High School teachers and counselors learn about manufacturing

Friday, June 16; times below

Background:  The Alcoa Foundation Teachers’ Manufacturing Bootcamp is taking place in the month of June with 24 area teachers and counselors from middle and senior high schools from EVSC, Gibson Southern, Mt. Carmel, Mt. Vernon, and Boonville. On June 16, the group will be at Ivy Tech Community College for a breakfast and a hands-on tour.

The schedule includes:

8:30 a.m.: Breakfast in Room 107

9 a.m.-11:15 a.m.: Hands-on Campus and Lab Tours which will include:

  • Flying drones
  • Computer Numeric Controls – creating Teachers’ Boot Camp Commemorative Coins
  • Advanced Automation and Robotics Technology – Seeing robotics in action
  • Welding – Using the welding simulator
  • Mechatronics – Vibration analysis

Manufacturing is a very important component of the economy in Indiana providing 30% of the state’s earnings. It also provides high wages for the people engaged in manufacturing with an annual average of about $70,000. However, the retirement rate for manufacturing is increasing rapidly as the skills gap for the incoming workers continues to grow. This Bootcamp is one of the efforts underway in Southwest Indiana to help combat this trend.

Contact at the event:  Jim Heck, Executive Director of Grow Southwest Indiana Workforce; and at the breakfast – Ivy Tech Chancellor Jonathan Weinzapfel

Rep. Messer Votes for Landmark Legislation to Reform VA, Improve Care for Veterans

0

Rep. Luke Messer (IN-06) voted today on landmark, bipartisan legislation to reform the Department of Veterans Affairs and improve care for veterans, after years of poor performance and scandal.

  1. 1094, the Department of Veterans Affairs Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act of 2017, streamlines the process to remove, demote or suspend any VA employee for poor performance or misconduct, while protecting employees’ due process rights and expanding protections for whistleblowers.

Messer spoke on the House Floor in support of the bill, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives today.

“The Veterans Accountability Act will hold bureaucrats accountable, make it easier to dismiss bad employees, and strengthen protections for whistleblowers. These are common sense reforms and long overdue,” Messer said in his remarks. “Our military men and women – our Hoosier heroes – fought to protect us, the least we can do is fight for them … to ensure they get quality care.”

This bipartisan legislation is Congress’ latest response to VA scandals over the past few years, including waitlists so long they’ve been attributed to veterans’ deaths, theft and wrongful prescription of opioids nationally and locally in Cincinnati, and calls to the VA suicide hotline going unanswered.

  1. 1094 has already passed the U.S. Senate and now heads to the President’s desk.

Connor Strain drafted by Los Angeles Dodgers

Strain taken in the 9th round

University of Evansville senior right-handed pitcher Connor Strain was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 9th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday afternoon.

Strain was the 280th overall pick in the draft.  The fifth-year senior recorded a 2-5 record in 2017, but put up stellar numbers.  He posted an impressive 2.62 ERA in 14 starts.  Strain fanned 68 batters in just over 68 innings of work.

“We are thrilled as a program to see Connor get drafted in the 9th round by the Dodgers,” UE head baseball coach Wes Carroll said.  “He has had a great career in an Aces uniform and he is ready for the next step.”

The 2.62 ERA accumulated by Strain in 2017 was second-best in the Missouri Valley Conference and tops among all full-time starting pitchers.  He was recognized for his efforts with a berth on the All-Conference First Team.  Over the course of his senior campaign, the Shelburn, Ind. product had a scoreless streak of 15 innings while allowing just two runs over five starts in the month of April.

“It is great to see another developed player out of our program get the chance to play at the next level,” Carroll added.  “We hope to see him up with Kyle Freeland very soon.”

State Police Employee Accused of Insurance Fraud; Investigation Submitted to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office

0

A nearly four-month long investigation alleging insurance fraud was completed by the Indiana State Police and was recently submitted to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.  The investigation has resulted in the arrest of Lucas P. Zeien, 37, of Evansville, IN.

The state police investigation began on February 13th of this year the result of an anonymous tip. The tip alleged Lucas Zeien and Kerri Zeien had divorced sometime in April of 2008 and Lucas Zeien failed to report the change of marital status and update authorized dependents for purposes of health insurance benefits.  This resulted in Lucas Zeien’s former wife and two children from a previous marriage continuing to utilize health insurance under the plan that covers Indiana State Police personnel.

As a result of this investigation, the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office charged Lucas Zeien with the crime of Insurance Fraud, a Level 6 Felony.

Lucas P. Zeien was appointed to the department as a state police officer on July 8, 2007 and was assigned patrol duties at the Evansville State Police Post until he was later assigned to serve in investigations in August of 2015.  Effective February 22, 2017, as a result of the allegation and subsequent investigation, Zeien was placed on Administrative Duties, with pay, at the Evansville State Police Post.  Since that date, Zeien’s authority to act as a law enforcement officer has been suspended.  Now, as a result of the filing of charges by the Marion County Prosecutor’s office on June 13, 2017, Zeien’s status has changed to Administrative Leave Without Pay.

Now that criminal charges have been filed by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, Zeien will be the subject of an Indiana State Police Internal Investigation.  Depending upon the outcome of the Internal Investigation Zeien may be subject to suspension for a period of time, or termination of employment.  Prior to this ongoing allegation, Zeien had no previous allegations of misconduct in his file.

No further information related to this ongoing criminal allegation or pending Internal Investigation is available from the Indiana State Police.  Any future inquiries regarding the pending criminal matter should be directed to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.

A booking photo was not available at the time this release was published, please see the attached state police file photo.

Evansville woman sentenced to 12 years for child sex crimes

0

Vanderburgh County Circuit Court Judge David Kiely sentenced 21-year-old Kaze Gathings to a total of 12 years behind bars this week, for child sex crimes dating back to 2015.

In November of 2016, detectives with the Evansville Police Department discovered Gathings was giving the victim’s father money to bring the victim to her home.

Gathings told detectives she then performed sexual acts on the victim, who was under the age of 14.

The Vanderburgh County Prosecutor’s Office would like to recognize the staff at Holly’s House for their extensive work gathering evidence and other significant materials for this case.

Evansville woman sentenced to 30 years for child exploitation charges

Vanderburgh County Circuit Court Judge David Kiely sentenced 32-year-old Kaara Broesch to 30 years in prison Monday afternoon for various crimes against children.

In January, detectives with the Evansville Police Department discovered Broesch forced a child, under the age of 14, to perform sexual acts on an adult.

Vanderburgh County Prosecutor Nick Hermann assigned the case to Deputy Prosecutor Kelly Corne, who handles the majority of cases involving sexual crimes against children.

Corne worked extensively with Detective Brian Turpin, a sex crimes investigator for the Evansville Police Department.

The Vanderburgh County Prosecutor’s Office would like to recognize the staff at Holly’s House for their extensive work gathering evidence and other significant materials for this case.
