Attorney General Hill Authors Op-Ed Piece Promoting Civility

The Times of Northwest Indiana on Sunday published an op-ed piece by Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill encouraging political leaders and citizens alike to practice civility in all interactions. Hill wrote the piece after attending a banquet April 13 in Hobart, Indiana, in celebration of World Civility Day.

Hill drew upon episodes from U.S. history showing that incivility in American political discourse began early in the nation’s experience – such as when Thomas Jefferson paid a journalist to publish scathing insults of rival John Adams.

“Every generation, it seems, must fight the same temptations,” Hill wrote. “We should admire those leaders who resist such impulses and show grace to their political foes.”

Hill lauded former President Ronald Reagan as an example of someone who practiced civility.

“You can hold onto your convictions while at the same time negotiating with people of different views,” Hill wrote. “A degree of flexibility is often necessary to move forward any positive agenda.”

Messer Joins CNBC, Speaks on House Floor  

WASHINGTON (Wednesday, April 26, 2017) — House Republican Policy Chair Rep. Luke Messer (IN-06) led the inaugural hearing of the Task Force for the American Worker yesterday to address challenges facing workers today, including a slow economic recovery, wage stagnation and a loss of faith in the American Dream.

CNBC Senior Contributor Larry Kudlow and Mayor of La Porte, Indiana Blair Milo were among panelists who testified at the hearing, titled “An Agenda for the Modern American Worker.”

Messer joined CNBC Squawk Box to discuss the launch of the new Task Force and how to combat these issues.

“Where the rubber meets the road for the average American is wages,” Messer said on CNBC, “Everyday Americans want to know what’s going to happen so that they get a part of this economy… they get a piece of the American Dream.”

Messer also spoke on the House Floor about why he launched the Task Force for the American Worker.

 

“For generations, our nation has celebrated the American Dream. I call it the American Promise… the simple idea that if you work hard, you will be rewarded,” Messer said on the House Floor. Unfortunately for many Americans, that promise no longer rings true today. Pay checks are frozen and American families are having a harder and harder time making ends meet. We need a renewed focus on improving the lives of everyday working Americans.”

New Indiana Law Addresses Legal And Civil Issues For People Who Forcibly Enter A Locked Vehicle To Remove An Animal

On April 26th, Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb signed Indiana House Bill 1085 into law. The law addresses legal and civil issues for civilians who forcibly enter a vehicle to remove a domestic animal. There are several key points to this law that people need to be aware of before taking any action.

—-The animal must be a domestic animal as defined by Indiana statute
—-You must feel the animal is imminent danger of serious bodily injury (The law does not specify hot or cold temps)
—-You MUST call 911 or contact a law enforcement officer, animal control officer, a firefighter, or other emergency responder BEFORE you forcibly enter the vehicle
—-You will be responsible for 50% of the cost to repair damage that you cause
—-You MUST only use the amount of force reasonably necessary to enter the vehicle
—-You MUST remain with the animal until one of the previously listed public safety officials arrive
—-You will be immune fro m criminal liability if you followed the law
—-The owner of the animal is immune from civil liability if you are injured by an animal after you forcibly enter a vehicle
—-Public safety officials and certain veterinary professionals are immune from all criminal and civil liability

If you are concerned about an animal that has been left in a car in the city of Evansville, we recommend that you call 911 and wait for a public safety official to arrive. Doing so will protect you from all potential liabilities. If you feel you can’t wait, please follow the listed guidelines to ensure you receive the protections provided by the new law.

Aces Softball finishes home slate this weekend

UE welcomes Illinois State to Cooper Stadium

In their final home series of the season, the University of Evansville softball team welcomes league-leading Illinois State to Cooper Stadium for a 3-game set.

Play begins on Saturday with a noon doubleheader before an 11 a.m. single game completes the series on Sunday.

Evansville is coming off of a hard-fought 1-0 loss at Southern Illinois on Tuesday.  A pitcher’s duel for the ages, UE starter Morgan Florey and SIU’s Brianna Jones duked it out for over 9 innings before the Salukis scored the game-winner in the bottom of the 9th.

Florey tossed 9 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out seven.  UE had seven hits on the day with Hayli Scott accounting for two of them.

Over her previous four games, Morgan Florey has thrown 30 1/3 innings as she picked up two victories and allowed just four runs. She began last week with a complete game, 2-hit shutout over Southern Illinois while striking out 12 batters.  She followed that up on Saturday with another gem, going the distance in the opener against Indiana State, giving up just one run on three hits while fanning six batters.  Florey registered her second win of the week on Sunday with another complete game effort before going the distance in Carbondale on Tuesday.

In between games on Saturday, nine UE seniors will be recognized for their contributions to the program.  The Class of 2017 includes: Mickaela Fleming, Courtney Land, Susan Norris, Michal Luckett, Hayli Scott, Chandra Parr, Ashlee Kawall, Morgan Lambert and Samantha Fleming.

Illinois State sits atop the Missouri Valley Conference with an 18-3 mark in the league while recording a 28-17 overall record.  Shannon Felde is the top hitter for the Redbirds, standing at .416.  Jordan de los Reyes checks in with a .393 average as ISU hits .314 as a team.  Sarah Finck holds a 20-8 record in the circle while notching a 2.38 ERA.

Tkachenko and Yamada earn MVC awards

Duo honored at league banquet

 Diana Tkachenko was named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year while Chieko Yamada earned a spot on the league’s All-Select Team as the MVC announced its women’s tennis postseason awards on Thursday.

Tkachenko completed a spectacular freshman campaign at UE as she went 31-8 overall and 6-1 in conference play.  She also had a nice fall season, highlighted by a 2nd place finish at #2 singles in the MVC Individual Tournament.  Her impressive run through the MVC included wins over SIU, UNI, Missouri State, Drake, Bradley and Illinois State.

“I knew that we had something very special in this freshman class and none more so than Diana. She has exceeded my expectations this season at every turn. Diana has put together not only one of the best seasons for a freshman, but the best season by an Aces women’s tennis player, ever,” Purple Aces head coach Jayson Wiseman said.  “She already has 44 combined wins and 31 singles victories which is nothing short of amazing. I know that she feels very honored to have been chosen Freshman of the Year especially considering the stiff competition she was up against for the award.”

Slotted at #1 singles for the Purple Aces in 2016-16, Chieko Yamada won 18 matches while going an impressive 4-3 in conference matches in the top spot.  She defeated UNI, SIU, Bradley and Missouri State.  Yamada also picked up 14 doubles victories this year.

“Chieko has been such a phenomenal edition to our team this year. After a slow start, she has really nailed down the #1 singles position and has been absolutely on fire over the last couple months of the season,” Wiseman added.  “Being named to the All Select team is a well-deserved honor that she has worked very hard for.”

Evansville begins the MVC Championship on Friday against Drake.
