Ivy Tech to Hold 13th Annual CRUISE-IN Event

The public is invited to Ivy Tech Community College’s 13th Annual CRUISE-IN Saturday, July 29 from 4 – 8 p.m. at the main campus in Evansville, 3501 N. First Avenue.

The annual event is free and open to the public, and typically attracts between 200-400 visitors. Food will be for sale, provided by NOM food truck.

Attendees can expect to see street rods, trucks, and other unique cars from around the Tri-State. The event is coordinated by students in Ivy Tech’s popular Automotive Technology program and is sponsored by NAPA Auto Parts and Expressway Dodge .

Local companies such as Car Quest, Advanced Auto, Barton Automotive, and many more will be in attendance.

In addition, tours of the Automotive Technology department will be offered between 5 and 6 p.m.

Messer Urges Senate to Heed President’s Call and Pass Full Obamacare Repeal Now

U.S. Rep. Luke Messer (IN-06) urged the Senate today to heed President Trump’s call to pass a full Obamacare repeal bill now and then work on a replacement package.

President Trump tweeted last night, “Republicans should just REPEAL failing ObamaCare now & work on a new Healthcare Plan that will start from a clean slate. Dems will join in!”

The President’s tweet follows another setback in the Senate’s efforts to pass an Obamacare repeal and replace bill.

“Hoosiers are sick and tired of endless debate on the Obamacare repeal bill, and the failure of Congress to act. This is DC politics as usual, and exactly why Americans sent the President to Washington to shake things up and get something done,” Messer said. We’ve had more than enough time to deliver on this promise to Americans, who have sent us here for three election cycles to repeal this failed law.  I agree with President Trump that we must repeal Obamacare NOW and then work together on a plan to ensure Hoosiers get the health care they want and deserve.”

The House of Representatives passed their plan to repeal and replace Obamacare back in May.

 

AG Hill Encourages Consumers To Act With Caution When Signing Lawn Care And Tree Trimming Contracts

Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill is today asking Hoosiers to be wary of potentially deceptive lawn care and tree trimming services when signing contracts this summer.

With the summer months upon us, many Hoosiers hire lawn care service providers such as mowing and landscaping companies to come to their homes once or twice a month. Many times consumers enter into contracts based on recommendations given by the lawn care service providers without reading the contracts themselves.

However, service providers at times may misrepresent services provided in order to get individuals to sign contracts with their companies. In some cases, contracts feature automatic renewal for the following season if contracts are never formally canceled, leaving Hoosiers out of money by paying for services they may no longer need.

Last week, a judgement was entered in favor of the state after two retired couples were victims of improper business practices in 2014. The two couples were offered tree trimming services from Cutter’s Tree Service. The service providers misrepresented the company in order to get the individuals to sign a contract by telling them that the company was bonded and insured — and that they were licensed arborists. In addition, the service providers told the couples they were in “good standing” on Angie’s List.

After the two couples entered into a contract with the company based on the misrepresentations, the service providers then returned to the individuals and stated that more services were needed, including cutting down the same trees that had already been trimmed. The contracts signed were also not compliant with the Home Improvement Contracts Act, nor did the service providers inform the consumers of their right to cancel the transactions within three days, as required by the Home Solicitation Sales Act.

Hill encourages both homeowners and businesses to carefully read through any contracts they may be considering and — as always – to research companies before signing into agreements. Consumers should ensure they understand the requirements and conditions listed in the event they choose to discontinue the lawn care services.

Dr. Bucshon’s Statement on Senate Inaction

Eighth District Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D.  released the following statement regarding the Senate’s inaction on healthcare:

“Obamacare is collapsing and as a result patients across the country are at risk as premiums skyrocket and insurers flee the exchanges. In Indiana, premiums have increased an average of 74 percent and two of our state’s four insurers recently announced their departure from the Obamacare exchanges. Hoosiers are being priced out of the insurance market, if they can find insurance at all.  This is not the healthcare Americans were promised by President Obama and Congressional Democrats when they passed Obamacare, and certainly not what they deserve,” said Bucshon.

“To me, this is personal.  I spent more than a decade as a surgeon before coming to Congress. This is about the well-being of my constituents who are struggling to access quality, affordable healthcare under Obamacare. That’s why I made a promise to repeal and replace this failed law to help drive down costs, expand access, and get the federal government out of decisions that should be left up to patients and their doctors. The House did its job to fulfill our promise. I’m extremely disappointed that, thus far, the Senate has failed to live up to its commitment to the American people. It’s time for the Senate to act.”

Young, Donnelly indicate support for legal-aid funding

With the budget looming on the agenda of the U.S. Senate, Indiana’s two senators are both supportive of federal funding for legal aid, but neither are putting any dollar amount to their support.

Funding for the Legal Service Corp. is typically uncertain in Congress, but the stakes were raised this year when the budget proposal from the White House zeroed out the annual appropriation. Money for legal aid was included in the budget from the U.S. House of Representatives but the amount provided was $300 million — $85 million less than the amount provided in fiscal year 2017.

Since then the American Bar Association has called upon the upper chamber to fully fund legal services at the level the LSC has requested, $527.8 million.

“The House proposal would represent a 24 percent cut in grants from FY 2017 and result in more people shut out of legal represented when the number of Americans eligible for help (income for a family of four less than $30,750) is at an all-time high of more than 60 million,” ABA president Linda Klein said in a statement.

Sens. Todd Young, Republican, and Joe Donnelly, Democrat, are indicating they want to see funding for legal service providers included in the Senate’s budget. They have not said how much money should be given to LSC.

“As congressional appropriators make difficult decisions with regard to our nation’s spending priorities, Sen. Young supports sufficient funding for legal assistance for low-income Americans within the budget constraints,” said Jay Kenworthy, spokesman for Young.

Donnelly highlighted the work legal aid providers do and the need to sustain the service for the underprivileged.

“Across our states, seniors, veterans and those in rural communities are among the thousands of Hoosiers who rely on the Legal Services Corp. every year,” he said. “We should continue funding the Legal Services Corp. program because it is an essential part of ensuring that more Americans have access to legal representation.”

In the Hoosier state, LSC funding supports Indiana Legal Services, which has nine offices around the state offering legal help to low-income residents. According to the LSC, Indiana Legal Services received a total of $7.23 million in fiscal year 2015, which accounted for 67 percent of the nonprofit’s total revenue. In that same year, ILS served 20,578 people and closed 9,696 cases.
