HATFIELD PART OF NATIONAL STUDY OF POTENTIAL LEGISLATIVE RESPONSES TO DATA BREACHES

0

INDIANAPOLIS – State Rep. Ryan Hatfield (D-Evansville) has been selected to serve on a national commission designed to encourage uniformity in laws across the country, with an initial assignment of examining potential responses to the problems created by breaches in personal data.

Hatfield recently was appointed to the Uniform Law Commission (ULC), and has been additionally selected to the group’s new Study Committee on Data Breach Notification.

The ULC, established in 1892, is designed to provide states with non-partisan legislation that attempts to bring clarity and stability to critical areas of state statutory law. To serve on the commission, a member must be qualified to practice law. The more than 300 law commissioners include legislators, judges, and law professors.

“The value of an organization such as this is to try and find a common response to many of the problems that face our states,” Hatfield said.

“In that light, you can certainly say that finding ways to answer the rising tide of personal data breaches that are taking place across this country is something that demands a unified approach toward a common solution,” he continued. “These breaches are affecting millions of Americans, and it would seem to make sense that we should work together to find ways that protect us all from identity thieves.”

Rep. Messer Echoes Netanyahu’s Call for an End to Iran Nuclear Deal

4

U.S. Rep. Luke Messer (IN-06) joined Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in urging the Trump Administration to either drastically change President Obama’s Iran nuclear deal or exit the deal altogether.

Reached in 2015 during the Obama administration, the Iran nuclear deal lifted critical economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for promises to reduce the regime’s development of nuclear weapons.

“The Iran nuclear deal was a giant mistake. It has been bad for our national security, bad for Israel’s national security and bad for the world,” Messer said. “More than a year after the deal, Iran is still working toward a nuclear bomb and is building missile factories to prop up Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. These are unacceptable threats that should have been anticipated when the deal was first made. I join Prime Minister Netanyahu in urging the Trump Administration to either make major changes to the deal or abandon it altogether.”

Netanyahu has been an outspoken critic of the deal, saying last week, “Our position is straightforward. This is a bad deal. Either fix it — or cancel it. This is Israel’s position.”

A longtime champion of pro-Israel policy, Messer met with Prime Minister Netanyahu in Israel in 2013, and met with Israeli Ambassador Ron Dermer in Washington in July.

“Hoosiers are united in their support for the Jewish state,” Messer said. “President Obama’s defection from Israel and deal-making with its enemies was unconscionable. With a new President in the White House, we have the opportunity to undo damage made during the Obama years and stand strong with our longtime friend and critical ally, Israel. Rescinding the Iran nuclear deal or substantially changing it is an important first step.”

Every three months, President Trump is required to inform Congress whether or not Iran is in compliance with the agreement’s ban on the development of nuclear weapons. The next deadline is Oct. 15.

Earlier this month, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said that President Trump would have grounds to stand on should he choose to not certify Iran’s end of the deal.

USI health informatics initiatives showcased in upcoming events

0

The University of Southern Indiana’s initiatives to help advance health through the best use of information technology (IT) will be showcased at three upcoming events this fall.

“Targeting the Quadruple Aim: Experience, Quality, Satisfaction and Cost Reduction” is the theme of the fourth annual Health Informatics Tri-State Summit (HITS), planned for Thursday, October 12 in the University Center at the University of Southern Indiana.

Dr. Gabriela Mustata Wilson, associate professor of Health Informatics and chair of USI’s new Health Informatics and Information Management program, said the day-long HITS conference was moved from January to October to accommodate the growing number of health professionals and students interested in the event.

This year’s conference keynote presenters include:

  • Matt Jones, a cancer survivor who is passionate about enhancing the patient experience in health care. He holds a BA in communication, MLS in liberal studies with an emphasis in organizational leadership, and is pursuing his doctorate in organizational leadership.
  • Ross Martin, medical doctor and program director for Research and Transformation at CRISP, the regional health information exchange serving Maryland, the District of Columbia, West Virginia and the surrounding region. As an accomplished vocalist, musician and writer, Dr. Martin also is president and founder of The American College of Medical Informatimusicology.

Mustata Wilson said as in previous years, HITS will focus on patient-centered care, cutting edge health information and the innovative solutions needed to take healthcare delivery to the next level. HITS will be relevant to physicians, nurses, pharmacists, informaticists, health information technologists, medical practice managers, healthcare managers, health professionals, students and others whose scope of practice is related to health informatics.

For the fourth year in a row, USI students will be conducting health assessments using fully digitized technology during the annual USI Wellness Fair for students and employees, which will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, September 27, in Carter Hall. Mustata Wilson said the students will have the opportunity to conduct and collect information first hand and understand how the collected information relates to their coursework and real life work situations.

Participation in the Wellness Fair will kick-off the College of Nursing and Health Professions’ participation in National Health IT Week, which will be observed October 2-6, 2017. This is a nationwide awareness week focused on the value of health IT. Each year, NHIT Week partners educate industry and policy stakeholders on the value of health IT for the U.S. health care system.

The University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team starts its 2017 home schedule at Strassweg Field when it hosts the University of Indianapolis Friday for a 5 p.m. match. The USI-UIndy match-up is the start of a two-match homestand for the Screaming Eagles.

The Eagles (3-2-1, 1-1-1 GLVC) finish the first homestand of the season Sunday at noon when they welcome the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

Coverage of the USI-Bellarmine match-up, including live stats and video, is available on GoUSIEagles.com.

Week 4 Eagle Notes:

Eagles complete longest road trip: USI completed the longest road trip in the history of the program with a 3-2-1 overall record and 1-1-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

USI ties ranked Bellarmine in double-overtime: The Eagles broke a six-match losing streak to ranked opponents with a double-overtime tie with eight-ranked Bellarmine University, 0-0, last weekend. USI’s last win over a ranked opponent was versus Truman State University in 2013.
