New Microchip Reader Helps Reunite Missing Dog from Illinois with Owner

New Microchip Reader Helps Reunite Missing Dog from Illinois with Owner
Thanks to newly acquired microchip readers, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office was able to reunite a missing Illinois pet with his family.

Last Saturday evening the Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Darmstadt Road near Highland School upon receiving report of a found dog. A concerned family had found a Great Pyrenees in their yard, but had no way to contact the owner as the dog was not wearing a collar.

Luckily for “Tuscy” (short for Tuscaloosa as we later learned), the Sheriff’s Office recently acquired microchip readers that allow sheriff’s deputies to scan micro-chipped pets and trace the identity of the owner. Not only was Tuscy chipped and his information current, we were able to contact the owner and advise him that we found his dog. When we informed Mr. Aaron O’Daniel that Tuscy was in Evansville, Indiana he was quite puzzled. Mr. O’Daniel explained that he last saw Tuscy around 3:00 PM at his house in Crossville, Illinois (which is nearly a hour away). Mr. O’Daniel had no idea how Tuscy made it to Evansville.

To verify ownership, Mr. O’Daniel described his dog to the deputy. Mr. O’Daniel explained that Tuscy had lived through the tornado that destroyed their home on February 28, 2017, but as a result Tuscy has a scar under his left eye. After confirming the description, Mr. O’Daniel was invited to Evansville to pick up his missing pet.

Deputies transported Tuscy to the Sheriff’s Command Post where he attended roll call and waited for his owner. Once Mr. O’Daniel arrived, Tuscy immediately recognized him. Mr. O’Daniel was very appreciative that Tuscy was found. Everyone wished Tuscy could tell us where he had been all day and how he made his way to Evansville.

Prior to receiving the pet scanners, a deputy who found a missing pet had few options other than checking with nearby neighbors or contacting Animal Control to have the pet placed at their facility. After 10 PM, an Animal Control Officer must be called in to respond to a request for assistance. Sergeant Kerri Blessinger explained, “The ability to quickly identify a pet’s owner saves us time and increases the chances of a pet being returned to his or her rightful owner.”

The pet microchips are tiny transponders that are implanted just under the pet’s skin. About the size of a grain of rice, the microchip is usually placed between the shoulder blades of the animal. Each microchip contains a registration number, which is displayed on the scanner’s LCD screen after being scanned. The Sheriff’s Office can then contact the chip company and obtain the owner information. Although there are several chip companies, the scanner is able to read the registration numbers regardless of the manufacturer.

Pets (canines and felines) that are adopted from area shelters and humane societies are often chipped prior to adoption. Vanderburgh County Animal Control, as well as most rescue centers, will chip your pet for a small fee. After adoption, pet owners can contact the respective chip company and have the pet owner information updated.

Sheriff Dave Wedding stated, “Pets are valuable family members, the loss of which can cause much grief and stress. As a member of the local Animal Cruelty Taskforce, the Sheriff’s Office is excited about this new technology which will increase our ability to keep Vanderburgh County’s pets safe.”

Pet owners must keep chip information current in order to ensure lost pets are successfully reunited. Thanks to the microchip, even after losing his collar Tuscy still made it home safe and sound.

USI’s Hodges named GLVC Player of Week

0

University of Southern Indiana senior catcher Haley Hodges (Portage, Indiana) has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week for softball in an announcement by the league office Monday afternoon.

Hodges hit .579 with a home run and eight RBIs to lead the No. 14 Screaming Eagles to a 5-1 record on the road this past week.

In USI’s doubleheader sweep of Midwest Region foe Trevecca Nazarene University, Hodges became USI’s all-time leader in home runs and RBIs as she finished the day with a solo shot and five runs batted in.

She returned to the plate Friday to go 3-for-3 with an RBI in USI’s game-one victory over Drury University. She was a combined 4-of-8 with a double and two RBIs in USI’s doubleheader split with Missouri University of Science & Technology Sunday.

For the week, Hodges posted a .789 slugging percentage and a .636 on-base percentage. She had a hit and at least one RBI in five of USI’s six games.

Hodges, who is earning GLVC Player of the Week for the third time in her career, joins sophomore second basemanClaire Johnson (Pittsboro, Indiana), senior shortstop Lexi Reese (Lebanon, Indiana) and freshman pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt (Louisville, Kentucky) in earning a GLVC weekly award this season. It also is the third straight week and fifth time in the last six weeks that a USI Softball player has been recognized as either a GLVC Player of Pitcher of the Week.

USI (24-6, 5-3 GLVC) returns to action Wednesday at 6 p.m. when it hosts former GLVC foe Kentucky Wesleyan College in a Midwest Region doubleheader at the USI Softball Field. The Eagles resume GLVC play Saturday with a noon doubleheader against McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois. They travel to Springfield, Illinois Sunday at noon to take on the University of Illinois Springfield in a GLVC doubleheader.

Tree of 40 Fruit Workshop To Be Held In New Harmony

A community  workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to Noon on Saturday, April 8. The first 25 participants to arrive will be given their own starter tree.

Sam Van Aken, the artist behind the Tree of 40 Fruit, will be working on the hybrid trees planted in the orchard by New Harmony’s Atheneum. This free workshop is a part of his biannual visits to ensure stability of the two trees.

Anyone who attends will be able to watch Van Aken graft onto the planted trees in New Harmony. Van Aken will lead the workshop and teach how to fuse branches onto an existing tree. The first 25 participants to arrive will be given a small tree that they can graft fruit branches on during the workshop. After the workshop, participants can take their tree home to plant it.

“It is our hope that community members will learn to graft and then take the trees back to their homes and plant them,” said Garry Holstein, director of the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art. “We will be working to reestablish the heirloom fruit varieties to the region.”

Hands on grafting is limited to those who are 18 and older, but all are welcome to see the process and meet the artist.

About the Tree of 40 Fruit:

The Tree of 40 Fruit is an ongoing series of hybridized fruit trees. Each unique tree grows over 40 different types of stone fruit including peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines, cherries and almonds. Every spring, the trees will blossom in multiple tones of pink, crimson and white and in summer, the trees will bear a multitude of fruit. Sculpted through the process of grafting, the process of fusing wood from an existing tree onto a branch of another tree.

This event kicks off a fun day of other activities in New Harmony. If you go:

  • The workshop begins at 10 a.m. at the orchard adjacent to the Atheneum.
  • The New Harmony Art Stroll is taking place from 4 to 7 p.m.

COA Remands Child Support Case

COA Remands Child Support Case

Olivia Covington for www.theindianalawyer.com

An Indiana trial court did not err in finding a Marion County father is voluntarily underemployed, yet it failed to consider evidence of the father’s prevailing job opportunities or earnings level, the Indiana Court of Appeals found Monday.

In Mark H. Miller, II v. Leigh Anne Miller, 49A02-1604-DR-817, Mark and Leigh Anne Miller had four children together, and Leigh Anne Miller served as the primary caregiver for her children until 2009. When Mark Miller lost his job in 2010, he became the primary caregiver while also enrolling as a part-time college student.

When Leigh Anne Miller filed for divorce in 2014, Mark Miller was still a part-time student who worked 15 hours a week and shared living expenses with his girlfriend. When the dissolution decree was issued in 2016, the Marion Superior Court found that Mark Miller had been voluntarily underemployed since losing his job and imputed his income at the rate of $600 per week based on his prior earning level and voluntary underemployment.

Thus, Mark Miller was ordered to pay $97 per week in child support. After his motion to correct was denied, Miller appealed, challenging the finding that he is voluntarily underemployed.

Judge Terry Crone, writing for a panel of the Indiana Court of Appeals, said in a Monday opinion the trial court’s finding as to Mark Miller’s underemployment was not clearly erroneous, noting at the time of the final hearing he was a part-time student, but that he is no longer the children’s primary caretaker. Thus, a “reasonable inference can be drawn that the time Father spent in his caretaking function is now available for other purposes, yet he is only working fifteen hours a week,” Crone said.

However, the appellate panel did remand the case to the trial court on the issue of Mark Miller’s imputed income. While the trial court properly considered Miller’s work history and occupational qualifications, Crone wrote that there was no evidence in the record regarding prevailing job opportunities for Miller or earning levels in his community.

The COA’s instructions included the discretion to “reevaluate and adjust other determinations regarding child support in the dissolution decree” after the hearing.
