Volleyball heads to SIU and Missouri State
This weekend, the University of Evansville volleyball team continues it Missouri Valley Conference schedule as the Purple Aces head to Southern Illinois and Missouri State.
UE takes on the Salukis on Friday evening at 7 p.m. on The Valley on ESPN3 before traveling to Springfield, Mo. on Saturday for another 7 p.m. contest.
Conference play began last weekend for the Purple Aces as they fell to Indiana State on the road in five sets on Friday before dropping a 3-0 decision to Illinois State on Monday at Meeks Family Fieldhouse.
In the match-up at Indiana State last week, freshman Allana McInnis set her career mark with 54 assists at Indiana State. It was the most for a Purple Aces player since Jelena Merseli registered 62 against Bradley last year. The effort surpassed her previous high of 48 set against Chicago State in the season opener. McInnis ranks 7th in the MVC with 8.04 assists per set.
Freshmen Cassie Brooks and Allana McInnis have made a huge difference this season for the Purple Aces. Brooks ranks in the top ten in the league with 4.13 digs per set while McInnis is 7th in the conference in assists. Brooks has helped Evansville improve its dig total from 12.73/set last season to 15.82 in 2017. McInnis has done the same in the assist category. In 2016, the Aces posted 9.09 per set with this year’s total checking in at 10.52.
Cathy Schreiber has been the definition of efficiency this season, hitting .279. That tally puts her 10th in the MVC. Her season total of .290 is the highest for an Evansville player since 2013 when Rachel TenHoor hit .321 over the course of 29 matches. Schreiber is coming off of a great effort at Indiana State as she hit .429 with 19 kills in 35 tries with just four errors. Schreiber is second on the team with 2.41 kills per set. Her total of 19 at ISU was the most in her career.
Weekend play opens on Friday evening at Southern Illinois. The Salukis stand at 3-11 overall, but picked up a pair of conference wins last weekend over Bradley and Valparaiso with a loss coming against Illinois State. Andrea Estrada and Maggie Nedoma lead SIU with 2.37 and 2.33 kills per game, respectively.
Saturday’s match will feature a trip to Springfield, Mo. to take on Missouri State. The Bears are currently 11-5 overall and got off to a perfect 3-0 start in league action last weekend, defeating Illinois State, Bradley and Loyola. Lily Johnson paces the Bear offense with an average of 4.17 kills. MSU is also the top hitting team in the league, entering the weekend at a league-best .241.

| The Indiana Supreme Court will travel to southern Indiana on Monday, October 30. The Court will hold oral argument in Evansville in a juvenile delinquency case. The argument is in the case of B.A v. State of Indiana (49S02-1709-JV-567). Case materials can be foundonline.
The Court holds about 70 oral arguments at the State House in Indianapolis each year. Occasionally, it schedules arguments outside the capital to allow students, press, and public in other areas of the state an opportunity to see the work of the Court. This argument will take place in Carter Hall on the campus of the University of Southern Indiana, 8600 University Boulevard, Evansville, Indiana 47112 at 10:30 a.m. CDT. The 40-minute argument will be broadcast live and is open to schools, the public, and press. Educators interested in bringing student groups should contact Outreach Coordinator, Sarah Kidwell at sarah.kidwell@courts.in.gov. Press interested in attending must also contact Sarah Kidwell by October 23 at noon to learn decorum order rules. The argument will be webcast live by the University of Southern Indiana and uploaded to the Court’s website in coming weeks. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Those interested in attending will be required to enter through the south doors of University Center West and go through security on the second floor. The West Side Nut Club Fall Festival starts next Monday! As always, the Evansville Police Department will play a crucial role in keeping the event safe and fun. Please keep these things in mind before you head out to West Franklin St. Pay special to attention to the new information for the Saturday parade.
Items You Cannot Bring To The Fall Festival:
1. Animals/Pets of any type – service animals are allowed
2. Glass Bottles/Jars/Containers
3. Squirt Guns of any type/Water Balloons
4. Bicycles/Scooters/Skateboards/Roller-Blades
5. No Drones. It is against FAA regulations to fly drones over a crowd of people

For The Parade On Saturday:
• No one can set anything up on the median on Franklin St. until after the Friday night street cleaning (approximately 11:00 pm). Anything set up before this time will be removed and thrown in the trash.
• There will be walkways created in the medians . You may not block these walkways.
• Nothing permanent can be set up in the medians
o No walls, poles with tape or string etc. The only thing allowed will be chairs and blankets. This will be enforced by the WSNC and the Evansville Police Department. There will be no exceptions!!!
There will be a crossing point at 10th and Franklin during the parade. Make sure you obey the West Side Nut Club Volunteers at this location. This is for you safety and the safety of those participating in the parade
Life Chain Is Sunday, October 1
On Sunday afternoon, October 1, at 1:30 p.m., Right to Life of Southwest Indiana will host the annual Life Chain. Life Chain is a silent prayer vigil to protect life and oppose abortion. The Life Chain supporters will gather at Brinker’s Jewelers parking lot at the corner of Green River and the Lloyd Expressway for free refreshments and to pick up signs beginning at 1:30 p.m. The silent prayer vigil is from 2-3 p.m. All those who support Life are invited to stand on Green River Road sidewalks beginning at the Lloyd Expressway and going south to Lincoln Avenue. Pastor Mike Ballard of the Potter’s Wheel will offer prayer and Brad Fleming will provide music. Jan Herron is the chairperson for the 2017 Life Chain.
This is the 30th year of public witness on behalf of rejected Preborn Children; and Life Chain will fill the sidewalks in over 1,500 cities and towns in the U.S. and Canada. It is an opportunity for people to unite in prayer and to stand up for the rights of the unborn. They will stand in honor of the more than 60 million children whose lives have been lost to abortion in our country since 1973. Every year young moms report choosing life for their unborn children over abortion after reading the signs and seeing the people praying at the Life Chain.
According to Mary Ellen Van Dyke, Executive Director of Right to Life of Southwest Indiana, “Supporters of unborn babies and their moms will stand together respectfully and prayerfully to honor the sanctity of life. This year with all the attacks against the sanctity of human life, conscience and religious freedom and the federal funding for abortions in Obamacare, many prayers are needed.â€

Whitehouse is being recognized for his work training others on how to fight fires, and for being an all around asset to the EFD.
Fire Chief Mike Connelly officially presented the award, and Whitehouse says he never expects to be recognized for his work.
Rick Whitehouse said “You know, this is a job you don’t get a lot of thanks for. And anythingyou do get you have to appreciate it because you don’t get a lot of thanks.â€
Officials first announced that Whitehouse would be getting the award late last week at a conference in Indianapolis.
EFD was also recognized at that conference with the Leadership in Fitness Excellence (L.I.F.E.) Award. In 2014, EFD was awarded the L.I.F.E. Award.
