Aces Volleyball Garners AVCA Team Academic Award

UE finished 2016-17 academic year with 3.337 GPA

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Evansville was one of eight Missouri Valley Conference volleyball teams were honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as recipients of the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2016-17 season, part of a record-breaking 822 programs to earn this distinction.

As a team, the Purple Aces completed the 2016-17 academic year with a 3.337 GPA.

“Congratulations to the players, staff and academic support people that work behind the scenes to help our student-athletes achieve their academic goals and exceed expectations,” UE head coach Manolo Concepcion said.

“It is great to see that our team culture of embracing diversity and inclusion translates to excellence not just in the athletic side, but to the classroom as well,” Concepcion added.  “It demonstrates that regardless of race, language, country of origin, students are able to succeed at Evansville if all-in effort is put day in and day out.”

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

The AVCA Team Academic Award, celebrating its 25th year, is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients have increased every single year but two, while amassing a 532 team increase over the span of the last decade. Since the award’s inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current number of 822.

Anna Hargis Resigns from Evansville City Council

(July 25, 2017)
 Anna Hargis.
City Councilwoman Anna Hargis submitted notice of her resignation this morning to Vanderburgh County Republican Chairman Wayne Parke. Her final day serving on the City Council will be Friday, August 11, 2017.
Hargis, who is serving her first term representing Ward 3 on the Evansville City Council, has accepted a position as a Financial Advisor at Merrill Lynch.
“This was a difficult decision as I’ve been honored to serve the city. I regret that my professional career will no longer allow me to be part of the council, but this was the best decision for my family. While my elected public service will soon come to an end, I look forward to remaining engaged with our community. I am hopeful my successor will be positive, curious, and have the best interest of our city at heart,” says Hargis.
GOP  Chairman Parke praised Hargis, saying, “Anna has represented Ward 3 admirably while serving on the City Council. She has been a strong advocate for her constituents and for the City of Evansville.  I have no doubt that her energy and enthusiasm will be missed.  I understand why she resigned, but I hate to see her go. I wish her well in her new position .”

World Record and World Championship for IU’s King

0

BUDAPEST, Hungary – Indiana University’s Lilly King continued her dominance in the 100 breaststroke on Tuesday at the 2017 FINA Swimming World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

King set the world record in the 100m breaststroke, winning the world championship with a time of 1:04.13. The junior’s mark was 0.22 seconds better than the previous world record of 1:04.35 set by Lithuania’s Ruta Meilutyte in 2013.

The reigning Olympic champion in the event started with a blistering first 50 meters, clocking in with a 29.80 – the fourth-fastest 50 breast in history. The Evansville, Ind. native then finished the back-half of the race in impressive fashion, finishing with a 34.33, which was the fastest split in the championship final.

With her tremendous time, King also broke the four-year old American record (1:04.45) and the Indiana school record mark in the event.

Indiana alum Cody Miller placed 16th overall in the men’s 50 breaststroke, touching the wall in a time of 27.46 in the semifinals. Earlier in prelims, Miller posted a mark of 27.31.

In the men’s 800 freestyle, IU postgrad Zane Grothe earned a spot in Wednesday’s championship final, qualifying eighth overall with a time of 7:50.97.

Along with Grothe in the championship final of the 800 free on Wednesday, IU’s Mohamed Samy will swim in the prelims of the 100 freestyle. Both King, Miller and Blake Pieroni are also eligible to swim for Team USA in the 4×100 freestyle mixed relay as well, but those relays won’t be announced until later.

Prelims are scheduled to begin at 3:30 a.m. ET, with the finals session on Wednesday starting at 11:30 a.m. ET.

0

The EVSC Board of School Trustees approved the appointment of Michael Powless as Central High School athletic director, Andre Thomas as Harrison High School athletic director and Tom Bealmear as Bosse High School athletic director.

Michael Powless, who most recently served as the physical education teacher at Lodge, replaces Andrew Owen who was named district athletic director. Powless has a B.S degree from Indiana State University – Evansville and a M.S.E. degree from Indiana State University. He has extensive coaching experience at Thompkins Middle School and Central High School. At Central, he served as assistant boy’s basketball coach, head girl’s basketball coach, freshmen basketball coach, varsity track coach, and head boys’ track coach. He also served as assistant athletic director during his tenure at Central.

Andre Thomas was most recently a physical education and health teacher at North High School. Thomas replaces Bryan Spear as athletic director at Harrison. Thomas has a B.S. degree from the University of Southern Indiana. He has served as the head basketball coach and assistant athletic director at North since 2015. He also served as head football coach and head girls’ basketball coach at Bosse.

Tom Bealmear, formerly a physical education and health teacher at Harrison High School, replaces Larry Cochren as the athletic director at Bosse High School. Bealmear has a B.S. degree from the University of Southern Indiana at a M.S. degree from Indiana Wesleyan University. During his time at Harrison, Bealmear has served as assistant boy’s basketball coach, head girls’ soccer coach and head girls’ basketball coach.

“We are really excited to see where these three take athletics in their respective schools,” said Andrew Owen, who will assume his responsibilities as district athletic director following Central High School’s football season. “They all have extensive coaching experience and love what they do. I know they will build upon the great foundations already in place at our high schools.”

IS IT TRUE JULY 25, 2017

19

IS IT TRUE that Congressman Larry Bucshon held a town hall meeting  at the Tech High School on Lynch Road and an angry group of constituents showed up to give him a piece of their minds?…from the Republican repeal and replace effort to pollutants in the Tri-State, the progressive crowd laid the wood to Congressman Bucshon continuously?…some of their points were well taken and exhibited a level of frustration in the American people that seems to boil over regularly these days?…that one point made by the organized resistance about pollutants was misinterpreted by the Congressman when he blamed the high pollution levels on the topography of Southern Indiana?…topography does not generate any pollutants as some people thought Congressman Bucshon meant, but it does work together with gravity to direct heavier than air particles like Ozone into the lower elevations?…Southwest Indiana does indeed have some of the most polluted air in the country and yes our rolling hills makes sure the pollutants find their way into the lower elevations such as in the Ohio River flood plain?…in spite of the organized shaming party Congressman Bucshon was a good sport?…the funniest comment of the post event period was calling the town hall and “out of town” hall because it was located outside of the traditional boundary of the City of Evansville?

IS IT TRUE the General Manager of the Hilton DoubleTree convention hotel is resigning from that position at the end of August? …we wonder if the Hilton Doubletree General Manager’s early departure  could be a signal that all is not well at this $21 million dollar taxpayers subsidized downtown Hotel?

IS IT TRUE during the last several days someone has been posting on the internet that Ellis Park will be closing for good at the end of July, 2017?  …this information is totally incorrect and has been classified as a “Fake News” posting?  …that Ellis Park owner Ron Geary experienced “Fake News” posts  when his Evansville IceMen played at the Ford Center? …that the “Fake News” postings about Ellis Park closing for good have been turned over to area law enforcement officials? …that Ellis Park is having its best year in its 95 year history?

IS IT TRUE there are a few colleges in the United States that are entertaining getting rid of the basic requirement to pass one class of college algebra to get a degree?…some are even claiming that requiring algebra is racist?…algebra is typically taught in the 8th or 9th grade and is one of those foundational classes that teaches students how to analyze trends and solve for unknowns?…to put a collegiate stamp of approval on someone who can’t pass a basic algebra class is tantamount to malpractice in public education?…simple algebra such as “if you make $2,000 per month and your rent is $700 per month, how much do you have left for transportation, food, utilities and recreation” is as basic as it gets to prepare a young person for a productive and prosperous life?…being a racist would constitute denying a young person of color the right to be taught to analyze problems in a cognizant manner because some foolish administrator decided to waive the requirement?…doing this would blunt the impact that one could have in life’s ladder of success?

IS IT TRUE that MIT Economist Peter Tomlin has published a book claiming that the United States has degenerated into a third world country of crumbling infrastructure and failing schools?…Tomlin claims that 20% of the population are now educated and able to handle life in an exemplary manner while the other 80% are drowning in debt and struggling to survive?…we would like to know what Dr. Tomlin thinks about exempting college graduates from getting a passing grade in 8th grade algebra?…such a school is a factory for creating people who struggle with life that did so to spare the poor kids the effort to learn basic thought processes?

IS IT TRUE that Evansville and the Tri-State have just endured the hottest three day stretch since 2012?…when you add in the humidity the last several days have been just plain old miserable?…for those who still have a newspaper delivered to the driveway, they most likely broke a sweat just going out to pick up the paper at 7 am?…it is time to do a rain dance to break the heat streak and hopefully recover before the dog days of August come along and do it again?
