August TCB Tuesdays
Boomers sweep season series against Evansville
The Evansville Otters could not solve Schaumburg Sunday as the Boomers beat the Otters 9-3 in front of 2,226 at Bosse Field to complete a season sweep of Evansville.
The Schaumburg offense picked up where it left off from Saturday’s win, scoring three runs in the first inning.
Sean Godfrey hit a two-run RBI single to left to give the Boomers a 2-0 advantage and a passed ball allowed the Schaumburg lead to grow to 3-0.
Evansville answered with two runs in the bottom half as Jeff Gardner’s RBI single scored Josh Allen and John Schultz’s RBI ground out brought Dane Phillips home, making the score 3-2.
An RBI ground out by Andrew Brodbeck made it a 4-2 Boomers lead in the second.
The Otters made it a one-run game again in the third as Brandon Soat delivered an RBI single, scoring Schultz.
From there, the Boomers gradually pulled away.
Capitalizing with a small-ball approach, Brodbeck recorded a second RBI in the fourth with a fielder’s choice to give Schaumburg a 5-3 advantage.
In the fifth, Schaumburg took advantage of a defensive miscue by the Otters.
Godfrey and Ryan O’Malley reached base with back-to-back singles before a Phillips’ throwing error allowed both runners to score, increasing the Schaumburg lead to 7-3.
The Boomers added two more runs in the seventh.
Luc Rennie was handed the loss in the series finale after surrendering seven runs-four earned-in five innings. He allowed five hits and six walks while striking out five.
Michael Wood earned the win in relief for the Boomers. He allowed two walks and a hit in four innings out of the bullpen.
Starting Tuesday, Evansville begins a six-game road trip with a three-game series against the Normal Cornbelters. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. from The Corn Crib in Normal, Ill.
Fans can listen live to all road games on 91.5 FM WUEV. Lucas Corley (play-by-play) will provide coverage.
Evansville returns home to Bosse Field on Aug. 8 to open a series against the Florence Freedom, the first game of a six-game homestand.
Tickets for August home games are still available by going to evansvilleotters.com or calling 812-435-8686.
Man Arrested after Intentionally Striking his Friend with a Vehicle
- On Saturday, July 29, 2017 at approximately 1:23 PM, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff Office responded to the area of Shoshoni Lane and Cherokee Drive to investigate a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
Deputies arrived on scene and learned from witnesses that a man had been struck by a dark colored passenger car. The suspect vehicle reportedly fled the scene after the crash. A relative had already rushed the victim to the hospital prior to the deputies arrival.
Deputies later spoke to the victim, who explained he had been riding with an acquaintance, Mr. Nicholas Patrick Heard, when they began arguing. The victim allegedly grabbed Mr. Heard’s keys, exited the vehicle and began walking away. The victim recalled hearing a car engine rev and then remembered flying through the air after being struck by Mr. Heard’s vehicle. The victim sustained abrasions, cuts and a possible concussion.
Deputies began searching for Mr. Heard and located his grey 2017 Chrysler 200 sedan at his residence on Meridian Avenue. The front windshield was broken and the vehicle showed signs of an impact. Mr. Heard was ordered outside the residence and surrendered without incident.
Mr. Heard is lodged at the Vanderburgh County Jail on charges of Battery with a Deadly Weapon as well as several outstanding bench warrants.
ARRESTED:
Nicholas Patrick Heard (pictured above), 37, of Evansville. Battery with a Deadly Weapon as a Level 5 Felony.
Presumption of Innocence Notice: The fact that a person has been arrested or charged with a crime is merely an accusation. The defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.

IS IT TRUE JULY 31, 2017
IS IT TRUE that the latest dream of professional sport in Evansville is that maybe, just maybe a professional soccer team would draw enough fans to make an impact?…around 60 soccer enthusiasts recently gathered to watch a big game at RiRa’s and someone hatched the idea of an Evansville based pro soccer franchise?…if the group grows to around 600 enthusiasts it may be the start of something good?
IS IT TRUE Los Angeles in a region of 20 million people does support professional soccer to the tune of 25,000 fans per game?…greater Evansville has about 1% of the population of LA so if enthusiasm for soccer scales, we can expect far less than 25,000 soccer enthusiasts to attend a game in Evansville?…that is not enough to start dreaming of borrowing money to build a downtown stadium?…it is enough to form a club that is not paid to play and hope to develop a following before investing any taxpayer dollars in soccer?
IS IT TRUE that there have been plenty of different semi pro and even pro sports franchises in Evansville?…the most recent examples of attempt at being a sports centric metro took a back seat when the Evansville Icemen contract was not renewed? Â …then followed the Evansville Thunderbolts that is seemly is slipping on the ice at the $127 million downtown hockey rink?
IS IT TRUE the Evansville Icemen flirted with success when they were a playoff contender, but the reality is that the unreasonable costs of renting the ice sheet couldn’t be sustained even with 5,000 hockey fans showing up for games? …that the fiscal conservatives vultures are now circling the lowly Evansville Thunderdolts after their first embattled money losing year? Â …it is rumored that the Evansville Thunderbolts may have lost around $750,000 plus in the 2016-17 season which the Evansville taxpayers are expected to pick up the tab?
IS IT TRUE that an indoor and a outdoor football has failed twice due to excessive expenses?…the indoor Evansville Bluecats were a respectable team that failed due to financial problems?…the outdoor football Evansville Vipers were championship contenders but couldn’t draw a paying crowd?
IS IT TRUE that Evansville has lost a couple of third tier basketball teams because of economic reasons?…the biggest blow to local sports came when the AAA affiliate Evansville Triplets folded?.
IS IT TRUE the Otters continue to provide very good sports entertainment but are dependent on the generosity of the ownership to sustain themselves?
IS IT TRUE soccer is an international sport and the Evansville area has enjoyed some very good high school teams and even some state championships?… it would cost very little to start a semi pro soccer team, but we had better knock those “we gotta build a new soccer stadium” smiles off the faces of the elected officials before they jam another wasteful taxpayer financed dream team down the people’s throat? …it just might be time for area soccer enthusiasts to start discussing this idea in earnest?
IS IT TRUE one of our staff member told us he had a monster bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich at the Eastside ShowMe’s Restaurant? …if you’re looking for a jumbo bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich you need to visit the Eastside ShowMe’s Restaurant? Â …this affordable sandwich is served with eight (8) slices of bacon?
Todays “READERS POLL” question is: Do you feel that a semi pro soccer team could be successful in this area?
