Gov. Holcomb on EPA Administrator Pruitt’s Visit to East Chicago

0

Gov. Eric Holcomb joined federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Scott Pruitt, U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly, U.S. Senator Todd Young, U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, East Chicago Mayor Anthony Copeland, state Senator Lonnie Randolph, state Rep. Earl Harris, Jr., East Chicago officials and community leaders at the East Chicago Superfund Site.

Gov. Holcomb offered the following statement regarding the day’s visit:

The impacts of lead contamination in East Chicago have made clear some of the most pressing systemic challenges these families face. The situation demands an unprecedented level of cooperation among state, local and federal stakeholders. That is pretty easy to articulate, but it’s difficult to achieve.

Today’s visit by EPA Administrator Pruitt is one more example. I think it speaks volumes that he chose East Chicago to be his first Superfund site visit since taking on this new role. From our very first meeting, Pruitt and his team have demonstrated their commitment to being a partner with us, and I am profusely grateful.

This all means the collaboration is working. It means we are here, and we’re staying. We’re not going to leave until we get the job done, and then we’ll be here a little longer—because this is about the residents.

IS IT TRUE APRIL 20, 2017

12

IS IT TRUE that a couple of old Republican buddies have become adversaries in Vanderburgh County in the last week?…longtime Republican Party Chairman Wayne Parke has publicly called out County Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave for her role in the shenanigans over at Burdette Park?…Parke went so far as to call for Musgrave to resign her role as County Commissioner for all of this hubbub?…Musgrave scoffed and laughed at the proposition of her doing as Mr. Parke commanded?…Musgrave has always been a thorn in the side of the old boy network and has at times been in the crosshairs of Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and even was prone to infuriating former Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfwl when he was busy spending money we didn’t have to do projects we didn’t need?…sometimes this is what happens when one works for the public good and not for party bosses?…the nonsense at Burdette Park was a wrong move on Musgrave’s part but it is one of a few mistakes that she has made in her public service?…we are told when the Party bosses call for one to be ousted, it usually means they may be doing something right?  Its time for our County officials to move beyond the Burdette Park hubbub and start focusing on economic development and quality of life issues?

.IS IT TRUE that the NCAA Division 2 basketball Elite Eight is coming back to Evansville for a four year run starting in 2019?…the official host will be the University of Southern Indiana and the venue selected is the Ford Center?…the criteria for choosing the location must not be based on past attendance because Ford Center’s record for drawing crowds is not very good for national sporting events?…this years “BIG TIME” conference championships drew less than 1,000 people per session and there is no reason to believe that the Division 2 National Elite Eight will do any better?…the CCO does welcome the tournament to town but respectfully suggests that the PAC Center on the USI campus would be better venues?…a smaller gym would make a better place for a sparsely attended group of games for the players?…we will all be treated to a nationally televised championship game held in what will look like a completely empty hockey rink that seats 10,000 telling the world about the limited interest that Evansvillians really have in such games?

IS IT TRUE our most recent  “Readers Poll” asked the question “Do you feel that the City Council Finance Chairman Dan McGinn needs to sit the record straight concerning the true financial status of the City’ generated the following responses”?  …that 314 people voted on this non-scientific but trendy poll?  …a whooping 314 people voted “yes”?  …a mere 3 people voted “No” and 9  people had “No Idea”?  …if we were City Council Finance Chairman Dan McGinn we would  be extremely concerned by this vote?  … Mr. McGinn would be politically wise if he would give an accurate report on the current financial condition of the city in the upcoming budget hearings?

IS IT TRUE that the Union contract negotiations between the City of Evansville and members of the Police and Fire are at an impasse?  …we wonder how the City can negotiate with the Police and Fire Unions in good faith when they don’t have the money to contribute to any reasonable salary increases in their new contact?

IS IT TRUE that District 49 State Senate candidate Brady Hall announced a change for the Hoosiers for Hall campaign kick-off, event and invites members of the press and supporters to Lamasco Bar & Grill on 1331 W. Franklin Street, Evansville, Indiana 47710 on Thursday April 27th at 6pm?  …Hall claims that “Due to the enormous amount of support we’ve received since the media release, we decided we would need room to accommodate as many supporters as possible.” Hall said of the venue change?  …Hall also added, “Besides, the media and everyone else should be focused on Guns and Hoses, we don’t want our campaign to be a distraction from our great firefighters and police officers.”  …we think Mr. Hall made a wise decision to change the time, place and date for his formal announcement?

FOOTNOTE: We just posted ‘Readers Poll” question:: Do you feel that County Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave should heed GOP Chairman Wayne Parke call for her to resign?

Senior makes inspired return from injury

In her first trip to the plate following an injury in March, senior Susan Norris hit a walk-off single as the University of Evansville earned a doubleheader split against Southern Illinois on Wednesday at Cooper Stadium.

Norris came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh of game one in a scoreless game and came through with the hit to give the Purple Aces (19-24, 10-7 MVC) a 1-0 win.  In game two, she hit a 2-run home run as UE fell to Southern Illinois (23-21, 10-7 MVC) by a 10-7 score.

“We played a great game in the first one, Morgan threw an awesome game and Susan came in and got a huge hit,” Aces head coach Mat Mundell said.  “She has been out and we did not know if we would even get her back.  The second game got away from us a little bit, but I am proud of how we fought back.  Danielle Cassidy pitched extremely well, it was her best outing so far.”

Game one was a defensive battle as the game remained scoreless until the final at-bat.  Evansville starter Morgan Florey threw a 2-hit shutout in the game while striking out 12 batters en route to her 13th win of the season.  Brianna Jones of SIU was just as impressive, giving up just one run in six innings of work.

The game changer came in the bottom of the seventh as Bailee Bostic led off with a double to right center field and was pinch run for by Courtney Land.  Next up was Ashlee Kawall, who reached via a bunt single that moved Land to third with nobody out.  Susan Norris then pinch hit, her first trip to the plate since suffering an injury in March.  In a special moment, she singled to left for the only run of the game while clinching an Aces win.

Southern Illinois plated three runs in each of the first two innings of game two as they opened up a 10-2 lead after the top of the fourth in the second tilt.  The two UE runs came off the bat of Norris as she hit a home run to deep left field to get the Aces on the board in the second.

Two innings later, UE made it interesting, scoring four times.  Chandra Parr hit a home run while Brittany Hay was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Michal Luckett notched a 2-RBI hit, but the deficit was too much as Evansville dropped the 10-7 decision.

UE is back at Cooper Stadium on Saturday for a doubleheader against Indiana State.  Game one is set to begin at 12 p.m.

COA: Signatures Do Not Have To Take A Specific Form

Marilyn Odendahl for www.theindianalawyer.com

A man who drove too fast and was given an electronic speeding ticket failed to convince the Indiana Court of Appeals that all signatures are not the same.

Philip Davis filed a pro se appeal of a judgment against him for the civil infraction of speeding. In part, he argued the trial court should have granted his motion to dismiss because the summons and complaint did not bear the sergeant’s signature.

The ticket issued to Davis as well as the summons and complaint had the police officer’s name, badge number and policy agency electronically printed on them. Allen Superior Court found that a non-electronic signature was not required by state statute.

On appeal, Davis did not raise any issues with an electronic signature but he asserted it should be formatted in a manner that is different from the rest of the text. He contended, the “mere printing of a name, in the same type as the rest of the complaint and summons, is not a signature.”

The Court of Appeals found no reversible error in Philip R. Davis v. State of Indiana, 02A05-1609-IF-2026.

The unanimous panel noted while Indiana Code 9-30-3-6 holds that traffic infraction summons and complaint must include a variety of information including the officer’s signature, it does not specify what form the signature should take.

Also, it pointed out its own precedent holds that an original, personally-signed signature is not required under the statute.

“Here, it is undisputed that the ticket issued to Davis included all necessary information regarding the nature of his offense and when and where he was to appear in court to answer for it,” Judge John Baker wrote for the court. “The ticket also included Sergeant (John) Shank’s name, badge number, and police agency. While we do not find that Sergeant Shank’s signature was required to take any certain form, even if there was such a requirement, the failure to meet it would have been a mere technicality.”
