Riverside Drive Closes to Prepare for HydroFest 2017

AUGUST 29TH, 2017  BRITNEY TAYLOR EVANSVILLE, INDIANA

 Riverside Drive is closed in downtown Evansville to prepare for HydroFest this weekend. The road is closed from Court Street to Cherry Street.

Riverside Drive will reopen on Tuesday, September 5th at 9 a.m.

Evansville HydroFest will begin Friday, September 1st and runs through Sunday, September 3rd.

The race course features world class automotive powered hydroplanes on the Ohio River.

Wristbands are $10 for the three-day event and children under 12 are free.

You can buy wristbands at the Evansville Museum, SWIRCA, the Visitor’s Center, all of the six-area Schnucks stores, and all nine-area Heritage Federal Credit Union locations.

All U.S. Armed Forces Veterans will get into the event for free.

Romain Suburu USI Doggie Dash 3K and 5K

The inaugural Romain Suburu USI Doggie Dash will be held on Saturday, September 30 on the USI campus. The 3K and 5K races will allow whole families (including the four-legged children) an opportunity to walk and run on the beautiful University of Southern Indiana campus. A portion of the proceeds from the Doggie Dash will be used to offer programming and provide professional development opportunities for student clubs within USI’s Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education. Registration now open for 16th annual Norwegian Foot March

The 16th annual Norwegian Foot March will take participants 18.6 miles through the rolling hills of Evansville’s west side. Carrying a 25-pound rucksack, participants will begin and end at the University of Southern Indiana, working to make it back to the finish line in under four and a half hours. It’s an experience unlike any other, happening Saturday, November 4, 2017. Registration is currently open for the 16th annual Norwegian Foot March. ROTC cadets, Soldiers and veterans, as well as civilians, may register individually or as part of a four-member team. State Files Lawsuit to Level the Sales-Tax Playing Field Between Hoosier-Based and Out-of-State Businesses

Today at Indiana Governor Eric J. Holcomb’s request,  Attorney General Curtis Hill filed a lawsuit on behalf of Indiana’s Department of Revenue asking a court to find House Enrolled Act 1129 (Ind. Code § 6-2.5-2-1) constitutional. The new law, which became effective July 1, 2017, seeks to level the playing field between Hoosier-based businesses and those outside our state that do business here through online sales. HEA 1129 requires these out-of-state businesses to collect and remit the same sales/use taxes as Hoosier-based businesses.

The Indiana General Assembly enacted HEA 1129, and Gov. Holcomb signed it into law, with full awareness that the United States Supreme Court ruled in 1992 that out-of-state retailers need not collect and remit sales/use taxes.

“In light of the rapid evolution and capabilities of software and technology, the incredible growth of online sales in recent years and other factors, it’s time for the Supreme Court to revisit and overturn this ruling,” Gov. Holcomb said. “Hoosier-based businesses need the ability to compete on a level playing field as soon as possible.”

The legislature included, and the state’s lawsuit relies upon, a provision in HEA 1129 that allows Indiana to put into motion a legal process to challenge the 1992 Supreme Court ruling.  HEA 1129 also calls for the court(s) to act “expeditiously.”

YESTERYEAR: Hill’s Snappy Service BY Pat Sides

This small diner opened in 1941 at Main Street and Riverside Drive, not long before this photo was shot. It housed Hill’s Snappy Service restaurant, part of a popular Midwest chain that had begun to expand into Indiana cities in the 1930s. The building’s distinctive style and diminutive size contrasted starkly with the older, more traditional commercial structures surrounding it. Hill’s replaced a building that was damaged by the Great Flood of 1937, and the diner’s tiles and curves resembled the Art Deco style of the Greyhound Bus terminal at Third and Sycamore, which had opened two years earlier. Hill’s was already operating three other restaurants in Evansville when the location on Main Street opened.
