ozone Alerts are issued by the Evansville EPA when maximum ozone readings averaged over a period of eight hours are forecasted to reach 71 parts per billion (ppb), or unhealthy for sensitive groups on the USEPA Air Quality Index scale.

Particulate Alerts are issued by the Evansville EPA when PM2.5 readings averaged over the period of midnight to midnight are forecasted to reach 35 micrograms per meter cubed (µg/m3).

Current conditions of OZONE and FINE PARTICULATE MATTER are available in near real-time on the Indiana Department of Environment Management’s website.

Gov. Holcomb Names Greg Wilson Executive Director of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission

Indianapolis native and minority outreach leader appointed to lead ICRC and Indiana’s five cultural commissions

 

INDIANAPOLIS – Governor Eric J. Holcomb today announced the appointment of Greg Wilson as Executive Director of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission (ICRC). In this role, Wilson will oversee the commission that enforces civil rights laws, investigates discrimination complaints and educates organizations, companies, landlords, associations and individuals on their rights and responsibilities under Indiana Civil Rights Laws. Wilson will also lead the team overseeing Indiana’s five cultural commissions including the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Indiana Holiday Commission, the Indiana Commission for Hispanic/Latino Affairs, the Indiana Commission for Women, the Indiana Commission for the Social Status of Black Males and the Indiana Native American/Indiana Affairs Commission.

 

“Greg has years of community-engagement experience, demonstrating both his leadership abilities and his commitment to Indiana’s minority groups,” Governor Holcomb said. “He will serve Hoosiers well as the head of Indiana’s Civil Rights Commission, and I look forward to continued partnership with Greg as we take Indiana to the next level.”

 

Wilson has a longstanding public service career, including community engagement for then Lt. Gov. Holcomb and most recently was Special Assistant to the Governor. His previous roles included developing and growing relationships with local, state and federal officials, sustaining and enhancing engagement efforts with key community leaders and deepening collaboration with state agency representatives.

 

Other career milestones include eight years as Director of the Department of Minority and Women’s Business Development under then Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard. In this role, Wilson was a senior advisor on economic issues and worked closely with veteran- and minority-owned small businesses throughout central Indiana. His department increased the amount of technical assistance, training, networking and outreach provided to minority businesses. He also served in a supply chain and logistics role for many years at United Water.

 

Wilson is an Indianapolis native and served for eight years in the U.S. Army. He is a partner and volunteer for the Indianapolis Ten Point Coalition and previously served as Board Chairman for Indiana Black Expo, Inc. Wilson currently serves as a board member for Visit Indy, the International Advisory Board and is Chairman of the Governor’s Commission on Minorities and Women’s Business Enterprises.

 

Indiana Minority Business Magazine in 2011 honored Wilson with a Champion of Diversity award, and in 2013 the National Association of Women Business Owners named Wilson and Indianapolis Choice Visionary award winner for his work with women-owned businesses.

The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana is now accepting nominations for the 2017 Mayor’s Arts Awards. These awards are given annually, and recognize individuals, groups, institutions, businesses, and projects that have made significant or innovative arts contributions to the arts community.
Nomination forms are now available by following this link, and will be accepted through Thursday, June 8th, by 4:00 pm.  Winners will be honored at the Annual Mayor’s Arts Awards on Thursday, August 17, 2017.

ISP First Sergeant Paul Hansard Receives Award

The American Association of Police Polygraphist recently held their annual conference in Houston, Texas. A highlight of the conference was the awards ceremony. Five year AAPP member, Indiana State Police First Sergeant Paul Hansard, was presented the Region II Richard O. Arthur Directors Award for his significant contribution in a 2016 Spencer, IN murder case.

In March, 2016 Indiana State Police polygraph examiner, F/Sgt. Paul Hansard was contacted to conduct a specific issue polygraph examination on a suspect to determine his truthfulness as to whether or not the suspect caused a female to go missing.  During the course of the investigation F/Sgt. Hansard determined the suspect was deceptive to the main issue. A second polygraph examination was utilized to determine the female’s location. The suspect displayed strong reactions to one particular area and during the interview concerning these deceptive results the suspect told F/Sgt. where the female’s body was located. The information gained from the polygraph examination and post-test interview led investigators to the female’s body.
The suspect was ultimately sentenced to a 60 year prison sentence for murder.

“The information gleaned from the suspect in our case by First Sergeant Hansard proved to be instrumental in securing a conviction,” stated Owen County Prosecutor Donald R. VanDerMoere II.   “I and the other citizens of Owen County owe Paul a huge debt of gratitude.  It gives me great pleasure to see such a diligent, hardworking and professional officer like Paul receive the recognition he deserves.”

The objectives of the AAPP is:
A. To encourage and develop cooperation among all American Law Enforcement Organizations in the application and utilization of accepted polygraph techniques.
B. To develop the highest standards of proficiency in the polygraph profession by fostering and encouraging scientific training and research through advanced study and progressive techniques.
C. To promote and maintain the highest standards of ethics, integrity, honor and conduct in the polygraph profession.
D. To provide an opportunity and forum for the exchange of information regarding polygraph experiences, studies and research.
E. To cooperate with other national, regional and state polygraph associations and other professional organizations in matters of mutual interest and of benefit to the polygraph profession.

First Sergeant Hansard is a ten year Indiana State Police veteran. He resides in Delaware County with his three children.

Evansville Rescue Mission To Hold 14th Annual Golf Scramble Today (5/8) To Benefit ERM’s Free Summer Camp Program at Camp Reveal
 
Camp Reveal has stood the test of time now for 90 years offering free Summer Camp for disadvantaged Tri-State children.  Similar to our organization’s other programs and services, the ERM’s Summer Camp program relies on the generosity of the Tri-State through private support and the annual ERM Golf Scramble represents the primary vehicle for raising needed funds for our Summer Camp program.

Here are some important details for twelfth annual Evansville Rescue Mission Golf Scramble: 

  • When: Monday, May 8
  • Where: Rolling Hills Country Club  (1066 Old Plank Road, Newburgh, IN 47630)
  • Start Time: Noon with complimentary lunch taking place between 10:30 and 11:45 p.m. 

Hundreds of Tri-State children will be given the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors and participate in a variety of fun, unique activities by attending the ERM’s Summer Camp program this June and July.  This is possible through the Tri-State’s support of the Evansville Rescue Mission’s annual golf scramble where $30,000 is projected to be raised through monetary support and in-kind donations.

Biology Students Provide Benches to United Caring Shelters

United Caring Shelters, 324 NW 6th St., Evansville

Biology students from Ivy Tech Community College have worked for several years to collect enough bottle caps to make benches for a variety of places, but especially for the United Caring Shelters, who had expressed a need, through Ivy Tech alumna Phyllis Ogburn. Today two benches will be delivered. Each bench takes 40,000 caps, and weighs about 400 pounds each. The benches are the culmination of work of about 75 students.

 

 

Softball Falls In Regular Season Finale

Aces set for MVC Championship

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State scored five runs in the first inning and held on from that point to take a 5-0 win over the University of Evansville softball team on Sunday afternoon.

The Purple Aces (20-32, 11-15 MVC) will be the #5 seed for this week’s Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in Normal, Ill.  Wichita State finishes the season at 31-19 and 16-9 in the league.

Danielle Cassidy made the start for UE, giving up the five runs over two innings of work.  Emily Lockhart had another nice outing in relief, tossing four scoreless innings while allowing three hits.

Brittany Hay, Chandra Parr and Susan Norris picked up the Aces’ three hits on the day.

Wichita did all of its scoring in the first as Madison Perrigan started it off with an RBI double.  Another big hit came off of McKenzie Adams’ bat as she plated two runs with a double as the Shockers took a 5-0 advantage.

That would be the scoring for the day as WSU took the 5-0 win.  They recorded eight hits on the day while UE finished with three.

In a nice gesture prior to the contest, the Shockers honored UE’s nine seniors and presented each with a rose as they took the field for their final regular-season contest.
