Connor Strain drafted by Los Angeles Dodgers

Strain taken in the 9th round

University of Evansville senior right-handed pitcher Connor Strain was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 9th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday afternoon.

Strain was the 280th overall pick in the draft.  The fifth-year senior recorded a 2-5 record in 2017, but put up stellar numbers.  He posted an impressive 2.62 ERA in 14 starts.  Strain fanned 68 batters in just over 68 innings of work.

“We are thrilled as a program to see Connor get drafted in the 9th round by the Dodgers,” UE head baseball coach Wes Carroll said.  “He has had a great career in an Aces uniform and he is ready for the next step.”

The 2.62 ERA accumulated by Strain in 2017 was second-best in the Missouri Valley Conference and tops among all full-time starting pitchers.  He was recognized for his efforts with a berth on the All-Conference First Team.  Over the course of his senior campaign, the Shelburn, Ind. product had a scoreless streak of 15 innings while allowing just two runs over five starts in the month of April.

“It is great to see another developed player out of our program get the chance to play at the next level,” Carroll added.  “We hope to see him up with Kyle Freeland very soon.”

State Police Employee Accused of Insurance Fraud; Investigation Submitted to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office

0

A nearly four-month long investigation alleging insurance fraud was completed by the Indiana State Police and was recently submitted to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.  The investigation has resulted in the arrest of Lucas P. Zeien, 37, of Evansville, IN.

The state police investigation began on February 13th of this year the result of an anonymous tip. The tip alleged Lucas Zeien and Kerri Zeien had divorced sometime in April of 2008 and Lucas Zeien failed to report the change of marital status and update authorized dependents for purposes of health insurance benefits.  This resulted in Lucas Zeien’s former wife and two children from a previous marriage continuing to utilize health insurance under the plan that covers Indiana State Police personnel.

As a result of this investigation, the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office charged Lucas Zeien with the crime of Insurance Fraud, a Level 6 Felony.

Lucas P. Zeien was appointed to the department as a state police officer on July 8, 2007 and was assigned patrol duties at the Evansville State Police Post until he was later assigned to serve in investigations in August of 2015.  Effective February 22, 2017, as a result of the allegation and subsequent investigation, Zeien was placed on Administrative Duties, with pay, at the Evansville State Police Post.  Since that date, Zeien’s authority to act as a law enforcement officer has been suspended.  Now, as a result of the filing of charges by the Marion County Prosecutor’s office on June 13, 2017, Zeien’s status has changed to Administrative Leave Without Pay.

Now that criminal charges have been filed by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, Zeien will be the subject of an Indiana State Police Internal Investigation.  Depending upon the outcome of the Internal Investigation Zeien may be subject to suspension for a period of time, or termination of employment.  Prior to this ongoing allegation, Zeien had no previous allegations of misconduct in his file.

No further information related to this ongoing criminal allegation or pending Internal Investigation is available from the Indiana State Police.  Any future inquiries regarding the pending criminal matter should be directed to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.

A booking photo was not available at the time this release was published, please see the attached state police file photo.

Vanderburgh County Circuit Court Judge David Kiely sentenced 21-year-old Kaze Gathings to a total of 12 years behind bars this week, for child sex crimes dating back to 2015.

In November of 2016, detectives with the Evansville Police Department discovered Gathings was giving the victim’s father money to bring the victim to her home.

Gathings told detectives she then performed sexual acts on the victim, who was under the age of 14.

The Vanderburgh County Prosecutor’s Office would like to recognize the staff at Holly’s House for their extensive work gathering evidence and other significant materials for this case.

Evansville woman sentenced to 30 years for child exploitation charges

Vanderburgh County Circuit Court Judge David Kiely sentenced 32-year-old Kaara Broesch to 30 years in prison Monday afternoon for various crimes against children.

In January, detectives with the Evansville Police Department discovered Broesch forced a child, under the age of 14, to perform sexual acts on an adult.

Vanderburgh County Prosecutor Nick Hermann assigned the case to Deputy Prosecutor Kelly Corne, who handles the majority of cases involving sexual crimes against children.

Corne worked extensively with Detective Brian Turpin, a sex crimes investigator for the Evansville Police Department.

The Vanderburgh County Prosecutor’s Office would like to recognize the staff at Holly’s House for their extensive work gathering evidence and other significant materials for this case.
