Woodlawn Theater By Pat Sides

Woodlawn Theater

Following a national trend, several “moving picture houses” opened in Evansville in the early twentieth century. The largest, such as the Victory Theater at Sixth and Main, were concentrated in the downtown district, but for the convenience of movie fans who lived in more remote neighborhoods, smaller theaters operated around the city; these included the Alhambra, Rosedale, Franklin, Columbia, Washington, Ross and others. This image shows the Woodlawn Theater at 1011 N. Main Street, which was built in the early 1920s. It featured cowboy and other popular films. The Woodlawn closed in 1957 and was razed in 1963. Today a gas station sits on the site of the old theater.

DWIGHT YOAKAM TO PLAY AT VICTORY THEATRE SEPTEMBER 13

0

Victory Theatre – Evansville, IN

Wednesday September 13, 2017 at 8:00 p.m.

Dwight Yoakam has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide, placing him in an elite group of global superstars. He has 12 gold albums and 9 platinum or multi-platinum albums, including the triple platinum This Time. Five of those albums have topped Billboard’s Country Albums chart, with another 14 landing in the Top 10. Yoakam’s top singles, include the hits “Guitars, Cadillacs”, “Ain’t That Lonely Yet”,“Honky Tonk Man,” “Please, Please Baby,” “Little Ways,” “I Sang Dixie,” “It Only Hurts When I Cry,” and “Fast as You.” He is a 21-time nominated, 2-time GRAMMY Award winner.

Yoakam’s 2016 release, Swimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars…

harks back to that landmark debut (Guitars, Cadilacs Etc., Etc.) in

its obviously cheeky title, while otherwise looking even farther back by recasting some of Yoakam’s most classic songs in

a style that not only predates cowpunk but antecedes his beloved Bakersfield sound. Yoakam even remakes “Guitars,

Cadillacs” in the style of “Man of Constant Sorrow.” No one is ever going to mistake a star so renowned for favoring snug

jeans with a Soggy Bottom Boy, but here, he clinches his status as at least an honorary Clinch Mountain lad. The original

idea was to make it a covers album, before it ended up being an album of Dwight Yoakam covers, with one notable exception – a cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain.”

In addition to his musical career, Yoakam is a formidable film and television actor, capable of seamlessly melting into his roles, and impressively standing toe-to-toe with some of the world’s top thespians over the course of his storied and successful acting career, including Jodie Foster, Tommy Lee Jones, Jared Leto, Forest Whitaker, and Matthew McConaughey.

Songs of the 60s

Whether you grew up in the heyday of the 60s rock and roll revolution or you were born later and deeply love the timeless tunes of the 1960s, Decades Rewind will make this era feel like it’s happening again. The Decades Rewind musicians play these songs with the same passion that they were originally performed with because they understand just how important these songs are. Decades Rewind performs songs from groups and musicians like Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Chubby Checker, the Beach Boys, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Doors, and tons more!

70s Music Hits

The 70s were a time of great change and great variety in popular music. Rock changed and became both more majestic as recording budgets swelled to unbelievable levels and more brash and angry as punk rock and heavy metal rose from the depths of rock’s fringes. Pop rock got slicker and disco appeared almost out of nowhere. Funk and soul grew in popularity and set the stage for artists like Prince and Rick James. When you come see Decades Rewind, you’ll get a sampling of everything that made the 70s such an exciting time for music, including hits from the Kiki Dee Band, The Who, Parliament, The Gap Band, Stevie Wonder, ABBA, Queen, and many more!

80s Music Superhits

If the 60s were about birthing new styles of music and the 70s were about experimentation, the 80s are about combination. During the 1980s we saw many different styles of music crossing over with each other to form new styles and genres. Dance music could be funky, it could be cold, it could rock. Rock could be dancy, anthemic, or it could be lush. Decades Rewind brings a ton of these hits back to the stage including songs from Pat Benatar, Prince, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Queen, Foreigner, Huey Lewis & The News, and tons of your other favorite musicians.

The Theatrical Music Performance of Your Life, Decades Rewind is coming to Aiken Theatre on Saturday, August 19 at 7:30pm. Tickets go on sale Friday July 14 at 10:00am. Seats are 35.00 & 45.00 Group Sales available for 10 or more, please contact our Box Office at 812-435-5770 ext. 211. Veterans with ID save $5 at the Box Office. Bankruptcy filings in Indiana slipped slightly in 2016 while average monthly income inched higher, mirroring a national trend highlighted in the annual report filed by the Judiciary with the U.S. Congress.

The report, required by Congress under the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005, reviews the chapter 7, 11 and 13 filings by individuals who have primarily consumer debt. For the calendar year of 2016, the aggregated total liabilities of $191 billion was nearly triple the aggregated assets of $72 billion.

This represents a decline in total assets by consumer debtors of 7 percent from 2015 and a drop in total liabilities of about 8 percent. Overall, consumer bankruptcy petitions sank 6 percent from 2015 to 750,000.

Within Indiana, filings dropped 9 percent from a total of 25,203 in 2015 to 22,915 last year.

The Northern District reported 9,434 cases in 2016. Total assets were $562 million and total liabilities were $984.2 million. A year earlier, the number of cases reached 10,359 while assets and liabilities totaled $646.2 million and $1.14 billion, respectively.

Similarly, the Southern District reported 13,481 bankruptcy cases last year. Total assets were $793.5 million and total liabilities were $1.4 billion. In 2015, there were 14,844 cases with assets totaling $920.9 million and liabilities totaling $1.60 billion.

Nationally, the average monthly income reported by debtors in 2016 was $2,668 and the average monthly expenses were $2,590. This is up marginally from 2015 where the average monthly income was $2,636 and the average monthly expenses were $2,581.

Indiana was slightly below the national averages.

Debtors in the Northern District reported an average monthly income of $2,494 and average monthly expenses of $2,380. A year early, the average monthly income was $2,465 and the average monthly expenses were $2,370.

Likewise, in the Southern District, debtors had an average monthly income of $2,602 and average monthly expenses of $2,489. In 2015, the average monthly income was $2,552 and average monthly expenses were $2,466.

Evansville A Contender At All-Star Break

0

The Evansville Otters enter this week’s Frontier League All-Star break 29-21 after a three-game sweep of the Joliet Slammers last weekend at Bosse Field to close out the first half of the 2017 regular season.

The sweep over the Slammers was the second this season for Evansville, after sweeping the Gateway Grizzlies June 20-22 at Bosse Field.

Evansville’s best stretch of the first half came in late June, when the Otters enjoyed a six-game winning streak June 17-25. The streak started with a 9-4 win in Washington, Pa. and during the streak, the Otters outscored the opposition 35-11.

Offensively, the Otters have two players in the top 10 of the Frontier League in batting average with John Schultz (.342) sixth and Dane Phillips (.326) ninth.

Phillips is also seventh in runs (38), ninth in hits (61), tied for second in doubles (16) and tied for ninth in home runs (9).

Josh Allen is tied for fourth in triples (3), fifth in runs (41) and ninth in walks (33)

Jeff Gardner leads the league in home runs with 13 and is fifth in RBIs (41).

Alejandro Segovia is also tied for ninth in league home runs (9) and is second in hit by pitches (10).

Max Duval has been the ace in Evansville’s starting rotation and he’s tied for fourth in the league with six wins. Duval is first in the Frontier League with 86 strikeouts and teammate Felix Baez is second (73). Duval is also 10th in innings pitched (64.0).

Kyano Cummings is tied for second in the league in appearances on the mound with 25.

Randy McCurry is fourth in saves with 12.

The first half of the season provided a couple milestone moments for the franchise as Shane Weedman threw a no-hitter in a 4-0 win May 13 at Southern Illinois. The no-hitter was the second in franchise history and the first since July 9, 2014 when Chad James no-hit the Traverse City Beach Bums in a seven-inning game.

Phillips tied a Frontier League record with three home runs in a single game in Evansville’s 7-3 win over River City May 30. Phillips joined former Otter Jeff Goldbach as Otters players to homer three times in a game as Goldbach accomplished his feat on Aug. 20, 2005 against River City.

The Otters rallied from a 9-0 deficit on Bosse Field’s Opening Night May 19 against Gateway, beating the Grizzlies 13-10. The nine-run comeback matched Evansville’s rally against Kalamazoo on Aug. 5, 1996, when the Otters fell behind 9-0 before winning 12-11 in 10 innings.

Two days later in the series finale, Otters staff, coaches and players from 2016 received Frontier League championship rings.

Watch on Otters TV // Otters introduced on Opening Night // Jostens Ring Day at Bosse Field // Shane Weedman’s final out for no-hitter

As a team offensively; Evansville is first in the Frontier League with 57 home runs, third in hits (441), third in RBIs (251), third in total bases (703) and fifth in walks (188).

The Otters pitching staff leads the league with 474 strikeouts.

Evansville is 17-7 at Bosse Field in 2017 after going 28-17 in the regular season a year ago. On the road, the Otters are 12-14 this season.

Once the All-Star break ends Friday, Evansville will play 24 of the final 45 regular season games at Bosse Field–including a 24 of 36 game stretch from July 21 through Aug. 31. The stretch doesn’t reflect the suspended game from June 18 in Washington that will be completed at Bosse Field before the regularly scheduled home game on July 22 at 5:35 p.m.

The Otters are 2.5 games out of first place in the FL West behind 32-19 Florence. In the Wild Card, Evansville currently occupies the top spot, one game ahead of a two-way tie for the final playoff spot between the Windy City Thunderbolts and Washington Wild Things.

Evansville will play the first-place Freedom in two more series, first a three-game series at Bosse Field Aug. 8-10 before traveling to Kentucky the following week to play three more games over a two-day span Aug. 16-17 at Florence.

The Otters will play one more series each against two other playoff contenders, on the road at Windy City (July 18-20) and at home against Washington (July 21-23).

Schaumburg is currently pacing the FL East at 34-16, six games ahead of Windy City and Washington.

Evansville’s longest homestand of the season will take place later this month when the Otters host Washington, Traverse City and Schaumburg July 21-30.

Manager Andy McCauley is seven wins shy of 350 with Evansville. McCauley is first in franchise history in regular seasons wins (343) and games managed (672).

Since Opening Night at Southern Illinois May 12, the Otters have signed Taylor Hillson, Diego Ibarra, Jake McCoy and Nick Walker. In that same time period, Evansville signed and eventually released Manny DeJesus and Justin Brock.

Kevin Carr, Myles Babitt, Joe Webb, Mitchell Ho, Xyruse Martinez, Taylore Cherry and Austin Sweet were Opening Night roster players who have been released.

Seven players will represent Evansville at the Frontier League All-Star Game Wednesday in Joliet, Ill. Allen, Duval, Schultz, Gardner, Cummings, Phillips and Segovia were voted for by league managers, coaches, staff and media.

Evansville is averaging 2,138 fans per game so far in 2017, ranking fifth in the 12-team Frontier League. Last season, the Otters finished ninth in attendance with an average of 1,962.

Evansvilleotters.com will have coverage of All-Star festivities in Joliet so check back for updates throughout the week.

The Otters will travel to Gateway on Friday for the first game of a three-game weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and Lucas Corley will provide coverage on WUEV 91.5 FM.

The Evansville Otters are the 2006 and 2016 Frontier League champions. Group packages and single game tickets are now on sale. For more information, visit evansvilleotters.com or call 812-435-8686.
