Ellis Park Trainer Spotlight: J.R. Caldwell Off To Fast Start

‘Why would you not come to Kentucky? Good horses, good racing. If you want to better yourself, you’ve got to be where the better horses are.’
HENDERSON, Ky. (Saturday, July 8, 2017) — Among the new outfits racing regularly at Ellis Park this summer is trainer J.R. Caldwell, who got out to a quick start with two wins, a second and third with his first eight runners.
This is Caldwell’s first full year in Kentucky, though he had horses for Churchill Downs’ spring meet a couple of years ago and ran a few horses at Ellis Park before moving back to his Southwest circuit.
“We couldn’t weather the storm for the whole year, so we had to ship out,” said Caldwell. As to why he returned, “Why would you not come to Kentucky? Good horses, good racing. If you want to better yourself, you’ve got to be where the better horses are. We’ll be as active at Ellis as I can get them in (the races). I committed to coming to Kentucky; I’m going to run as much as I can in Kentucky.”
Caldwell’s Kentucky string will remain stabled at Churchill Downs. It’s overseen by assistant trainer Kylie Wanger, who comes from a family of trainers in the Southwest, including her great-grandfather, grandfather and mom.
“It’s started well,” Wanger said of the Ellis meet. “They ran big. We had a couple we expected to be there that didn’t. But new track, the way the pace plays out, the way everything runs, just have to kind of adjust. Go from there and just keep getting ready to fire. It seems to me that speed will hold on the dirt track, so we have to kind of readjust our closers for them to fit in there. We’ll just try to sort it out like we did here” at Churchill Downs.
Caldwell grew up in Idaho, his dad training horses on the side. Caldwell went into the profession full-time, training in California early in his career, then taking a break before jumping back into the sport in 2008.
“And we’ve been on a pretty good roll since then,” he said. “It’s been a steady wave. We’ve had some ups and downs. Every year it seems like everything has just come together and gotten a little better. The little hiccups have been not too bad.”
Caldwell’s breakthrough horse was Texas Chrome, who last year won the Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby and Super Derby, propelling the stable to its first $2 million year. Though Texas Chrome left the barn when owner Danny Keene opted for a private trainer, Caldwell’s horses still have earned $1.35 million so far this year and won 60 races, his fourth straight season to win at least 60.
The trainer retains a division based seasonally at Delta Downs, Lone Star Park and Remington Park. Most of his Kentucky horses came from his Oaklawn Park winter operation, which produced 15 winners to finish eighth in the standings.
At Churchill Downs, Caldwell won 13 of 37 starts, with six seconds and four thirds — his 35 percent victory rate easily the best among the top 20 outfits.
“We brought the best horses we had, spotted them to where we thought we could win,” he said. “When we got here, we had about 17 head and thought we’d win 17 races at Churchill, thought we could spot every one of them in a race they could win. Then Mr. Keene pulled out and we got down to eight horses at one time. So to come on with 13 wins, we’re very happy with the way we’ve done. I moved some horses from Texas to help us fill the barn us, and I’ve been very active at the claiming box.”
Caldwell had never been to Ellis until he ran at the track for the first time on his brief foray into Kentucky a couple of years ago.
“We enjoyed it,” he said. “We just ran a few there, and it was good. We’re going to come loaded and more prepared to have a better run in Kentucky. Our focus is to build our Kentucky business and go from Kentucky to Oaklawn. We’re really trying to make a point that we’re here to stay and we’re really trying to win races.”

Otters sweep Slammers, head into All-Star break

The Evansville Otters swept Saturday’s doubleheader against the Joliet Slammers, earning a series sweep heading into the All-Star Break.

Evansville beat Joliet 2-0 in game one before winning 3-1 in the series finale.

In game one, starting pitching for both teams threw three scoreless innings to begin the game.

The Otters offense broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning with two solo home runs.

Josh Allen led off the inning with a home run to give the Otters a 1-0 lead and it was his sixth home run of the season.

Two batters later, Alejandro Segovia left the ballpark with his ninth home run of the season, extending the Evansville advantage to 2-0.

With the lead, Evansville held the Slammer offense in check.

Left-hander Hunter Ackerman went 5 2/3 scoreless innings with five strikeouts in his return to the active roster as he improved to 5-2.

Kyano Cummings closed out the seventh for the save.

Joliet starter Luis Cruz took the loss, pitching all six innings and allowing two runs.

In game two, the Slammers took an early lead in the first as Chaz Meadows scored on a wild pitch from Evansville’s Luc Rennie.

The Otters tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second off an RBI ground out from Brandon Soat, scoring Christopher Riopedre.

Riopedre gave the Otters a 2-1 lead in the fourth with an RBI triple that scored Ryan Long.

Evansville added an insurance run in the sixth as Nick Walker scored off a defensive error by Joliet, making the score 3-1.

Rennie settled in following the first inning, earning his third win of the season as he allowed one run in five innings with five strikeouts.

Shane Weedman also pitched two scoreless innings for the Otters in the doubleheader sweep, pitching an inning in both games.

Cummings finished game two with his second save on the day, striking out the side in the seventh. Cummings now has four saves this season.

The Evansville Otters will look forward to the All-Star break during the coming week as seven Otters players will head to Joliet, Ill. for the Frontier League All-Star Game.

Evansville resumes the season next Friday, beginning a road series at the Gateway Grizzlies.

The Otters will return home to Bosse Field on July 21 against the Washington Wild Things at 6:35 p.m for Indianapolis Colts Night and postgame fireworks.

Inveniam Viam Rallied Through The Stretch To Take $50,000 Ellis Park Turf Race

HENDERSON, Ky. (Saturday, July 8, 2017) — Chester Thomas, last year’s winningest owner at Ellis Park, won his first race of the young season at his hometown track in fine fashion as Inveniam Viam rallied through the stretch to take the $50,000 Ellis Park Turf by a half-length over front-running Corby.
The 5-year-old Inveniam Viam now has won all four races since being claimed for $20,000 out of a race for Louisiana-born horses Jan. 20 at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans. The mare captured allowances races against open company at the Fair Grounds and Churchill Downs before earning her first stakes victory. She’s now 9-5-3 in 24 starts, earning $247,959 with the $30,070 purse.
Thomas, who is from nearby Madisonville, Ky., had a third with the first five starters this meet for his Allied Racing Stable.
“Are you kidding me? It’s awesome,” he said. “First stakes of the meet, and to win this race here, it’s our second stakes as an owner. So it’s really good. Hopefully we have better things coming.”
 He said Inveniam Viam is “by far” the best horse he ever plucked out of a claiming race.
“Got to give credit to Brad Cox,” he said. “He picked the horse out; he’s trained the horse. Really improved the horse. Brad is having a great year. Yeah, how do you do any better than this? Yeah, nice claim. Kudos to Brad Cox.
“We’re excited to be here,” he said of Ellis Park, adding of track owner and president Ron Geary, “I was telling Ron last weekend, we’re running all of our horses here, as we did last year. It’s good to get the monkey off. We hadn’t won one yet – and this was the right one to win. Manny did a great job riding. Had my heart pumping a little bit, but he got her home when it counted.”
By the way, Inveniam Viam is Latin for “I’ll find a way or make one.”
Inveniam Viam settled into sixth in the field of eight fillies and mares, fanning eight wide into the stretch before swooping up to reel in Corby on the final strides. The daughter of the Louisiana stallion Half Ours covered 1 1/16 miles on firm turf in 1:41.35, paying $7.20 to win. Corby and jockey Jon Court held off the Jose Lopez-ridden La Piba by three-quarters of a length, with co-favored Burma Road a neck back in fourth while edging Rattataptap and Crook Stick as only 2 1/4 lengths separated the winner from the sixth-place finisher.
“Everything set up,” Court said. “We looked like the speed of the race, unless somebody went crazy. I knew Manny Cruz was well-mounted.”
Cruz is back riding in Kentucky and the Midwest for the first time in five years. He was riding first-call at Churchill Downs for trainer Kenny McPeek, but returned to Florida to be home for his young sons. Recovering from injuries incurred in a spill at Tampa Bay Downs, he thought Indiana Grand would be a good place to get his career rekindled, with easy access to Kentucky.
“I had two young boys who needed me, but now they’re raised,” Cruz said. “They said, ‘Daddy, you can get outta here again. Go to Kentucky.’
“… Brad Cox rode me in Indiana and we did well. And now my opportunities are starting to pick up a little more with him. I’m getting back. The race today, it helped me that the horses I had to follow ran a little bit close. I’m riding a good horse, who gave me all the choice to handle the position I wanted. When I wanted a little bit more, she gave it to me, and a little bit more at the quarter pole. She responded in the last eighth like a mature horse and helped me to get this job done.”
Gabriel Saez had a big day, winning three races: the second with Restless Ramble ($2.40), fourth with Frozen Hannah ($10.20) and ninth on More Than Kisses ($8.00).
