Air Quality Forecast
Air quality forecasts for Evansville and Vanderburgh County are provided as a public service. They are best estimates of predicted pollution levels that can be used as a guide so people can modify their activities and reduce their exposure to air quality conditions that may affect their health. The forecasts are routinely made available at least a day in advance, and are posted by 10:30 AM Evansville time on Monday (for Tuesday through Thursday) and Thursday (for Friday through Monday). When atmospheric conditions are uncertain or favor pollution levels above the National Ambient Air Quality Standards, forecasts are made on a daily basis.
Ozone forecasts are available from mid-April through September 30th. Fine particulate (PM2.5) forecasts are available year round.

Air Quality Action Days
Ozone Alerts are issued by the Evansville EPA when maximum ozone readings averaged over a period of eight hours are forecasted to reach 71 parts per billion (ppb), or unhealthy for sensitive groups on the USEPA Air Quality Index scale.
Particulate Alerts are issued by the Evansville EPA when PM2.5 readings averaged over the period of midnight to midnight are forecasted to reach 35 micrograms per meter cubed (µg/m3).
Current conditions of OZONE and FINE PARTICULATE MATTER are available in near real-time on the Indiana Department of Environment Management’s website.
National and regional maps of current conditions are available through USEPA AIRNow.
“Leading by Example†Topic of Ivy Tech/Banterra Annual Speaker Series at Ivy Tech Community College
The 2017 Schools of Business and Computing and Informatics Speaker Series at Ivy Tech Community College Southwest culminates April 19 with Guest Speaker Bo Drake, workforce alignment executive at Ivy Tech Southwest presenting the keynote address, “Leading by Example.†It is free and open to the public and will take place at 6 p.m. in Room 344 at Ivy Tech, 3501 N. First Avenue. The event, which features three different events, is sponsored by Banterra Bank.
Drake came to Southwest Indiana in 2013 to serve as executive director of Corporate College, (now Workforce Alignment) for Ivy Tech. Charged with serving employers throughout the region, he and his team have brought about significant growth. He has helped the college secure more than $2 million in grants and donations and has begun several programs to serve the workforce development needs in the community.
Previously, Drake was employed by Nationwide Insurance in Columbus, Ohio, where he served as a consultant in Mergers and Acquisitions. At Nationwide, he was responsible for training, coaching, and consulting with agency owners and sales managers in multiple states. He consulted on projects totaling more than $50 million and performed extensive financial analysis and forecasting. Drake also worked with the Ohio State Bar Association Insurance Agency in Columbus, Ohio, as the director of Insurance, serving the insurance needs of lawyers throughout the state.
He is a board member for the Southwest Indiana Chamber of Commerce, and serves as chair of the Education Committee. He has served as a volunteer for Junior Achievement and as a committee member for cMOE’s fundraiser, Ignite It!
Drake is an Ivy Tech alumnus with an Associate of Arts degree in business administration. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in speech communication from Northern Kentucky University and a Master’s in human services from Liberty University.
A public reception is planned prior to this presentation at 5 p.m. in the foyer area of Vectren Auditorium, on the first floor of Ivy Tech.

Southwest Indiana STEM at USI hosts Regional SeaPerch competition
The Southwest Indiana STEM (SwISTEM) Resource Center in the Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education at the University of Southern Indiana will host this year’s USI Regional SeaPerch Challenge – a district-wide one-day design competition from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 22 at the Mount Vernon Junior High School Natatorium.
SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program that trains teachers to teach their students how to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) in an in-school or out-of-school setting. Students build the ROV from a kit comprised of low-cost, easily accessible parts, following a curriculum that teaches basic engineering and science concepts with a marine engineering theme.
The challenge fosters an end goal, rewards sportsmanship, spirit and presentation skills, as well as mastery of the concepts. The goal is to engage and inspire young people by exposing them to exciting, hands-on, and mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, while at the same time fostering self-confidence and life skills.
The program is designed to take students out of the traditional classroom environment and give them an opportunity to learn about science and engineering in a way that is fun and exciting. It teaches teamwork and the scientific process while building teamwork and inspiring young minds. The main goal is to instill a love of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in students.
Up to 36 teams of third-through 12th-graders from 18 different organizations will compete in the USI Regional SeaPerch Challenge this year. Teams will check in from 8:30 a.m. to noon. An award ceremony will follow at 1 p.m. in the Natatorium. The teams that competed in the 2017 USI Regional SeaPerch Challenge will advance to the National SeaPerch Challenge May 19-20 at the Georgia Tech Aquatics Center, home of the water events held during the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Softball heads to Missouri State for 3-game set
Aces look for another series win in 2017
Beginning on Friday, the University of Evansville softball team looks to continue its 3-game Missouri Valley Conference win streak as the Purple Aces travel to Springfield, Mo. for a series at Missouri State.
A noon doubleheader begins the action on Friday before the finale on Saturday starts at 11 a.m. Live stats are available for all three contests while Friday’s twin bill will be carried live on The Valley on ESPN3.
In midweek action, the Aces dropped two games in a Tuesday doubleheader versus UT Martin. The Skyhawks earned a 7-2 win in game one before finishing the day with a 3-1 win. Morgan Florey went 3-5 in the DH with a home run. She also started game two, allowing an unearned run in four innings of work. Tess Hupe picked up two hits in 5 at-bats.
Here is what you need to know heading into the weekend:
– Morgan Lambert was named the MVC Player of the Week on Monday while Brittany Hay garnered Newcomer of the Week honors
– Chandra Parr hit the 31sh home run of her career at Drake on Sunday breaking Krista Price’s record, which was set in 2010
– Brittany Hay hit .750 in Des Moines while scoring 9 runs; her season tally of 31 runs scored moved her to 2nd in the MVC
– Morgan Florey has the top average on the squad, checking in at .342
– Ashlee Kawall has 15 steals on the season, tied for 3rd in the MVC; she is tied for 6th in program history
– In the weekend series at Drake, Evansville’s offense put up 31 runs in three games; it is the most the team has scored in a 3-game Valley series since posting 27 against Indiana State in 2003
– As a team, UE batted .402 against the Bulldogs while seven individuals hit .300 or above over the weekend; for the first time since 2002, the Aces have picked up two MVC series sweeps
– Morgan Florey’s 1.87 ERA is second in the Valley while her 141 strikeouts leads the league
Missouri State enters the weekend with a strong 20-13 mark while sitting at 8-4 in the conference. The Bears hit a strong .301 as a team, led by Erika Velasquez Zimmer’s .386 average. Hailee Gigneaux checks in just behind her at .381.
