Long Ball Dooms Eagles In Loss To MSU-Mankato

0

A pair of home runs in the second and third innings proved to be the difference maker as University of Southern Indiana Softball suffered a 5-0 setback to No. 6 Minnesota State University-Mankato in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Softball Championship Thursday night.

The first of the home runs was a solo shot with one out in the bottom of the second inning off the bat of senior third baseman Samantha Buhmann, while the second was a back-breaking three-run shot in the third frame that went off the glove of a leaping Olivia Clark-Kittleson (Carbondale, Illinois) that gave the Mavericks a commanding 5-0 lead. The home run, off the bat of freshman first baseman Amber Kral, capped off a four-run third inning for the Mavericks.

NFCA Division II Player of the Year Coley Ries held the No. 9 Screaming Eagles’ offense at bay as USI was held to just five hits and six base runners.

USI (46-13), which was shutout for just the third time this year, had runners at first and second with one out in both the fourth and seventh innings as the Eagles looked to make a comeback. However, a strikeout and a pop-up in the fourth ended USI’s threat, while a game-ending double-play in the seventh ended any chance for an Eagles’ comeback.

Ries (37-3) earned the win for the Mavericks, who improved to 60-7 on the year. She racked up seven strikeouts and issued just one walk in the complete-game victory.

Freshman pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt (Louisville, Kentucky) suffered the loss after giving up five runs off four hits in three innings of work. She falls to 29-3 with the setback.

USI faces the loser of the game between Armstrong Atlantic State University and the University of West Florida Friday at 5:30 p.m. (CDT). The game will be aired on WSWI 95.7 FM, while live stats and video can be accessed at GoUSIEagles.com.

Three Eagles net All-America accolades

0

University of Southern Indiana freshman pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt (Louisville, Kentucky), senior catcher Haley Hodges (Portage, Indiana) and junior first baseman Marleah Fossett (Brownsburg, Indiana) each earned All-America honors Wednesday in announcements by the National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association and the Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association.

Leonhardt and Hodges were awarded second and third-team honors, respectively, at the NFCA Awards Banquet Wednesday night, while Leonhardt and Fossett were respectively named third-team and honorable mention by D2CCA in a release earlier in the day.

The D2CCA Midwest Region Pitcher of the Year and the Great Lakes Valley Conference Freshman of the Year, Leonhardt enters the NCAA Division II Softball Championship Thursday with a 27-2 record, a 1.46 ERA and 189 strikeouts.

Leonhardt becomes the first pitcher in program history to earn All-America honors. She broke the program record for wins in a single-season and her 11 shutouts is two shy of the program’s single-season mark.

Hodges earns All-America honors for the second straight year after earning first-team accolades by the NFCA, D2CCA and Herosports.com a year ago. She leads the Screaming Eagles in batting average (.414), doubles (14), home runs (11) and RBIs (52).

In 2017, Hodges became the program’s all-time career leader in home runs (44) and RBIs (174); and is the first player in program history with two seasons of 50-plus RBIs. A year ago, Hodges set the program’s single-season marks for home runs (22) and RBIs (72).

Fossett is earning her first All-America award and is the eighth player in program history to collect the honor. She is currently second on the team with a .405 batting average and tied for first with 14 doubles.

In 2017, Fossett has racked up five home runs and 32 RBIs and leads the team with a .527 on-base percentage. She set the single-season program record by being hit by a pitch 21 times this year.

The All-America awards marks the first time in program history that USI Softball has racked up three All-Americans in one year and the first time since 1995 that USI has had multiple All-Americans.

USI, ranked No. 9 in the nation, takes on No. 6 Minnesota State University-Mankato Thursday, with a new start time of 4 p.m. (CDT), to begin the NCAA II Softball Championship.

MAY 25, 2017 “IS IT TRUE”

7

IS IT TRUE we would appreciate your taking time to watch an  interesting Channel 44 News report concerning Lincoln Estates residents receiving letters of tenancy for terminations?

IS IT TRUE we have been told that Mayor Winnecke has known about this issue long before it was made public?  …at last night May 24, 207 “Mayors Traveling City Hall” meeting Mayor Winnecke looked mis-informed and totally surprised  to hear about the letters of tenancy for terminations given to the residents of Lincoln Estates?

IS IT TRUE that Lincoln Estates was sold to a bank named Bayview Loaning Service LLC in 2016?   … the bank then sold this property to a newly formed corporation called City Pointe Evansville, LLC earlier this year?  …we wonder what are the names of the people who own the newly formed City Pointe Evansville, LLC?  …we also wonder who were the owners of Lincoln Estates before Bayview Loaning Service LLC  took over the ownership of this property in 2016?

IS IT TRUE that the entire decision of giving Lincoln Estates residents letters of tenancy for terminations smells of backroom political wheeling and dealing at the expense of the unemployed,  elderly people who have serious health issues. the poor and disabled people of color of the 4th Ward?

IS IT TRUE after viewing the attached Channel 44 News report we feel that you might want to do something to help the soon to be displaced residents of Lincoln Estates?  …because Lincoln Estates houses around 50 families and individuals who uses a governmental subsidized voucher program you should immediately call and file a formal complaint against the new owners of Lincoln Estates, City Pointe Evansville LLC with:

OFFICE OF THE SPECIAL INSPECTOR GENERAL FOR THE TROUBLED ASSET RELIEF PROGRAM

CONTRACT THE SPECIAL AGENT INVESTIGATIONS DIVISION

OFFICE NUMBER 202-927-9988

IS IT TRUE we also heard that a copy of the Channel 44 News report was sent to the above Special Agent Investigations Division for their review and opinions.  …it looks like this issue should now be considered a developing story!

BELOW IS THE CHANNEL 44 NEWS REPORT FOR YOU TO REVIEW

Dr. Bucshon’s Statement on President’s Budget Blueprint

2

Eighth District Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. released the following statement regarding the Trump Administration’s proposed Fiscal Year 2018 budget released this week:

“President Trump put forth a fiscally responsible budget blueprint that prioritizes our national defense and military, expanding job opportunities, and growing wages for hardworking families over growth of government and bureaucracy in Washington, D.C.,” said Bucshon. “While these priorities are a good starting point for Congress, there are specific portions of the budget blueprint, like the President’s proposed reduction in funding for medical research at institutions like the NIH, that I do have concerns with. Ultimately, the Constitution grants Congress the power of the purse and responsibility for establishing the federal budget. I look forward to working hand-in-hand with the Trump Administration as Congress works to pass a responsible, balanced budget that respects hard-working taxpayers while also providing funding for the priorities of the American people.”

Justices To Hear Arguments In Evansville ‘Military-Style Assault’ Case

Justices To Hear Arguments In Evansville ‘Military-Style Assault’ Case

IL for www.theindianalawyer.com

Indiana’s Supreme Court is set to hear cases Thursday involving the withdrawal of guilty pleas, the use of search warrants and the revocation of good-time credit.

The high court will first hear the case of Cody Mikework v. State of Indiana, 04A03-1605-CR-01122, on petition to transfer at 9 a.m. After initially pleading guilty to one count of Level 5 felony burglary and three counts of Level 4 felony arson, Cody Mikework moved to withdraw his guilty plea, but both the trial court and Indiana Court of Appeals denied his motion.

Mikework has petitioned the high court to grant transfer to his case because he claims the trial court violated his rights under Boykin v. Alabama, 395 U.S. 238 (1969), which holds the record for a guilty plea must show the defendant voluntarily and knowingly waived the right to the privilege against compulsory incrimination, the right to a jury trial and the right to confront one’s accusers. According to Mikework’s petition to transfer, “the record indicates that the trial court read out loud only two of the three required Boykin rights, neglecting to mention the right of confrontation.”

After the Mikework case, the court will move on to two cases for which transfer has already been granted. First, the justices will hear the case of Mario Watkins v. State of Indiana, 82S01-1704-CR-00191, in which Mario Watkins was convicted on various felony and misdemeanor drug convictions after a “military-style assault” on his Evansville home led to the discovery of various narcotics and a weapon.

A divided Indiana Court of Appeals reversed those convictions, finding the assault on Watkins’ home, which included the use of a flash bang, was unreasonable. The majority held in a January opinion that Evansville police could have presented Watkins with a search warrant that had already been issued to gain access to his home, rather than using the flash bang and a battering ram.

Oral arguments in Watkins’ case will begin at 9:45 a.m.

Finally, the court will hear the case of Richard Shepard v. State of Indiana, 84S01-1704-CR-00190, which involves the question of whether a man whose placement in a county community corrections program should have been awarded good-time credit.

According to the state, the answer is “no,” as Richard Shepard lost 225 days of credit as a sanction for violating various community corrections rules. Though he was originally entitled to 190 days of credit, Shepard’s 225-day sanction zeroed out the days he had earned, the state argued.

Shepard, however, contends only the Department of Correction could make the decision to revoke his good-time credit, so the trial court erred in making that decision itself. Oral arguments in that case will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Indiana’s high court is entering its second week of oral arguments as a four-person bench, as Gov. Eric Holcomb is still in the process of selecting the next Indiana Supreme Court justice to replace recently-retired Justice Robert Rucker.
