IU Alum Miller Places Fifth in 100 Breast at World Championships
BUDAPEST, Hungary – Indiana University alum Cody Miller placed fifth overall in the men’s 100 breaststroke on Monday at the 2017 FINA Swimming World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Miller, the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics bronze medalist in the event, just missed out on a podium finish on Monday, touching the wall in a time of 59.11 – 0.06 seconds behind bronze medalist Kirill Prigoda of Russia.
In the women’s 200 breaststroke, reigning gold medalist from the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics Lilly King will be the No. 2 seed for Tuesday’s championship final after touching the wall with a personal-best and IU school record time of 1:04.53.
With her time, King just missed the American record (1:04.45), became the second-fastest American and the fourth-fastest performer in the event all-time.
In the men’s 200 freestyle, IU’s Blake Pieroni, fresh off winning a gold medal with Team USA on Sunday in the 4x100m freestyle relay, placed 13th in the world in the 200 free with a time of 1:47.08.
IU alum Marwan Elkamash placed 16th overall in the event with a time of 1:47.41. Earlier in prelims, Elkamash set the Egyptian record with his mark of 1:47.40. Elkamash also set the Egyptian record in the 400 freestyle on Sunday, placing ninth with a time of 3:46.36.
Along with King in the championship final of the 100 breast on Tuesday, Miller will swim in the 50 breaststroke and IU postgrad Zane Grothe will swim in the 800 freestyle.
Prelims are scheduled to begin at 3:30 a.m. ET, with the final of the women’s 100 breast and semifinals of the men’s 50 breast and men’s 800 freestyle starting at 11:30 a.m. ET.

Reps. Bacon, Sullivan Respond To INSPECT Announcement At Deaconess
Below are statements from State Reps. Ron Bacon (R-Chandler) and Holli Sullivan (R-Evansville) on the integration of the INSPECT program at Deaconess Gateway Hospital.
“I am glad to see Deaconess upgrading to the INSPECT system to more easily keep track of the health and wellness of its patients,†said State Rep. Ron Bacon (R-Chandler). “This year, I sponsored a new law expanding access and compliance with the use of INSPECT and allowing for more helpful information to be included on INSPECT reports. Doctors need to know what prescriptions their patients are taking and the dosage in real time in order to properly treat them. INSPECT will provide physicians with this information to help keep Hoosiers healthy while also tracking prescription drug intake.â€
“The INSPECT program will give doctors data to help them provide the best care possible for their patients by monitoring their opioid prescriptions,†said State Rep. Evansville, IN – The Old National Events Plaza has ranked in Pollstar’s Mid-Year Worldwide Top 200 Theaters list for the first half of 2017
Pollstar, the concert tour industry’s primary trade publication, ranked the Old National Events Plaza No. 186, based on ticket sales, in its 2017 mid-year report. The report showed the Old National Events Plaza sold 17,289 tickets through the first half of the year.
The achievement marks its highest ranking to date among theaters, one of only three Indiana facilities to achieve the honor which include Fort Wayne’s Embassy Theatre and Wabash’s Honeywell Center.
“We are excited to be included in Pollstar’s rankings and to see our venue listed alongside some of the best theaters on the planet. It is a testament to the progress and growth we are experiencing here in Evansville and Vanderburgh County, and Old National Events Plaza is thrilled to be a part of the expanding opportunities in culture and entertainment for our community,†said Alexis Berggren, General Manger of the Old National Events Plaza.

Air quality forecasts for Evansville and Vanderburgh County are provided as a public service. They are best estimates of predicted pollution levels that can be used as a guide so people can modify their activities and reduce their exposure to air quality conditions that may affect their health. The forecasts are routinely made available at least a day in advance, and are posted by 10:30 AM Evansville time on Monday (for Tuesday through Thursday) and Thursday (for Friday through Monday). When atmospheric conditions are uncertain or favor pollution levels above the National Ambient Air Quality Standards, forecasts are made on a daily basis.

Ozone Alerts are issued by the Evansville EPA when maximum ozone readings averaged over a period of eight hours are forecasted to reach 71 parts per billion (ppb), or unhealthy for sensitive groups on the USEPAAir Quality Index scale.
Particulate Alerts are issued by the Evansville EPA when PM2.5 readings averaged over the period of midnight to midnight are forecasted to reach 35 micrograms per meter cubed (µg/m3).

A man whose handgun was confiscated after police believed it was stolen will soon have the gun returned to his family. The Indiana Court of Appeals found Friday the man proved his mother was the rightful owner of the firearm.
After officers were dispatched to investigate a reported break-in at a commercial building in June 2016, Jonathan Kent Roy was seen through a window sitting on an air mattress and tending to a cut on his leg. Roy then picked up and hid a handgun. When an officer knocked on the door, Roy grabbed the gun, ran to another part of the building, then returned to his previous location.
The officers entered the building and took Roy into custody, then found a revolver in a backpack. A search of the information listed on the gun showed a handgun with the same serial number was reported stolen in Texas in 1991.
The state subsequently charged Roy with Level 5 felony burglary, Level 6 felony theft of a firearm and Class A misdemeanor carrying a handgun without a license. Roy agreed to plead guilty to criminal trespass and carrying a handgun without a license, both Class A misdemeanors, and the Vanderburgh Circuit Court imposed a sentence of time served.
Roy then filed a petition for return of property, seeking the return of the handgun to his mother, whom he claimed was the rightful owner of the gun and had loaned it to him. Roy went on to say the gun had belonged to his late father since the 1980s, but the court concluded his mother was not the rightful owner and, thus, denied his petition.
On appeal in Jonathan Kent Roy v. State of Indiana, 82A01-1701-CR-204, Roy argued the court’s decision should be reversed because it was unsupported by the evidence. The Indiana Court of Appeals agreed, with Senior Judge Carr Darden noting that deputy Joshua Patterson testified that he had been unable to confirm the gun found in Roy’s possession was the gun that had been reported in Texas. Additionally, testimony was presented that two different guns were associated with the same serial number, Darden said.
“By contrast, Roy’s mother identified and testified unequivocally that Roy’s father had owned the handgun in question before their marriage in 1985,†Darden wrote. “Further, police records show that law enforcement, pursuant to a search warrant, temporarily confiscated the handgun from Roy’s father in 2000 and later returned it to him in 2001.â€
The appellate court remanded the case for further proceedings.

New Harmony Theatre closes 2017 season with Souvenir
New Harmony Theatre will finish its 30th season with Souvenir by Stephen Temperley. Â The play runs July 28-30 and August 4-6 at the Murphy Auditorium in historic New Harmony, Indiana. The 16th annual Norwegian Foot March will take participants 18.6 miles through the rolling hills of Evansville’s west side. Carrying a 25-pound rucksack, participants will begin and end at the University of Southern Indiana, working to make it back to the finish line in under four and a half hours. It’s an experience unlike any other, happening Saturday, November 4, 2017. Registration is currently open for the 16th annual Norwegian Foot March.
