VCRP Central Committee Officers Elected

On Saturday March 4, 2017, Vanderburgh County Republican Precinct and Vice Precinct committeemen gathered at the CK Newsome Center to elect county central committee officers. The local caucus was part of a state wide reorganization of the Republican Party. Local party Chairman Wayne Parke was re-elected to another 4 year term as head of the VCRP, defeating challenger Jeremy Heath. New additions to the the Vanderburgh County Central Committee are Dottie Thomas, who was unopposed for the position of Vice Chairman, and Hobart Scales who successfully challenged E. Lon Walters for the office of Secretary. Farley Smith was unopposed in his bid for re-election as party Treasurer. Congratulations to all. Thanks to Lon for his work as Secretary.

IS IT TRUE that the Great Lakes Valley Conference representatives all express satisfaction with the sparsely attended basketball tournament at Ford Center?…the “Chief Spin Doctor” of the Evansville Sports Corporation Jason Sands is also barking the satisfaction line?…the players and coaches all got to play in a $127 Million almost empty stadium and they are happy?…none of the above had a real financially accountable stake in the event?…the people who are responsible for the operating expenses of the Ford Center have been silent?…the Evansville Convention and Visitors Bureau, Venueworks, City Council and the Mayors office has been silent?…these organizations have a financial interest in having a bigger crowd at the Ford Center?…finally a couple of our readers told us that the GLVC tournament was subsidized by Deaconess Hospital?…they wonder how the customers of Deaconess will react to the sponsorship dollars when they get a bill from the hospital for $10,000 for a couple of hours of medical treatment?

IS IT TRUE that the new Vanderburgh County  Democratic Party Chairmen Scott Danks is going snake hunting?  …he isn’t going to Washington D C  to find them but here in Vanderburgh County?  …at last weeks party caucus he could have begun his snake hunting venture at that meeting?   …that meeting was attended by many Mayor Wiinnecke supporters and his political patronage buddies?  …it looks like Mr. Danks remarks were spot on when he said “that the head of political snakes is local not in D.C”.?   …could that be the reason why a group of alleged Democrats quickly and quietly left the meeting right after Mr. Danks remarks?  …it looks like the Democratic party of Vanderburgh County has a new Sheriff in town?…we are also pleased that Mr. Danks announced “that he will aggressively go after every seat in the city and the county”?

 IT TRUE a couple of our readers would like to know the answers to the following questions concerning the Evansville Sports Corporation? …does anyone know who hired the Evansville Sports Corporation Director? …does anyone know where his office is located? …does anyone know if the Evansville Sports Corporation has a Board of Directors? …If so, who are they? …does anyone know what the Directors yearly salary is and what funds pay for his salary and operating expenses?

IS IT TRUE that Bankrate Magazine surveyed a statistically significant number of Americans expecting a tax refund from the IRS and learned that only 6% of those expecting a refund will spend it on something special?…the other 94% indicated that they will either save the money of just spend it on everyday life?…these intentions are indicative of an economy that has not delivered decent wages while the unemployment rate was reduced by expanding near minimum wage jobs?…there are plenty of jobs out there, but they barely pay more than being on the dole?…most credible sources agree that there are still 20 million people out there who are under employed or want to work?…that leaves 75 million people over 16 who do not work and do not want to do so for any number of reasons?

IS IT TRUE the brick and mortar way of selling consumer goods is coming apart quicker than a Russian Space Station re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere?…the latest casualty is the HH Gregg chain of stores?…HH Gregg recently announced that they will be filing for bankruptcy and closing 88 stores?…we don’t know if the HH Gregg on Evansville’s Eastside will be on the chopping block, but we do know that prior to HH Gregg that space was a Circuit City that also wound up in bankruptcy and closing every location?…the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result?

IS IT TRUE that todays “Readers Poll”  question is: Do you agree with Evansville Sports Corporation Director Jason Sands that the 2017 Great Lakes Valley Conference basketball tournament was a success?

FOOTNOTE:  Its time for the Mayor, Evansville City Council and Venuworks be held accountable concerning the financial activities of the Ford Center.   Venue works needs to provide the Mayors office and the Evansville City Council an accurate and detailed profit and loss statement of the Ford Center for the first quarter of this year.  We are told that this report won’t be pretty.

A VIEW FROM THE OUTSIDE

Dear Friend, recently I was asked to share a thought or two on State issues from the perspective of a former state legislator. So join me, one who was once on the “INSIDE” and now has “A VIEW FROM THE OUTSIDE.” 

The hot news this past week has been the Vice-President Pence email scandal (soon to have a name, I am sure). While the IndyStar is raking the Vice-President over the coals, some people are getting a little nervous that this will seriously hurt his future bid for President; others think that is just fine.

What I think is that we are missing something very important, something far more reaching about this incident that we should talk more about.

Government has the responsibility to maintain a trustworthy relationship with its citizens; it is a priority.

The email incident, at minimum, should be a wake-up call. For our Legislature, it should be an opportunity. Here is one way to take on that opportunity.

The Legislature could create an independent commission that would review the ethics code and rules of the Legislature, communication and email issues, etc. on an ongoing basis, taking testimony and reporting annually to the Legislature, giving recommendations.

Better yet, the Executive and Judicial branches of government could be a part of the commission. There is no doubt that recommendations from this kind of inclusive commission would promote a comprehensive discussion of options for improvements.

I would like to see this independent commission of the three branches of government start by reviewing again the 2014 report from the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL). That report highlights what states are doing, what more states could do and even gives Indiana a “shout out” for our improved transparency measures.  Take a look here    INtestimonyFINAL10-14

Being accountable to citizens always warrants our best actions. An independent commission of the three branches is just one idea; I am sure there are others.

And, even though the email issue with Vice-President Pence is disturbing, it is also an opportunity for the Legislature to act.

Weather forecast forces second change for USI Baseball

Cold wintery weather forecast for this weekend has forced a second schedule change for the University of Southern Indiana baseball team this week. The USI-Drury University three-game series has been changed from a Friday-Sunday three-game series to a Thursday-Friday series at the USI Baseball Field.

The first pitch for the USI-Drury series opener is now set for 5 p.m. Thursday and 1 p.m. Friday for a doubleheader.

The Screaming Eagles, who had today’s game at the Perfect Game Spring Swing washed out, remain scheduled to play Young Harris College Wednesday at 3 p.m. (CST) on the final day of the Spring Swing.

Saylor ties for 16th for Eagles in Benbow Invitational USI RESULTS COMPLETE RESULTS

 The University of Southern Indiana men’s golf team brought home a fifth-place finish out of nine teams in the Don Benbow Invitational at Jacksonville Beach Golf Course played on Monday and Tuesday.

Senior Grant Saylor (Newburgh, Indiana) paced the Screaming Eagles, shooting a 16-over 158 (76-82) to tie for 16th. His score of 76 tied him for seventh after the first round. Freshman K.O. Taylor (Madisonville, Kentucky) was one stroke behind with a 17-over 159 (80-79) and tied for 19th.

Following right behind them were junior Preston Van Winkle (Santa Claus, Indiana) and freshman Trevis Bell (Madisonville, Kentucky). Van Winkle shot an 18-over 160 (79-81) to place tied for 21st. Bell was tied for 25th with a 19-over 161 (82-79).

As a team, USI shot a 67-over 635 (314-321) to place fifth of nine teams. Butler University grabbed first-place with a 30-over 598 (297-301). Individually, Jackson Juerling of IUPUI took top honors with a one-over 143 (70-73).

USI will hit the links again tomorrow as part of the Bulldog Florida Invitational at Windsor Parke Golf Club in Jacksonville, Florida. The event will conclude with the second round on Thursday.

SARAH VOELKEL, DPM JOINS ST. MARY’S WOUND CARE CLINIC

Sarah Voelkel, DPM has joined the St. Mary’s Medical Group and will practice at St. Mary’s Wound Care Clinic. She specializes in Podiatric Wound Care.

Most recently, Dr. Voelkel was a Physician at the Lexington VA Medical Center. Previously, she was an Associate Physician at Lexington Podiatry, PSC and Louisville Podiatry. She has held affiliations with Kentucky Surgery Center and St. Joseph East Hospital in Lexington and Norton Healthcare System in Louisville, Kentucky.

EVSC Virtual Academy Students Work on LEGO Robots

Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center, 1901 Lynch Rd. 
While much of the EVSC’s Virtual Academy curriculum is online, students enrolled in the program have the unique opportunity to come together to work in teams throughout the year. Recently, student teams have been meeting each Wednesday to work on a special project for the upcoming PEF Technology Showcase scheduled for later this week at Ivy Tech Community College. On Wednesday, from 9 to 10 a.m., student teams will meet one more time to finalize their work on their own LEGO Robots, including completing the building and programming of their robots.
As part of the project, Virtual Academy purchased LEGO robot kits and extension kits through a Public Education Foundation Grant. Each week, the Academy’s “School @ Home” students have met in teams to build their robots. In addition, the school created a cross curricular project where students record their team organization, process for building and the outcomes of their work.
