Child Seat Inspection Clinic and Bicycle Safety Rodeo At Washington Square Mall

In partnership with the Automotive Safety Program, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office will operate a free Child Seat Inspection Clinic this Thursday from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm in support of Child Passenger Safety Week. Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office bicycle patrol will also be on hand to answer questions about bicycle safety.

Children of any age are invited to bring their bicycles to the northwest corner of the parking lot at Washington Square Mall where our bicycle deputies will set up a safety course. Children who bring a bicycle and particpate in the course will receive a free bicycle helmet courtesy of Deaconess Health System.

The child seat inspection station will operate on Thursday, September 21, 2017 betwen 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm at Washington Square Mall. Child Passenger Safety Technicians from the Sheriff’s Office will be on hand to inspect your car seat for proper installation.

Child Passenger Safety Week promotes the importance of proper child seat safety, by raising awareness through a national and statewide ad campaign. Child Passenger Safety Week is an annual event and takes place this year between September 17-23.

“Using a child seat correctly can save a child’s life. Our office is pleased to partner with the Automotive Safety Program and the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute in order to show parents how to properly install and use a child safety seat and explain when it is time to transition to a new car seat or seat belt,” said Sheriff Dave Wedding.

Indiana traffic crash data shows that in 2016, 218 children in Indiana under the age of 13 were seriously injured, and 10 children died, while unrestrained in an automobile accident. A 2015 NHTSA National Survey of the Use of Booster Seats shows 37.4 percent of children ages 4 to 7 in the United States were not being properly restrained.

Free child seat inspection stations are offered across the state and available throughout the year. The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office provides free inspections on an appointment basis. For more information, please visit our website by clicking here.

Plaza Park to Host Annual Run at the Mounds

Plaza Park International Prep Academy is hosting its eighth annual Run at the Mounds event tomorrow that serves as a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Run at the Mounds consists of nearly 660 middle school cross country runners from six different counties in southern Indiana. The event was started as a way to raise awareness about Leukemia and support research for treatments and cures. Over the past seven years, Plaza has raised nearly $50,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Admission to the event is $3 and donations are being accepted. Plaza’s goal this year is to raise $15,000 for the organization.

Men’s Tennis Garners Victories at ITA Midwest Regional

The Screaming Eagles men’s tennis team took away a combined 8-9 record in the singles competition and a 2-4 record in the doubles competition during the ITA Midwest Regional hosted by Grand Valley State University over the weekend.

In the doubles competition, junior combination Ilia Karelin (Ekaterinburg, Russia) and Andrew Dones(Georgetown, Indiana) rebounded from a first round 8-5 defeat to advance to the semifinals of the consolation bracket. Karelin and Dones had advanced through the consolation to the quarterfinals with a 9-8 victory on a 7-2 tiebreaker.

The second duo of freshman Spencer Blandford (Louisville, Kentucky) and senior Samuel Kiladejo(London, England) also finished with a 1-2 record, falling in the opening round 8-5, before taking an 8-4 decision in the consolation round and bowing out in the consolation quarterfinals, 8-5.

The singles bracket for the Eagles was led by Dones, who posted a 4-2 record during the weekend. Dones garnered four-straight victories in the consolation bracket en route to the championship match where he was defeated 6-2, 6-1.

Karelin also made waves in the Singles A consolation bracket after a first round loss. Karelin went on to win three-straight matches by scores of 6-2, 7-6 in the first match, 6-4, 6-1 in the second, and advancing to the championship game by default before eventually falling in the championship match 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), and 10-6.

The Eagles will be back on the court October 7 at the USI Tennis Courts for USI Alumni Tournament in Evansville.

USI sets record enrollment in graduate programs

This fall, the University of Southern Indiana welcomed the largest number of graduate students in the University’s 52-year history. Overall masters and doctoral program enrollment stands at 1,308 – a 22.5% increase over the previous year. USI currently offers 13 master’s programs and one doctoral program. The University began providing graduate programs in 1984.

“USI has always delivered educational excellence to our students. It’s clear there is a greater need for graduate-level education, which is now serving as a growth driver for the institution,” said Dr. Linda L. M. Bennett, president. “Seeing the advancement in these programs is a testament to the hard work of our faculty and the continued academic and professional excellence found within our offerings.”

The growth in graduate students is across many of USI’s graduate programs, including a variety of concentration areas in the accelerated MBA program, as well as full-time programs offered through all four of USI’s colleges.

“The caliber of graduate students choosing USI is impressive, and it’s clear that these students are attracted to us because of the reputation of our programs and quality of our faculty,” said Dr. Mayola Rowser, director of Graduate Studies. “As we look to meeting the future needs of students and the community, it is clear that expanding our graduate level educational offerings is integral.”

Along with the growth in graduate students, USI continues to see growth in freshmen. There are 1,722 first time in college students, a 2.2% increase from fall 2016. The average high school GPA for the incoming freshman class is 3.36 on a 4.0 scale.

Total USI enrollment is up 340 students from last academic year to 11,033 for the 2017 fall semester, which includes students in undergraduate and graduate degree programs and 2,016 students enrolled in USI’s College Achievement Program (CAP) classes in 27 high schools across Indiana. CAP has a long tradition of successfully enabling many students to graduate college in four years or less.

Students at USI represent 90 Indiana counties, 39 states and 70 countries. Out of state enrollment, including international students, makes up approximately 17% of the student population, and minority and international students comprise more than 14%.

University of Evansville Announces Coffee Hour Lecture Series for 2017-18 

The University of Evansville’s 2017-18 annual Coffee Hour Lecture series begins Thursday, October 5, with the Wahnita DeLong Reading. All lectures in the series are free and open to the public.

Elizabeth A.A. Wilson will be the speaker for the October 5 lecture, which will begin at 4:00 p.m. in the Melvin Peterson Gallery. An ordained New Thought minister who is completing her PhD in divinity, Wilson is a speaker and author of several books, including a comic fantasy novel, Ascension Denied, and, co-written with bestselling author Scott Ciencin, a mystery novel, The Humbug Murders. She wrote the narrative development for the acclaimed Nintendo fantasy game Mystic Searches and starred in The New 8 Bit Heroes, an award-winning documentary about making Mystic Searches.
