Channel 44 News: Vanderburgh Co. Council Requests $4M Cut From Proposed Budget

Vanderburgh Co. Council Requests $4M Cut From Proposed Budget

Millions of dollars in the Vanderburgh County budget could be cut for the upcoming year. The Vanderburgh County Council expressed the need to cut $4 million from the proposed budget throughout various departments.

Major increase requests came from Sheriff Dave Wedding in reference to jail overcrowding with an almost 85% increase. One reason for this is that the Vanderburgh County Jail houses level six felonies from the state, but Sheriff Wedding is working towards covering some of the cost.

Sheriff Dave Wedding said, “We are reimbursed by the state at thirty-five dollars a day to house level six offenders. I’m working with the committee of sheriffs across the state to see if we can’t get that increased to fifty dollars a day to help with the increasing costs that we incur to operate a jail.”

Sheriff Wedding also brought up the need for a new structure to house the growing inmate population.

Vectren Signs 5-Year Gas Supply Contract, Locks In Low Prices

0

To take advantage of low, stable natural gas pricing market conditions, Vectren Energy Delivery of Indiana – South (Vectren South) recently signed a contract with a national supplier to lock in a portion of its natural gas supply through October 2023.

“Natural gas prices continue to remain low and are expected to be into the foreseeable future which has helped keep bills very affordable,” said Brad Ellsworth, president of Vectren Energy Delivery South. “It is certainly good news for our Hoosier customers, as Vectren South has locked in these favorable market conditions for its customers for the five year term.”

Vectren South received Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) approval in 2012 to enter into long-term purchases of natural gas for terms of more than 24 months. Vectren South is taking this long-term approach to natural gas purchases in an effort to achieve the lowest gas cost reasonably possible for its customers. As a reminder, Vectren South has among the lowest natural gas rates in the state. As of January 2017, Vectren South was in position #17 out of 18 companies; with #18 being the lowest cost natural gas company.

Under the terms of the contract, Vectren South will purchase 1.1 million dekatherms annually, which is about 10 percent of the utility’s annual supply purchases, at a cost around $2.90 per dekatherm beginning in November 2018 and continuing through October 2023. Current market conditions provide the opportunity to secure long-term gas supply at this time at an attractive price, while complementing the utility’s long-standing portfolio approach to natural gas acquisition. Vectren South’s remaining supply needs will be met through its portfolio approach of long-term, intermediate-term and short-term purchases, as well as the utilization of its various storage fields throughout the state.

Vectren South does not profit from the sale of natural gas. These costs are passed along to customers at actual commodity prices on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

Vectren South delivers natural gas to approximately 111,000 customers in Daviess, Gibson, Knox, Martin, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh and Warrick counties.

Bamberger, SKO Merger Complete

IL for www.theindianalawyer.com

The merger between Evansville-based Bamberger Foreman Oswald & Hahn LLP and Kentucky-based Stoll Keenon Ogden PLLC was completed Tuesday, one month ahead of the expected closure date.

Bamberger, founded in 1959, and SKO announced the combining of their firms at the end of June. As part of the merger, Bamberger’s offices in Evansville and Indianapolis are now operating as Stoll Keenon Ogden and the Evansville attorneys will be relocating from the Hulman Building to join the SKO office in the Old National Bank headquarters.

“Attorneys and staff on both sides have worked diligently to ensure we were able to conclude this in a short time, and they are to be commended,” said SKO managing director P. Douglas Barr. “The entire firm is now fully engaged in looking toward the future with expanded legal services, deep bench strength in key practice areas, and a significantly enhanced presence across Indiana to offer our clients.”

Stoll Keenon Ogden traces its roots to 1897 and currently has 144 attorneys working in Louisville, Lexington and Frankfort, Kentucky, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as well as Evansville and Indianapolis. The merger with Bamberger more than doubles SKO’s number of attorneys licensed to practice law in the Hoosier state.

In this photo, Bill Burns poses next to his entry in the 14th annual Tri-State Calf Show, which was held at the Evansville Union stockyards in 1950. Behind him stands W. E. Baker, president of Servel, Inc., who purchased the calf. Sponsored by the Evansville Chamber of Commerce and the stockyards, the event drew nearly 600 entries from 4-H Club members in Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky. The calves were shown by breeds, with each breed considered in a class with others from the same state; the state champion from each state then competed for the show’s top prize. The event’s judges represented Purdue University, the University of Illinois, and the University of Kentucky. After the show, 473 calves were sold from the block.

IS IT TRUE AUGUST 1, 2017

5
IS IT TRUE we hope that todays IS IT TRUE will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning a major health issue that we as responsible citizens of this community need to address in a rational and responsible way? …that the EPA has declared that the downtown Jacobsville area is one of the highest lead contaminated sites in America? …its time that our elected officials and the EPA become more pro-active and aggressive in ridding of the contaminated lead in the soil of the Jacobsville area?
IS IT TRUE that the City of Evansville has allowed the EPA to pussyfoot around with the lead contamination issue in the Jacobsville area for 17 years?  …because of that about half of the contaminated sites have been cleaned up? …the real tragedy is that lead poisoning can be treated, but any damage caused by contaminated lead cannot be reversed?
IS IT TRUE that lead poisoning is a very serious health issue that should be dealt with in that most rapid way possible once it is discovered?… lead poisoning is a serious and sometimes fatal condition that occurs when lead builds up in the body?…lead is found in lead-based paints, including paint on the walls of old houses? … lead is also found in art supplies, toys, contaminated dust from being blown by the wind, and some gasoline products?…lead poisoning usually occurs over a period of months or years and can cause severe mental and physical impairment?
IS IT TRUE young children are most vulnerable because they get lead in their bodies by putting the lead containing objects in their mouths, touching the lead and then putting their fingers in their mouths, or by playing barefoot in places with contaminated soil?…lead is more harmful to children because their brains and nervous systems are still developing?…places with heavy metal contamination in the soil like lead have been documented to be autism clusters?
IS IT TRUE lead can lead to intellectual disability and symptoms may include behavior problems, low IQ, poor grades at school, problems with hearing, short- and long-term learning difficulties, and growth delays?…a high, toxic dose of lead poisoning may result in emergency symptoms including severe abdominal pain and cramping, vomiting, muscle weakness, stumbling when walking, seizures, coma, and encephalopathy, which manifests as confusion, coma, and seizures?
IS IT TRUE symptoms of lead poisoning are varied and may affect many parts of the body?…most of the time, lead poisoning builds up slowly following repeated exposures to small quantities of lead?…lead toxicity is rare after a single exposure or ingestion of lead?…signs of repeated lead exposure include abdominal pain, abdominal cramps, aggressive behavior, constipation, sleep problems, headaches, irritability, loss of developmental skills in children, loss of appetite, fatigue, high blood pressure, numbness or tingling in the extremities, memory loss, anemia, and kidney dysfunction?
IS IT TRUE that if you or any of your loved ones who spent considerable time in or around a lead contaminated neighborhood or in a former industrial sites that is contaminated with lead, you owe it to yourself and love ones to seek a medical opinion to determine if you have lead exposure issues?
Todays “READERS POLL” question is: Should our elected officials and the EPA become more aggressive in ridding of the contaminated lead in the soil of the Jacobsville area?
