Dr. Bucshon’s Statement on Senate Inaction

2

Eighth District Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D.  released the following statement regarding the Senate’s inaction on healthcare:

“Obamacare is collapsing and as a result patients across the country are at risk as premiums skyrocket and insurers flee the exchanges. In Indiana, premiums have increased an average of 74 percent and two of our state’s four insurers recently announced their departure from the Obamacare exchanges. Hoosiers are being priced out of the insurance market, if they can find insurance at all.  This is not the healthcare Americans were promised by President Obama and Congressional Democrats when they passed Obamacare, and certainly not what they deserve,” said Bucshon.

“To me, this is personal.  I spent more than a decade as a surgeon before coming to Congress. This is about the well-being of my constituents who are struggling to access quality, affordable healthcare under Obamacare. That’s why I made a promise to repeal and replace this failed law to help drive down costs, expand access, and get the federal government out of decisions that should be left up to patients and their doctors. The House did its job to fulfill our promise. I’m extremely disappointed that, thus far, the Senate has failed to live up to its commitment to the American people. It’s time for the Senate to act.”

Young, Donnelly indicate support for legal-aid funding

With the budget looming on the agenda of the U.S. Senate, Indiana’s two senators are both supportive of federal funding for legal aid, but neither are putting any dollar amount to their support.

Funding for the Legal Service Corp. is typically uncertain in Congress, but the stakes were raised this year when the budget proposal from the White House zeroed out the annual appropriation. Money for legal aid was included in the budget from the U.S. House of Representatives but the amount provided was $300 million — $85 million less than the amount provided in fiscal year 2017.

Since then the American Bar Association has called upon the upper chamber to fully fund legal services at the level the LSC has requested, $527.8 million.

“The House proposal would represent a 24 percent cut in grants from FY 2017 and result in more people shut out of legal represented when the number of Americans eligible for help (income for a family of four less than $30,750) is at an all-time high of more than 60 million,” ABA president Linda Klein said in a statement.

Sens. Todd Young, Republican, and Joe Donnelly, Democrat, are indicating they want to see funding for legal service providers included in the Senate’s budget. They have not said how much money should be given to LSC.

“As congressional appropriators make difficult decisions with regard to our nation’s spending priorities, Sen. Young supports sufficient funding for legal assistance for low-income Americans within the budget constraints,” said Jay Kenworthy, spokesman for Young.

Donnelly highlighted the work legal aid providers do and the need to sustain the service for the underprivileged.

“Across our states, seniors, veterans and those in rural communities are among the thousands of Hoosiers who rely on the Legal Services Corp. every year,” he said. “We should continue funding the Legal Services Corp. program because it is an essential part of ensuring that more Americans have access to legal representation.”

In the Hoosier state, LSC funding supports Indiana Legal Services, which has nine offices around the state offering legal help to low-income residents. According to the LSC, Indiana Legal Services received a total of $7.23 million in fiscal year 2015, which accounted for 67 percent of the nonprofit’s total revenue. In that same year, ILS served 20,578 people and closed 9,696 cases.

Ivy Tech Media Opportunity – Service Camp

0

What: Middle School students, High School & College helpers make items for the disabled

When: Wednesday, July 19, 6 to 8pm and Tuesday, July 25, 6 to 8pm.

Where: Ivy Tech Community College Evansville, rooms 169 & 171

Background:  Participating middle school students will attend a camp learning about how automation and robotics technology can help those who have disabilities. Taught by Ivy Tech Program Chair Donna Zimmerman and others, students will learn how to make two different items that will help the disabled and construct them. Items being made include making a tap light into a big button and modifying stuffed animals so they can be actuated with the buttons instead of the small buttons that come on the stuffed animals and are difficult to push if one doesn’t have the fine motor skills to do so. The tap light is wired to the toy so that the person can press anywhere on the big button to make the toy sing and dance.  At the conclusion of the camps, the modified toys will be donated to local agencies. There is no cost for campers to attend camp.

Contact at the event:  Donna Zimmerman, associate professor of Technology and program chair for Advanced Automation and Robotics Technology

Schultz Named Frontier League Player Of The Week

0

The Frontier League has named Evansville Otters outfielder John Schultz the Player of the Week.

Pointstreak, the official statistical provider of the Frontier League and the Independent Professional Baseball Federation, chooses the weekly award.

Schultz earned the fourth league honor for Evansville this season after right-handed pitcher Shane Weedman was selected Pitcher of the Week earlier this year after his no-hit performance against Southern Illinois on May 13 in a 4-0 win against the Miners.

Dane Phillips was selected as the Player of the Week June 12 after he batted .519 with 13 RBIs June 6-11 and Max Duval was Pitcher of the Week June 26 after making two starts the week before, going seven innings in both and earning two wins.

In earning the award, Schultz was 6 for 10 with a .600 batting average in a three-game weekend series against the Gateway Grizzlies. He finished the series with three RBIs and drew six walks against the Grizzlies after playing for the West Division earlier in the week at the Frontier League All-Star Game.

Schultz doubled in the All-Star Game and scored the West’s only run in a 4-1 loss to the East Division in Joliet, Ill. Wednesday. He finished 1 for 2 in his third All-Star Game with Evansville.

A West Lawn, Pa. native, Schultz has been one of the Otters’ most productive players since coming to Evansville in 2013.

After playing collegiately at the University of Pittsburgh, Schultz was drafted in the 34th round of the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft by the Florida Marlins. He spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons with the Marlins organization before signing with Evansville.

With Evansville, Schultz is batting .294 with 37 home runs and 184 RBIs. This season, Schultz is hitting .358 in 45 games so far with 12 doubles, six home runs, 37 RBIs and 34 runs scored.

The Evansville Otters return to Bosse Field Friday with a weekend series against the Washington Wild Things. This weekend’s promotional themes between two playoff contenders feature Indianapolis Colts Night, postgame fireworks, Boy Scout Night, Courier & Press Family Day and Fellowship Day.

Tickets for July 21-23 are still available by going to evansvilleotters.com or calling 812-435-8686. The homestand continues next Tuesday as the Otters welcome Traverse City to Bosse Field for a three-game series before the homestand concludes July 28-30 against Schaumburg.

All three games will air on 91.5 FM WUEV with Lucas Corley providing play-by-play coverage.

The Evansville Otters are the 2006 and 2016 Frontier League champions. Group packages and single game tickets are now on sale. For more information, visit evansvilleotters.com or call 812-435-8686.
