Otters claim series over Cornbelters

The Evansville Otters bent but never broke in a 9-6 win over the Normal Cornbelters on Wednesday afternoon.

Normal (21-21) brought the game’s tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Otters closer Randy McCurry delivered his 11th save of the year to secure the win.

Evansville (23-18) surged to an early lead over the Cornbelters with seven runs in the first four innings. 

In the second inning, a three run home run from Chris Riopedre against Cornbelters starter Edgar De La Rosa put the Otters on top early.

The home run marked back-to-back games for Riopedre with a long ball and was his fourth of the season.

In the third inning, the Otters would open up their lead.

Josh Allen took advantage of a Normal throwing error to score from second base to post the first run in the side.

Riopedre then delivered on his fourth RBI of the day to push Alejandro Segovia across the plate making it 5-0.

The four RBI for Riopedre marked a season high.

The Cornbelters got a run back in the bottom of the third.

 An RBI single from Justin Fletcher scored Aaron Dudley to make it 5-1 in favor of the Otters

Evansville answered back in the top of the fourth with two more runs.

A solo shot from Josh Allen extended the Otters lead once again.

An RBI single from John Schultz scored Dane Phillips to make it 7-1. 

Normal wouldn’t go away quietly.

In the sixth inning, Normal added two runs on an RBI single from Aaron Dudley to score Craig Lepre and Yeixon Ruiz.

 Then again in the seventh inning, Normal would cut the deficit on a two RBI single from Santiago Chirino to make it 7-5.

Evansville responded with two runs in the top of the eighth inning.

Alejandro Segovia scored Allen on a sacrifice fly to left field, and Jeff Gardner followed up with an RBI on a groundout to score Phillips.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Cornbelters brought up their best hitter in Dudley with two runners on and a chance to tie the game.

Dudley did deliver a run on a groundout to make it 9-6, but that would be the last of the Cornbelters scoring. 

Felix Baez recorded his first win since May 31.

 Baez went five innings surrendering seven hit but only allowing one run.

Baez also struck out eight batters to give him a share of the Frontier League lead in strikeouts at 67 with teammate Max Duval.

The victory also marked the longest game of the season stretching almost four hours with an official time of 3:54.

Three Hoosiers Earns Spots on Team USA on Wednesday

 INDIANAPOLIS – It was a historical day at the 2017 Phillips 66 US Swimming Nationals at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis on Wednesday for the Hoosiers, as three swimmers earned spots on Team USA for the 2017 FINA World Championships next month in Budapest.

The day was highlighted by Lilly King, who won the national championship in the 200 breaststroke. In the men’s 200 freestyle, Blake Pieroni and IU postgrad also earned spots on Team USA in the 4×200 freestyle relay.

King had the best long-course meter performance of her stellar career on Wednesday, posting the second-fastest time in the world this year and crushing her school record with a time of 2:21.83. King’s mark is also the 18th-best time in the event in history, making her the 14th-fastest performer in the event all-time.

The Evansville, Ind. native has now punched her ticket to Budapest and will represent Team USA in the 200 breaststroke. King is also scheduled to swim in the 50 breaststroke, 100 breaststroke and 200 IM this week. King is the top seed in both the 50 and 100 breast entering the week.

Indiana had a great performance in the men’s 200 freestyle Championship Final, as both Pieroni and Grothe earned spots on Team USA for next month’s FINA World Championships on the 4×200 freestyle relay.

Pieroni posted a personal-best, cruising to an Indiana school record and a second-place finish with a time of 1:46.30. The rising senior’s time is the 10th-fastest in U.S. history, and also earns him an “unofficial” spot for Team USA in the 200 freestyle.

On Tuesday, Pieroni placed sixth in the 100 freestyle to earn consideration for a spot on the 4×100 free relay team.

Grothe also had a tremendous swim, touching the wall third right behind his training partner Pieroni with a mark of 1:46.39. The IU postgrad earned a spot on the 4×200 free relay team for the Americans.

Earlier in the day in prelims, Rachel Matsumura had a great swim in the 200 backstroke, tying for 22nd overall with a time of 2:14.08. Bailey Kovac was 60th in the event with a mark of 2:21.35. Kovac also swam in the 200 breaststroke, coming in 60th with a time of 2:38.86.

On the men’s side, Wilson Beckman took 27th with a time of 2:02.42, while Bob Glover was 34th in 2:03.18.

In the women’s 50 butterfly, Christine Jensen placed 28th with a time of 27.45, while Shelby Koontz was 41st with a mark of 27.86. In the 200 freestyle, Delaney Barnard was 33rd with a time of 2:02.20.

In the men’s 200 freestyle, Max Irwin was 65th with a mark of 1:53.20, while Nick Carlson touched the wall in a time of 1:55.35 to take 78th. Levi Brock was 62nd in the men’s 200 breast with a time of 2:26.39.

Competition at the 2017 Phillips 66 US Swimming Nationals continues on Thursday with the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 50 breaststroke and 50 backsroke at the IU Natatorium. Prelims begin at 9:00 a.m. ET, with finals at 6:00 p.m. ET.

 

Victims have been identified from yesterday’s fire on Hercules Ave.

Both victims have been identified from yesterday’s fire on Hercules Ave.  The victims are Sharon F. Mand and Kathleen Woolems, both residents of that address. Both died from smoke inhalation. Inquiries concerning the cause and origin of the fire and the ongoing investigation can be made to the Evansville Police and Fire Departments.

Autopsy Has Been Scheduled For Today

The Coroner’s office was called to 1717 Hercules in reference to the discovery of 2 victims from today’s fire. No identifications have been made and an autopsy has been scheduled for 13:00 hrs. 06-28-2017.

Pieroni Places Sixth in 100 Freestyle at Swimming Nationals

 INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana University’s Blake Pieroni had a great showing at the 2017 Phillips 66 US Swimming Nationals at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis on Tuesday.

The rising senior placed sixth in the A Final of the 100 freestyle, touching the wall with a school record time of 48.49. With his finish, Pieroni is now eligible to be selected for Team USA in the 4×100 relay at the 2017 FINA World Championships next month in Budapest.

Last summer, Pieroni was a member of the gold medal-winning 400 freestyle relay for Team USA at the Rio Olympics.

The Hoosiers showed off their depth in the men’s 1,500 freestyle, with five swimmers placing in the top-40. Trey Hubbuch led the way, placing 22nd with a time of 15:34.94, while Ethan Curl took 27th with a mark of 15:38.02.

Matthew Anderson was 30th overall with a time of 15:45.19, while Adam Destrampe took 37th with mark of 15:51.48. Jack Collins was 40th in 16:07.21.

In the 800 freestyle, rising sophomore Cassy Jernberg placed 25th overall with a time of 8:47.83

Earlier in the day for the IU women, Delaney Barnard placed 40th with a time of 56.33, while Shelby Koontz was 67th with a mark of 57.12. Grace Haskett was 96th in 58.01. For the men, Ian Finnerty was 40th in a time of 50.33.

In the 200 butterfly, IU alum Max Irwin placed 47th with a time of 2:04.64, while on the women’s side, Reagan Cook was 62nd with a mark of 2:19.59.

Competition at the 2017 Phillips 66 US Swimming Nationals continues on Wednesday with the 200 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 backstroke and 50 butterfly at the IU Natatorium. Prelims begin at 9:00 a.m. ET, with finals at 6:00 p.m. ET.

 

Otters and Cornbelters split Tuesday doubleheader

NORMAL, Ill.- The Evansville Otters and the Normal Cornbelters split a pair of games on Tuesday, with Normal winning 8-2 in game one, and Evansville winning 4-3 in game two.

 Evansville (21-18) took the second game behind a pair of home runs from Chris Riopedre and Lance Montano in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Normal (21-20) posted 12 hits in the first game and took advantage of two Otters errors in the win. 

The first game was delayed in the bottom of the sixth inning due to an issue with the turf on the mound.  

The field crew was forced to suspend the game until 6:30 p.m. when the teams played out the remainder of the game.

In the game one, Normal jumped out to an early lead with an RBI double from Aaron Dudley that scored Santiago Chirino.

A Nolan Meadows RBI single scored Dudley to make it 2-0. 

The Otters posted a run in the top of the third inning when Jeff Gardner hit an RBI double to score Riopedre to make it 2-1. 

Evansville tied the game in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI from Kolten Yamaguchi that scored Riopedre. 

It would be all Cornbelters from there. 

In the bottom of the fourth inning, an RBI single from Craig Lepre scored Miguel Torres to give Normal a 3-2 lead. 

Normal added on five more runs in the bottom of the fifth.

A Torres sacrifice fly scored Meadows to open up the scoring.

A two RBI double from Yeixon Ruiz scored Justin Fletcher and Diego Cedeno.  

Chirino then delivered on a two RBI single to score Lepre and Ruiz to make it 8-2.

Normal’s Charlie Gillies recorded the wins giving up just three hits. Gillies is now 3-3 on the year. 

Luc Rennie record his first loss of the season. 

Rennie gave up a season high nine hits in 4 2/3 innings of work. Rennie is 2-1 this season. 

In game two, the Otters were the first on the board in the second inning.

RBI singles from Brandon Soat and Many De Jesus scored Jeff Gardner and Riopedre respectively to make it 2-0.

The Cornbelters evened the score in the bottom of the inning. 

A Torres RBI single scored Justin Fletcher and Cedeno scored on a Lance Montano error.

In the third inning, Normal would take the lead on a solo home run from Ruiz to make it 3-2. 

However, the Otters came up with heroics in the top of the sixth inning.

Chris Riopedre sneaked a home run over the left field wall to even the score at 3-3. It was Riopedre’s third home run this year.

Two batters later, Lance Montano launched his second home run of the season to give the Otters a 4-3 lead. 

That score would hold as Randy McCurry recorded his tenth save of the year. 

Hasten Freeman recorded his first win in 2017.

Freeman went one inning of relief giving up just one hit.

Francisco Carillo recorded his first loss of the year for Normal.

Carillo gave up both home runs to the Otters in the sixth.

Jason Broussard also made his first start for Evansville this year.

Broussard went four innings giving up three hits and three runs, striking out two in the effort. 

The Otters and Cornbelters will return to action tomorrow afternoon at The Corn Crib.

First pitch is set for 1:35 p.m.
