Recipients of USI Outstanding International Graduates and Peace Ambassador Award Named

International Programs and Services at the University of Southern Indiana has announced the recipients of the annual Peace Ambassador Award and Outstanding International Graduate awards during a reception on campus in April. The Peace Ambassador Award went to Loc Duong from Vietnam. The Peace Ambassador Award recognizes an outstanding international student whose actions and involvement in campus and community life have contributed to greater cross-cultural awareness and to increased understanding of the world, its peoples and its traditions.

Duong is a graduate student in the Masters of Public Administration program at USI. He enrolled in the program to better understand the differences between the public administration and political systems in Vietnam and the United States. During his college career at USI he has been active in the Student Government Association, participated in the Connect with Southern Indiana Leadership Program and spent two weeks in Vietnam assisting with student recruitment efforts.

The Outstanding International Graduate award recognizes an international student with outstanding leadership skills and academic achievement upon graduation from USI and, this year, both a graduate and undergraduate student was selected. The undergraduate recipient is a mathematics major from Zimbabwe, Florence Takaendesa.

Takaendesa has been active from the moment she set foot on the USI campus, co-founding KESHO, a student organization whose mission it is to empower and support women from developing countries. She was one of only 25 Moremi Initiative Leadership and Empowerment Development (MILEAD) Fellowes selected from a pool of over 3,000 applicants. This group “represents Africa’s most promising young women leaders, with the courage and commitment to lead and shape the future of Africa. She also has served as a facilitator for the USI Global Leadership Workshop and received a Global Ambassador Scholarship to attend USI.

The Outstanding International Graduate award for a graduate student went to Shadrach Mensah of Ghana. He enrolled in the Masters of Public Administration program with a long-term goal of starting a non-profit organization that caters for homeless and underprivileged children. During his time at USI he has helped develop global engagement initiatives which provide service-learning opportunities for USI students in the Evansville community. His volunteer recruitment efforts have led to the accruement of more than 700 hours of community service by USI students at homeless shelters, afterschool programs and other community organizations.

2017 Rotary/PEF/Love Foundation Classroom Enrichment Grants

0

Early May signals the time of year to announce the recipients of the 2017-2018 Rotary/PEF/Love Foundation Classroom Enrichment Grants. This year 26 grants totaling $25,186.00 have been awarded to more than 20 public schools in Vanderburgh County for projects that will take place in the 2017-2018 school year.  A complete list of the grants with brief descriptions is available at https://www.pefevansville.org/grants/grants.php .

These grants are awarded to original programs/projects created by teachers. They demonstrate long-term educational benefits as well as promote important values to students.

In May of 2016, 22 Rotary/PEF/Love Foundation grants were awarded for projects that have taken place during the 2016-2017 school year.  These funds have provided science supplies, robotic arms, learning with Lego’s, stability ball chairs, and more!

EVSC Virtual Academy teacher Jo Burns, a 2016 grant recipient, said, “her students have used this grant within the grade levels and across the grade levels  and collaborated to design, create, and build original machines and robots utilizing LEGO Mindstorm EV3 and components. The students investigated and determined how to differentiate to meet their individual needs.”

Taylor Gray from Glenwood Leadership Academy said her 2016 grant allowed her to “be able to provide students with ADHD and ADD stability balls and some new chairs to help them stay focused. It allows them to get their “wiggles out” without distracting the class. These different seats are considered active seating.”

PEF and the Rotary Club began a partnership in 1987 with the help of Rotarian and PEF Board member Calvin Dentino. In 2004, the Love Foundation joined the partnership and the trio has given more than $650,000 to nearly 900 classroom grants in the past 31 years.

The Washington Post Fact Checks Rhetoric on Preexisting Conditions

0

The Washington Post awarded four Pinocchios to a Democrat Senator’s unfounded claim that as a result of the American Health Care Act – the bill to repeal and replace Obamacare – millions of Americans with preexisting conditions “could be denied coverage.”

From The Washington Post:

Kamala D. Harris’s claim that 129 million people with preexisting conditions ‘could be denied coverage’

Update: We were so focused on fact-checking the “129 million” number that we neglected to consider the second part of her statement — that these people “could be denied coverage.” The problem is that the AHCA does not change the ACA’s guarantee of coverage. The rule for debating the amendment actually included a line to clarify any possible ambiguity —  that “nothing in this Act shall be construed as permitting health insurance issuers to limit access to health coverage for individuals with preexisting conditions.”

Hay, Lambert and Florey earn MVC Awards

UE opens MVC Championship on Thursday

NORMAL, Ill. – Brittany Hay, Morgan Lambert and Morgan Florey each earned Missouri Valley Conference awards at a banquet on the eve of the conference championship in Normal, Ill.

Hay was recognized as the league’s Newcomer of the Year while Florey and Lambert earned All-Conference Second Team honors.  Lambert was also named to the All-Defensive Team.  A junior out of Georgetown, Ill., Hay led the Aces with a .372 average in conference play while scoring 22 runs over that span.  She batted .306 for the season and was the conference Newcomer of the Week on April 10.

This is such a tremendous honor for Brittany! She has had such a great year at the plate for our team,” UE head coach Mat Mundell said.  “She is a dynamic weapon out of the lead-off spot.”

Morgan Lambert had another nice season at the plate and in the field.  The first baseman finished with an unbelievable .997 fielding percentage this season and improved her career tally to .989.  That is third on the all-time program list.  She finished second on the squad with eight home runs and 27 RBI.  “I could not be any happier for Morgan. She has been such a clutch player for us in conference play the last three years,” Mundell said.  “It has been awesome to see her grow as a player this is a nice recognition for her senior year.”

Another player who does it all for the Purple Aces has been Morgan Florey.  UE’s leader with 9 homers and 31 RBI was even better in the circle.  Her 188 strikeouts paced the MVC this season while her 1.95 ERA was third in the league.  She is the defending league Freshman of the Year.  “I am excited for Morgan to earn this recognition,” Mundell explained.  “She continues to improve in the circle. She is without a doubt one of the best pitchers in the MVC.”

Evansville’s award-winning trio and their teammates are set to open the league championship on Thursday at 11 a.m. versus Loyola.

Rep. Messer Hosts Congressional Leadership Academy for 6th District Students

0

Rep. Luke Messer (IN-06) hosted the 4th Annual Congressional Leadership Academy this week for high school students in the 6th District.

Civic-minded students from each high school in the 6th Congressional District were selected to participate in the half-day event held at the Commons in Columbus on Tuesday, May 9.

“The Leadership Academy is about inspiring future Hoosier leaders, connecting them with mentors and encouraging them to dream big,” Messer said. “We had another great group of student leaders participate this year, and I’m sure we’ll see more from them as they graduate and continue to make their mark.”

Students participated in a Leadership Speaker Series, where they got the chance to hear from Rep. Messer about government and civic leadership. Other speakers included Columbus Mayor Jim Lienhoop, Indiana National Guard Commander General Corey Carr, President of ClusterTruck Chris Baggott, and Director of International Government Relations at Cummins Inc. Shannon Kiely-Heider.

“Leadership is the most important ingredient for any successful endeavor,” Mayor Lienhoop said. “Columbus was pleased to help Congressman Messer focus on our next generation.”

Messer congratulated the following students for participating in this year’s Congressional Leadership Academy.

AG Hill joins 37 other attorneys general in requesting expansion of Medicaid fraud authority

0

Attorney General Curtis Hill today announced that he has joined attorneys general from 36 other states and Washington D.C. in urging the U.S. government to to allow the use of federal funds provided to the states’ Medicaid Fraud Control Units (MFCU) to investigate and prosecute a broader range of abuse and neglect cases.

General Hill and the 37 other attorneys general signed a letter addressed to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Secretary Tom Price requesting more authority at the state level. The attorneys general request the use of federal funds provided to their respective MFCU units to detect, investigate and prosecute abuse and neglect cases, including those that happen in non-institutional settings such as home healthcare. The letter calls the current restrictions at the state level outdated and requests greater flexibility for states’ use of Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU) assets.
