UE women’s soccer travels to Chicago for clash with UIC

0
It will be the Purple Aces second visit to Flames Field

CHICAGO — The University of Evansville women’s soccer will look to take a series lead against the UIC Flames on Thursday evening.
UE women’s soccer added another point to their resume in a 1-1 draw against Drake over the weekend. Junior forward Amy Velazquez (Avon, Ind. / Avon HS) scored the tying goal for the Aces in the 83rd minute of the match for her second goal of the season. Velazquez took the ball from a Bulldog defender up into the 12 and passed over to senor forward Hailey Autenrieb (Cincinnati / Seton HS) on the right side of the penalty box, who quickly returned it to Velazquez at the six. Velazquez struck the ball with her right foot and blew it past Drake’s goalkeeper into the center of the net to help Evansville to another MVC point.

UIC is one of the Aces newer opponent in women’s soccer as the two teams never faced each other prior to the Flames addition to the MVC in the 2022 season. Neither team has won on the road in the series since beginning play in 2022. The Aces will look to see if they can get the first road win and take the series lead on Thursday evening. Both games in the series have been decide by a single goal with only two goals tallied so far in two meetings.

The Flames come into Thursday’s match as one of the conference’s leaders with an MVC record of 3-0-2 after having seven losses in the non-conference season. UIC put together a big win over Indiana State on Tuesday with their highest scoring output of the season with three goals scored. It was the Flames fifth shutout of the year and their fifth game unbeaten in conference play. UIC is led by junior forward Riley Collett with eight points from three goals and two assists.

Velazquez is now tied with freshman defender Emmy Brenner (Arlington, Tenn. / St. Benedict at Auburndale HS) for most goals on the season with two each. Autenrieb and Velazquez are tied as the Aces total offensive leaders with five points. Autenrieb has one goal and three assists while Velazquez has two goals and one assist.

Rollett qualified for NCAA Zones against Centre College

LOUIS. – Maddie Rollett’s stellar start to the 2024-25 season continued on Wednesday as she was named the Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Diver of the Week for the second time in as many weeks.

Rollett has been nearly perfect in the opening two weeks of the fall.  After sweeping both diving events at the Butler Double Dual, she accomplished the same feat at Centre College on Friday.

In the 1-meter dive, Rollett earned a score of 273.45.  That mark was high enough to qualify her for the NCAA Diving Zones.  She followed that up with a 252.90 in the 3-meter event, giving her another victory.

Trailblazers get 20th win of the season in Region road win at John A. Logan CARTERVILLE

0

CARTERVILLE, Ill. – The Vincennes University volleyball team picked up their 20th win of the season Tuesday night as the Blazers headed to John A. Logan College in Carterville, Ill. for a Region 24 showdown with the Volunteers.

Vincennes was able to come out on top in this match between the two teams currently at the top of the Region 24 standings, taking the match in four sets 25-22, 17-25, 25-21, 25-17.

The match was very close from the very beginning as the two teams traded early runs in the opening set before the Blazers were able to rally from behind with a 9-1 scoring run to take an 18-14 lead.

The two teams traded side outs until the Volunteers cut the deficit down to one at 23-22 before VU closed out set one with back-to-back points to take the set 25-22 and grab the early 1-0 match lead.

Set two again began as a back-and-forth battle before the Volunteers broke away with six straight points and would ride the home crowd momentum to a 25-17 set two victory and even the match at 1-1 going to a pivotal third set.

The teams again traded scoring runs early in set three with VU gaining the upper hand with four straight points to take an 18-15 advantage.

After another series of side outs, VU was able to close out the third set strong with a 3-0 scoring run to take set three 25-21 and regain the match lead at 2-1.

The Trailblazers rode this momentum into set four as VU jumped out to an early 10-3 lead in the fourth set.

John A. Logan would attempt to battle back and force a fifth set but were unable to overcome the Vincennes lead as the Blazers closed out set four 25-17 to take the match 3-1 over the host Volunteers.

“We saw this game not as any kind of revenge, but as getting redemption,” VUVB Head Coach Gary Sien said. “We lost not only a game the last time we played them but a bit of our being. We think we got that back tonight.”

“Sounds simple enough but we played together,” Sien added. “Even after that tough loss to Wallace State, we stayed together. They are so tough minded, we are so proud of their play and effort.”

“Strategically, we started right off the bat with serving as tough as we can and going at certain players,” Sien said. “We were trying to disrupt their offense with that and then block. Our front row was exceptional tonight as we touched nearly every hit with our block.”

The VU offense was led by sophomore Elisa Dalla Pozza (Vincenza, Italy) who controlled the game at the net with 19 kills, six blocks, three digs, two set assists and an ace.

Sophomores Laura Tavares (Merida, Venezuela) and Isadora Dias (Rio Grande de Norte, Brazil) also reached double-digit kills, each recording 10 kills in the match.

Tavares would add a pair of blocks and a dig, while Dias filled up the stats sheet with seven digs, two aces, one block and one set assist.

Prison Made Quilts on Display at Indiana Criminal Justice Association Meeting in Evansville

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

While the Indiana Criminal Justice Association is meeting in Evansville today and tomorrow, a special display of quilts made by incarcerated men will be held at Wabash Valley Correctional Facility. Over 60 quilts will be on display in the exhibit hall at Old National Events Plaza from 8-12 today (10/9) and tomorrow (10/10) from 1-4. admission is free.

The quilters are incarcerated men in the Purposeful Living Units Serve (P.L.U.S.) Program at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility (WVCF), a maximum security prison in Carlisle, Indiana. There are some serious quilters in this group. The group has made quilts for the families of every Hoosier soldier who died in the line of duty.

The inmates who are serving time for having committed the worst sorts of violent crimes (some of them are incarcerated for life without parole) are not the type you usually visualize when you think about quilters. Of course, stereotypes are always wrong, but clichéd views of both quilters and prison inmates would be utterly off the mark in the case of the WVCF’s P.L.U.S. Program quilters.

Who leads in Indiana Polls?

For Your Polling Pleasure

OCTOBER 9,24

One thing I’ve been doing for the past few years is polling. I use a company called ARW Strategies that is out of the Chicago suburbs. Owner Andrew Weissert has polled past governor and U.S. Senate races. Heck, I even had him poll the mayor’s race for me in 2023, the general, not the primary, just in case you were wondering. So, as tradition dictates, here we go a polling.

First, let’s get some survey stuff out of the way. We polled 600 likely voters statewide, Sept. 24-26, and the poll had a margin of error of four percent.   And remember, polls are not predictions; they are snapshots of time. We asked about several statewide races and a couple of issues as well. In the presidential race, Donald Trump beats Kamala Harris—55-39. Big shocker. In the race for the U.S. Senate, brace yourself, Jim Banks is at 49%, and Dr. Valarie McCray is at 35. Andy Horning was at 2.6%. The remaining 13 percent were undecided. And in the race for Attorney General, Todd Rokita is beating Destiny Wells, 51-36.

And then there was the governor’s race.

Our poll showed Mike Braun at 44, Jennifer McCormick at 37, Don Rainwater at 9, and 10 percent were undecided.  While Braun had a seven-point lead over McCormick, which was the smallest of any Republican statewide candidate, he should not be in the mid-40s. Businessman, U.S. senator, you know the story. We’ve seen the commercials. If Braun is at 44% with a month to go before Election Day. He may cross the finish line, beaten and bruised, but forget about a mandate.

And our polls on the statewide races were consistent with other statewide public polls.

We also asked what Hoosiers thought of Gov. Eric Holcomb’s job performance as he leaves the office. The poll showed that 55% approved of the job Holcomb has done, while 35% disapproved. What’s interesting about that is that when asked if they thought the State of Indiana was on the right or wrong track, 42% said things were on the wrong track, while 37% said things were headed in the right direction.

We also surveyed Hoosiers’ thoughts on several issues. Abortion: 53% said it should be legal in all or most cases, 39% said it should be illegal in all or most cases. When asked what the big issue Indiana lawmakers should address in the next session was, it wasn’t property taxes. For all the shouting in the political peanut galleys these days, property taxes were fifth. First was inflation and rising prices: 23%. Jobs and the economy were second, at 13%. The border and immigration were at 12.6%. Followed by education at 12.1%. And bringing up the rear, property taxes at 9%. It didn’t even hit double digits.

A full 60% supported universal school vouchers, while 32% opposed them. When we asked about trust in government, the feds came in at only 32%, 57% trusted the state, and 65% trusted their locals. Trust with the courts was at 62%. And 59% said our politics has become too coarse and personal.

Of course, I had to ask the marijuana question. We didn’t ask about legalization for medicinal or recreational purposes because a clear majority of Hoosiers are in the plus column. We asked, “Have you ever tried it?” The results were 41% multiple times and 13% once. 40% didn’t know, and 5% were unsure. No offense, but if you don’t know whether you did or didn’t, you probably did and did it well.

So that’s all we have. I have to the folks who stepped up and donated or pledged to done to make this happen. Once again, polling is part art, part science. Polls are not predictions; they are snapshots in time. But if you put them together, you do get trends. And those trends will last right through Election Day.
