Jaylon Brown Earns NABC All-District Honor
Brown Named To Second Team
 KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The honors keep rolling in for University of Evansville senior Jaylon Brown as he was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 16 Second Team.
These selections are voted on by members of the NABC in Division I.
Brown led the Missouri Valley Conference in scoring in 2016-17, posting 20.9 points per game. He was named to the MVC All-Conference Second Team while also garnering All-Tournament accolades in the 2017 version of Arch Madness.
Over the final stretch of his career, Brown was at his best. The Fishers, Ind. native recorded 20 or more points in his final six games for the Purple Aces. He also reached double figures in 32 out of 33 games as a senior.
He completed his career with 1,369 career points, 19th on the all-time program list. Brown was also named to the MVC Most Improved Team in consecutive seasons; that is the first time any player has done so.

About the National Association of Basketball Coaches
Located in Kansas City, MO, the NABC was founded in 1927 by Phog Allen, the legendary basketball coach at the University of Kansas. Allen, a student of James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, organized coaches into this collective group to serve as Guardians of the Game. The NABC currently has nearly 5,000 members consisting primarily of university and college men’s basketball coaches. All members of the NABC are expected to uphold the core values of being a Guardian of the Game by bringing attention to the positive aspects of the sport of basketball and the role coaches play in the academic and athletic lives of today’s student-athletes. Aces tennis to open MVC slate this weekend
Aces also travel to Western Kentucky
 Missouri Valley Conference play commences on Sunday for the University of Evansville women’s tennis team as they will first embark on a trip to Bowling Green, Ky. on Friday to take on Western Kentucky.
Evansville starts the action on Friday in Bowling Green against the Hilltoppers at noon before the Purple Aces take on Wichita State at Wesselman Park on Sunday at 10 a.m.
On Saturday, UE picked up victories over Wright State (4-1) before defeating IUPUI by a final score of 6-1.
Wright State started the opening match by taking the doubles point before UE stormed back to sweep singles play and earn the 4-1 win. Chieko Yamada, Diana Tkachenko, Theodora Soldatou and Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga each earned singles wins.
In the match versus the Jaguars, Evansville picked up the doubles point before taking five out of six singles tilts. Yamada, Tkachenko, Daria Pentsova, Pascual-Larrinaga and Andjela Brguljan were the singles winners for the Aces.
WKU comes into the weekend with a 9-4 mark and have won three straight. On a trip out west, the Hilltoppers defeated San Francisco and Pacific before toppling Butler by a 7-0 final in Nashville on Saturday. The Shockers come to Evansville with an even 7-7 record. They have won their last two matches, earning a 5-2 triumph over #43 SMU and a 4-3 victory against North Texas.
Hodges sets HR, RBI records as Eagles sweep Trojans
University of Southern Indiana Softball senior catcher Haley Hodges (Portage, Indiana) set program records for career RBIs and home runs Wednesday as the No. 14 Screaming Eagles swept a Midwest Region doubleheader from host Trevecca Nazarene University. USI won game one, 4-3, before taking the nightcap, 10-2, in six innings.
Hodges ended the day with 149 career RBIs and 39 career home runs to break a pair of ties with Rachel Bowling.
USI (21-5), which slipped four spots to No. 14 in the latest NFCA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll, returns to Great Lakes Valley play Saturday at noon when it travels to Springfield, Missouri, for a doubleheader against Drury University.

Hodges wasted little time in becoming the Eagles’ all-time RBI leader as her two-run single in the top of the first inning represented her 145th and 146th career RBIs, breaking a tie between her and Bowling. More importantly, the hit gave the Eagles an early 2-0 lead over the Trojans.
Trevecca Nazarene (10-15), however, rallied in the last half of the first inning with a two-run home run and an RBI-single to take a 3-2 lead.
Hodges’ RBI-single in the third inning tied the game at 3-3, while junior first baseman Marleah Fossett (Brownsburg, Indiana) broke the tie in the fifth frame with a solo home run.
Freshman pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt (Louisville, Kentucky) shook off the rough first inning to earn the victory. Leonhardt (11-1), who gave up five hits in the first inning, settled down to retire 19 of the final 20 batters she faced. She finished with eight strikeouts and no walks en route to her eighth straight decision.

Hodges’ two-run home run in the top of the first inning was her 39th career round-tripper, breaking a tie between her and Bowling, as USI took a 2-0 lead.
The Trojans had tallies in both the first and second innings, but a three-run double by senior shortstop Lexi Reese (Lebanon, Indiana) in the top of the second frame put USI up 5-1.
Back-to-back home runs by junior Alex Logan (Carleton, Michigan) and freshman Allison Schubert (Nicholasville, Kentucky) in the fifth inning gave the Eagles an 8-2 lead, while an error and an RBI-single by freshman Taylor Ricketts (Georgetown, Kentucky) in the sixth gave USI a 10-2 advantage. Logan’s home run was a two-run blast, while Schubert’s solo shot was her first career collegiate hit.
Sophomore lefty Courtney Atkisson (Bringhurst, Indiana) earned the win after giving up two runs, one earned, off nine hits in six innings of work. Atkisson (7-3) had a pair of strikeouts and just one walk en route to her seventh win of the year.

Eagles win on Kuester’s walk-off single
University of Southern Indiana junior first baseman Nathan Kuester (Rockport, Indiana) singled in sophomore shortstop Jacob Fleming (Evansville, Indiana) with the winning run in the ninth to defeat the University of Missouri-St. Louis, 6-5, Wednesday evening at the USI Baseball Field. USI, which has won four of the last five games, watched its record go to 7-9 overall, while UMSL goes to 6-9 in 2017.
With the score tied 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth, Fleming led off with a triple to right center. Following a walk to junior centerfielder Buddy Johnson (Shelbyville, Kentucky) and a one-out intentional walk to junior second baseman Joe Redburn (Newburgh, Indiana) to load the bases, Kuester sent a drive down the left field line to score Fleming with the game-winner.
The Screaming Eagles had the early lead, 4-0, after scoring four runs on two hits and three walks in the second inning. UMSL rallied with two runs the third and fourth frames before taking the lead, 5-4, with a tally in the fifth.
USI bounced back to tie the game, 5-5, in the seventh when Kuester doubled in freshman leftfielder Spenser Deom (Tell City, Indiana) to set the stage for the victory in the bottom of the ninth.
On the mound, senior right-hander Justin Watts (Bryan, Ohio) picked up his first win as an Eagle in relief. Watts (1-1), who followed five USI hurlers on a staff day for the Eagles, allowed a walk and struck out one in a scoreless top of the ninth.
USI hits the road to start the Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule this weekend when it visits Bellarmine University at Knights Field in Louisville, Kentucky. The scheduled dates and first pitch times for the four-game series is still to be determined due to the forecast of rain. IS IT TRUE that Pat Tuley has stepped up to save the Vanderburgh County Commissioners from themselves by taking his name out of consideration to become the next Director at Burdette Park?…Tuley has been a near permanent fixture in local politics and public education for as long as anyone can remember and the outrage over the firing of young educated millennial Jacob Murphy must have been too much for old Pat to bear?…removing his name from consideration was the right decision but it does not negate the fact that it looks like two Vanderburgh County Commissioners dealt the political patronage card from the bottom of the deck in their attempt to reward Tuley for political support of a campaign of one of the commissioners?…without publicly advertising this position in the local paper was like giving the taxpayers a big middle finger right in the face? Â …were sorry to report that in Vanderburgh County the practice of bypassing a merit based hire in favor of the time dishonorable tradition of the practice of political patronage hiring policies are the norm? Â …as long as political patronage is the ticket to a good job at the expense of qualifications, the mediocrity will continue and the town that moved up from last in the “Well Being” survey may just fall back to the bottom?
IS IT TRUE at yesterday’s County Council meeting Joe Kiefer made it known that members of the County Commission are considering doing a $500,000 office renovation project on the third floor of the Civic Center? Â …next week Mr. Kiefer and the President of the County Council will be meeting with a member of the County Commission to discuss combining both county offices into one business pod? Â …we can’t wait to see if County Commissioner Musgrave will be able to convince members of the County Council to spend around $500,000 on this questionable project?

IS IT TRUE it has been said that it is never too late to do the right thing?…Vanderburgh County stepped up and did the right thing more than 20 years after the rest of the civilized world did by passing anti-discrimination laws in favor of the LGBT community in the hiring process?…we congratulate the Vanderburgh County officials who made this move for finally getting on board with something that has been appropriate forever?…some of the “locals†who showed up to voice their opposition to this move were a curious combination of ignorance and brazen judgmentalism?…the lady with the cow mask is not one to put into a highlight film to attract millennials to the City of Evansville, but it was something to behold?
IS IT TRUE that after all of the hubbub over the drainage, noise, and traffic associated with the WalMart Supercenter planned for the North side at the intersection of Highway 57 and Boonville-New Harmony Road, WalMart has decided to cancel the project?…the folks who live out by the Hornet’s Nest will not have to worry about WalMart disrupting their domestic tranquility anymore?…this is not the only WalMart project to be cancelled or mothballed recently?…WalMart is wisely moving to an enhanced online distribution network so expect more cancellations and more big old empty stores in the near future?…the list of closures is now in double figures with WalMart, Target, and K-Mart leading the charge to abandon bricks and embrace clicks?
IS IT TRUE President Donald Trump is roughly 24 hours away from the first big congressional vote on his campaign promise to “Repeal and Replace†Obamacare?…as of the time of writing Trump appears to be 3 votes shy of what is needed to pass the repeal in the House of Representatives?…while what has been proposed does not even adopt some of the low hanging fruit of positive reforms for the embattled and struggling Obamacare legislation, it does look like a start?…zero Democrat votes are expected and the real obstruction is the “Freedom Caucus†which is a new name for the Tea Party?…we will know late Thursday night if this passes, but with or without the votes at least some action is being attempted to rescue the ACA which is on collision course with having no insurance carriers in several places in 2018?…if no corrective actions are taken, the United States will have a law on the books that fines people for failing to purchase something that isn’t even available at any price?…that my friends is the way Banana Republics do business?
