UE Softball heads to Carbondale on Tuesday

0

Six days after splitting a doubleheader in Evansville, the Purple Aces and Southern Illinois softball squads meet in the rubber match on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Carbondale, Ill. at Charlotte West Stadium.

In the second-to-last home weekend of the season, the Purple Aces dropped two out of three to Indiana State.  The Sycamores took both ends of Saturday’s doubleheader but the Aces were able to earn a 4-2 win in game three.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Morgan Florey got the Aces on the board with a sacrifice fly before Morgan Lambert hit the go-ahead 3-run home run to give UE the win.

In three games this week, Morgan Florey threw 21 innings as she picked up two victories and allowed just three runs.  She began the week with a complete game, 2-hit shutout over Southern Illinois while striking out 12 batters.  She followed that up on Saturday with another gem, going the distance in the opener against Indiana State, giving up just one run on three hits while fanning six batters.

Florey registered her second win of the week on Sunday with another complete game effort.  She is the likely starter on Tuesday at SIU.  In three career starts versus the Salukis, Florey has tossed 27.2 innings while notching an unbelievable 0.76 ERA.  The sophomore has gone the distance in 13 of her last 15 outings while posting a 1.85 ERA (3rd in the MVC).  Her 170 strikeouts leads the league by 30.

Ashlee Kawall and Brittany Hay also have some of the top tallies in the Missouri Valley Conference.  Kawall has notched 20 steals on the season, which ranks second in the conference.  Hay has crossed the plate 34 times this year, the 5th-highest tally in the league.

Limited to a 2-game series due to weather over the weekend, Southern Illinois took two games from Wichita State in a doubleheader on Sunday.  SIU picked up a 3-2 win to start things off before clinching the series with a 5-4 victory.  Shaye Harre paces the team with a .327 average while Merri Anne Patterson leads the Salukis with seven home runs and 37 RBI.

Brianna Jones has notched 11 victories in the circle while accumulating a 2.33 ERA.

CNBC’s Larry Kudlow, Mayor of La Porte, Indiana to testify

Rep. Luke Messer (IN-06), chair of the Republican Policy Committee, announced the first hearing of the recently launched Task Force for the American Worker will be on Tuesday, April 25.

CNBC Senior Contributor Larry Kudlow and Mayor of La Porte, Indiana Blair Milo will testify during the inaugural hearing, which aims to help set a policy agenda for the modern American worker.

WHAT:           “An Agenda for the Modern American Worker” hearing

WHO:              Mr. Larry Kudlow, CNBC Senior Contributor

The Honorable Blair Milo, Mayor of the City of La Porte, IN

Mr. John Friedman, Associate Professor of Economics at Brown University

Mr. Jim Pethokoukis, Editor of AEIdeas and a DeWitt Wallace Fellow

WHEN:           Tuesday, April 25, 2017, 2PM

WHERE:         Rayburn House Office Building 2360, Washington, D.C.

Launched by Chairman Messer, the Task Force for the American Worker is an effort to examine challenges facing modern-day working Americans.

“For generations, the American dream has meant that every American who works hard can find success. But in recent years, frozen paychecks, a tough job market and rising living costs make the American Dream too often seem out of reach,” Messer said. “During the 2016 election, Republicans promised a renewed focus on addressing these challenges and improving the lives of everyday working people. This Task Force is about making those promises a reality.”

The Task Force will hold a series of hearings to examine workforce issues, including stagnant wages and a slow economic recovery, manufacturing, higher education costs, the opioid abuse epidemic, health care, retirement security and trade.  The Task Force will seek to find solutions that help address each of these challenges.

Ivy Tech Community College Honors Faculty Member

0

“Donna Zimmerman, Associate Professor, Automation & Robotics Technology (AART), has been selected as the 2017 recipient of the annualPresident’s Award for Excellence in Instruction for Ivy Tech Community College Southwest,” said Ivy Tech Southwest Chancellor Jonathan Weinzapfel. Ivy Tech Community College has selected 14 full-time faculty members across the state to receive the award. In a tradition that began in 1983, one full-time faculty member will then be selected to receive the Founder’s Award, previously the Glenn W. Sample Award for Excellence in Instruction, the College’s highest honor for faculty.

Zimmerman began at Ivy Tech as an adjunct faculty member 12 years ago, and now has nearly 10 years of full-time teaching with the college. She has led the Advanced Automation and Robotics program for the past five years.

She has been the recipient of numerous other awards and honors including most recently the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development Excellence Award. Donna also received an Award for Excellence from Indiana Career and Technical Education for the AART Service Learning Program in 2016. Other awards include: Ivy Tech Community Engagement Award, 21st Annual Celebration of Leadership Award for the AART program’s service learning component, Ivy Tech Academy for Instructional Excellence in 2009 and was also nominated for the President’s Award for Excellence in Instruction, 2008 and2009.

“Zimmerman is known for her innovative approaches to education,” Weinzapfel said. She has presented a proposed virtual trainer design to a national audience in Lexington, Ky., as well as in San Antonio, Texas. She has given brown bag presentations on lean manufacturing and soft skills and has written about the “I-Learn Generation,” as well as been mentioned in the book “Library Robotics: Library programs to teach Technology Literacy and Reading.”

She teaches service learning to four classes and engages them in many opportunities. Some of the more recent activities include modifying a wheelchair, along with the robotics, welding and automotive programs, and Toyota, and Easter Seals Rehabilitation, so that a disabled student can stand to work on cars in the Automotive Technology Program; has adapted toys for use by the disabled; and collaborated on an autonomous lawnmower with Pike Central High School.

BREAKING NEWS: GOVERNOR HOLCOMB VETOS PUBLIC RECORDS REQUESTS

0

April 24, 2017

The Honorable Brian C. Bosma Speaker
Indiana House of Representatives Statehouse

Indianapolis, IN 46204

MESSAGE FROM GOVERNOR ERIC J. HOLCOMB

Dear Mr. Speaker and Members of the House of Representatives:

By the authority vested in me as Governor of Indiana, under the provisions of Article 5, Section 14, of the Constitution of the State of Indiana, I do hereby veto House Enrolled Act. No. 1523, enacted during the regular session of the 120th General Assembly and related to search fees for public records requests.

While I understand the intent behind the bill to offset the considerable time and expense often devoted to fulfilling public records requests, I view this proposed legislation as contrary to my commitment to providing great government service at a great value for Hoosier taxpayers.

Providing access to public records is a key part of the work public servants perform and is important from a government transparency standpoint. I do not support policies that create burdensome obstacles to the public gaining access to public documents.

I vetoed HEA 1523 for these reasons; however, I support the provision requiring public agencies to provide electronic copies of public records in electronic format (such as emails) if requested.

Finally, I believe there are steps that can be taken administratively to streamline and improve the process for fulfilling public records requests, and I have charged my office to examine the best ways to provide public transparency and access to public records at the highest possible value to taxpayers.

Sincerely,

Eric J. Holcomb Indiana Governor
