Snowflake is a 5-year-old male cat. He is FIV+, but he can still live just fine with other cats who don’t have FIV! The disease will not affect his overall health/quality of life. There is lots of good information online about FIV. Snowflake has been waiting on a home for far too long, probably because of his disease. Evansville City Ordinance sets fireworks guidelines
Consumer fireworks may be used within the corporate limits of the City of Evansville ONLY under the provisions of this section.
No person shall use, ignite or discharge consumer fireworks within the corporate limits of the City of Evansville except during the following times:
Between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on June 29th, June 30th, July 1st, July 2nd, July 3rd, July 5th, July 6th, July 7th, July 8th, and July 9th; and
Between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 midnight on July 4th
No person may use, ignite, or discharge consumer fireworks on any PUBLIC STREET or in any PUBLIC PARK or PUBLIC AREA within the corporate limits of the City of Evansville at any time.
No person may use, ignite, or discharge consumer fireworks in a manner which causes them to land upon property owned or occupied by another person.
Residents are not allowed to use, ig nite, or discharge consumer fireworks on any city property, INCLUDING THE AREA OF DRESS PLAZA DURING THE COMMUNITY FIREWORKS DISPLAY.
Residents are permitted to use, ignite, or discharge consumer fireworks on their own property or with the permission of the property owner. The fireworks must land on the property from which they were used, ignited, or discharged.

New Harmony Writer’s Residency to host two poetry reading events
The New Harmony Writer’s Residency will present two free, public poetry readings on Thursday, June 15 in New Harmony. Kaveh Akbar, whose poems have appeared in The New Yorker, PBS NewsHour and American Poetry Review and will release his debut collection, Calling a Wolf a Wolf, in Fall 2017, will hold a poetry reading at 1 p.m. at the Working Men’s Institute Museum and Library. Akbar will be joined by Paige Lewis, whose poems are forthcoming in American Poetry Review and Ploughshares, for a joint reading at 6:30 p.m. at Sara’s Harmony Way. Both events are made possible by the USI College of Liberal Arts, the Robert Lee Blaffer Foundation, the USI Foundation and the USI Society for Arts & Humanities.

Dr. Bill Thomas, touted as one of America’s “top 10 innovators†by the Wall Street Journal, will be the opening keynote speaker for the 10th annual Mid-America Institute on Aging and Wellness (MAIA), planned for August 10 and 11, 2017, at the University of Southern Indiana. This year’s MAIA, sponsored by USI and SWIRCA & More, also has a slate of new concurrent speakers and topics related to healthy aging, plus a few familiar faces that are returning by popular demand to celebrate our 10th annual conference. This conference appeals to health care and social service professionals, health care administrators, clinicians, older adults or retirees, family members providing care for a loved one, students and anyone who wants to learn tips for leading a healthier life.

Registration now open for 16th annual Norwegian Foot March
The 16th annual Norwegian Foot March will take participants 18.6 miles through the rolling hills of Evansville’s west side. Carrying a 25-pound rucksack, participants will begin and end at the University of Southern Indiana, working to make it back to the finish line in under four and a half hours. It’s an experience unlike any other, happening Saturday, November 4, 2017. Registration is currently open for the 16th annual Norwegian Foot March. ROTC cadets, Soldiers and veterans, as well as civilians, may register individually or as part of a four-member team. IS IT TRUE that the residents of Evansville’s Southside are taking the change of ownership of the Lincoln Estates complex very seriously?…with the ownership changing hands and the units being converted from Section 8 to market rate apartments, the word gentrification is being bantered about like a weapon?…what gentrification refers to is the mass change in the rental units in a certain area being converted from government subsidized housing to housing that the new residents actually pay for themselves?…gentrification is actually something that cities and counties hope for but it strikes fear into the hearts and minds of the people who are being displaced  …there is also fear that this gentrification effort may spread throughout the 4th and 2nd Ward of Evansville and convert much of the Section 8 housing stock to market rate in those area?
IS IT TRUEÂ that some people feel that gentrification to the tax collector and the American taxpayer is a profoundly positive thing?…they feel converting Section 8 housing to market rate allows for the property to be reassessed based on its revenue collection which makes government officials very happy?…they also feel getting rid of Section 8 housing also removes a tax burden from the taxpayers?
IS IT TRUE the only problem with gentrification is that it displaces people who have been getting subsidies and who may not have the ability to get by without a housing subsidy?…gentrification has been known to grow homelessness?…in some cases like East Palo Alto, CA gentrification has been an overwhelming success in uplifting the area?…in another one which is the liberal bastion of Santa Monica it lead to the city using it’s laws to round up he homeless and put them on Greyhound busses to Phoenix with a one way ticket, therefore exporting their problem to another state?…that is a pretty disgusting way for Santa Monica to conduct themselves?
IS IT TRUE that when the dust up over the conversion of the Lincoln Estates started, Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke caught the political compassion bug and was talking about allocating some taxpayer money (around $100,000) to help relocate the dislocated residents?…that idea must not have gotten much traction with City Council and may not have even been legal, so his tune has changed?…in the latest discussion Mayor Winnecke is distancing himself from the downtrodden folks with the following statement: “I understand the fear,†Mayor Lloyd Winnecke said. “I understand why people are concerned. We just have to keep the lines of discussion open. We have to keep communicating with people in these neighborhoods.â€
IS IT TRUE that talk (communication) always has and always will be CHEAP?…the statement above is not only shallow but patronizing and useless to a person facing a summer in the streets?…there is mechanism out there in Indiana to deal partially with being forced out of housing?…we wonder why the Township Trustee for the ward that Lincoln Estates is in has not come forward with some assistance?…that is why Township Trustees exist?…it will be interesting to see how this plays out but what is good for downtown Evansville is obviously not so good for people who have been living on a housing subsidy for many years?
IS IT TRUE we wonder when this property was in bankruptcy why didn’t The Office Of The Special Inspector General For The Troubled Asset Relief Program (Investigations Division) out of Washington, D C pay a visit to Evansville to look at the Lincoln Estates issue?
IS IT TRUE we also wonder why the three (3) At-Large City Council members, Dr. Dan Adams, Michelle Mercer and Jonathan Weaver have been so quiet about the Lincoln Estates issue? …if our memory serves us correctly didn’t Adams, Weaver and Mercer promise the fine people of the 4th Ward that they will look after their interests if elected to City Council?
IS IT TRUE we commend Vanderburgh County Commissioner Ben Shoulder for nominating Rev. Adrain Brooks to serve on the Airport Commission? Â …Rev. Brooks is an outstanding member of this community and shall us well as a member of this important board? Â …that Commissioner Shoulders pulled a political hat trick concerning this appointment by getting a 3-0 vote for Rev. Brooks?
