The University of Evansville men’s soccer team battled, but was unable to overcome an early goal as the Aces fell to Butler, 1-0, on Tuesday evening in Indianapolis, Indiana.
“The guys never stopped competing.  We gave everything we had until the final whistle,” said Aces head coach Marshall Ray. “It is difficult to put yourself in a hole early and have to dig out against a very good team like Butler.”
The lone goal of the match came just 12 minutes in as Butler connected a string of passes leaving Joey Harvey alone in the box in a one-on-one situation. Harvey dribbled and finished to give Butler the 1-0 advantage.
Following a bit of a slow start in the opening 15 minutes, the Aces found their rhythm midway through the first half. Evansville recorded its first shot in the 29th minute and proceeded to fire four more with a pair on-goal.
In the second half, the intensity continued for the Aces as UE came close to equalizing on three separate occasions in the final six minutes of the match. With just 18 seconds remaining, senior midfielder Ian McGrath sprinted into the box for what would be the Aces’ final chance. McGrath unleashed a shot that sent Butler goalkeeper Eric Dick sprawling to the ground to make a sve, preserving the 1-0 win for the Bulldogs.
Butler out-shot the Aces, 19-10, with an 8-4 advantage on shots on-goal.
McGrath led the way for the Aces with four shots, two on-goal, while freshman forward Sam Bonano took a pair of shots with one on-goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Frederik Reimer helped preserve the deficit at just a goal, making six saves between the posts.
“I thought we created some chances late in the match and had a lot of energy and effort to get numbers forward,” said Ray on the Aces’ late-match push. “We now turn our focus to Sunday and prepare ourselves for the coming matches.
The Aces return to Arad McCutchan Stadium on Sunday for a 2 p.m. meeting with Eastern Illinois.

Several Tri-State Universities are getting good grades from the U.S. News and World Report’s annual Best Colleges Rankings.
The University of Evansville is ranked the third best value college in the Midwest. Kentucky Wesleyan is ranked 3rd best value college in the South.
Also from the area Butler is ranked 2nd and Valparaiso 4th as Best Regional Universities in the Midwest. Murray State is 32nd and Western Kentucky is 33rd in the same category in the South.

Members of the Evansville Bar Association are volunteering their time on Friday, September 15, 2017, to assist The Arc of Evansville for the fourth annual “Annual Day of Service.â€Â The EBA’s Day of Service coincides with service projects sponsored by bar associations throughout the State of Indiana.  The Evansville Bar Association volunteers will assemble at the Arc at 8:30 a.m. and will begin scraping and painting parts of the Arc headquarters on Virginia Street.
Chair of the 2017 EBA Day of Service Project, Joe Langerak of the law firm of Jackson Kelly, explained the reason the Bar Association selected the Arc: “The Arc of Evansville advocates for those who often cannot advocate for themselves. In addition, it helps those with disabilities achieve their full potential. The Arc also helps those with disabilities find meaningful employment. These folks are often a forgotten or ignored cross section of the community, especially those with severe disabilities. The EBA is pleased to assist the Arc as it does this good work in our community.â€

Men’s golf earns top ten finish at MSU
UE ties for 9th placeÂ
 In the final round of the Murray State Invitational, the Purple Aces men’s golf team shot a team score of 301, coming home in a tie for 9th place at Miller Memorial Golf Course.
Tyler Gray finished at the top of the University of Evansville squad. Gray carded a 77 on Tuesday, finishing with a 215 over the three rounds of play. He tied for 18th.
Matthew Ladd, Noah Reese and Cameron Weyer each finished final round with scores of 75. Ladd led the trio, earning a tie for 25th place with a 218. Reese was behind him, notching a 3-round final of 225 to tie for 51st.
Jessie Brumley hit a 76 on Tuesday, coming in one behind Reese in the final standings with a 226. Weyer’s final day tally saw him tie for 70th place with a final of 230.
Gabe Rohleder and Robert Waggoner competed as individuals. Rohleder totaled 77 strokes in Tuesday’s round, tying for 44th with a 223. Waggoner had the low score of the day for the Aces, posting a 74 on his way to a total of 229.
Murray State took top team honors, defeating UT Martin by six strokes. The Racers’ total of the three rounds of play finished at 850 while the Skyhawks checked in six shots behind. Western Illinois and Morehead State tied for third place with finals of 859.
Evansville’s total finished at 882. That was good for a 9th-place tie with Green Bay.
Hunter Richardson of UTM was the medalist. His score on Tuesday finished at an even 71 with his total at 203 as he won by four shots over Avery Edwards of Murray State.
It is a quick turnaround for UE as they play on Saturday and Sunday at the Raising Canes Intercollegiate in Richmond, Ky.
