U. S. Post Office and Customs House by Pat Sides

1

One of the oldest buildings in downtown Evansville is the former U. S. Post Office and Customs House on NW Second Street. Completed in 1879 at a cost of $200,000, this striking example of Ruskinian Gothic architecture endures as a city landmark. Over the decades, it has housed the U. S. Post Office, a Federal Court and Customs House, the U. S. Weather Bureau, and other federal offices.

This photograph was recorded during the initial construction of the building which began about 1873.  Vacated by the federal government in 1969, the building, now known as Old Post Office Place, has since housed a variety of shops, offices, and restaurants.

After holding out many of its top runners last weekend, the University of Southern Indiana cross country teams return to action Saturday for a Conference Crossover meet hosted by Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois.

The women’s 6k starts at 10 a.m. with the men’s 8k to follow at 10:45 a.m.

The USI women’s team enters the meet ranked eighth by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, the same spot it held last week. Last year, USI was third of 13 teams. Junior Hope Jones (Cumberland, Indiana) is the top returning finisher from the event after placing 19th a year ago.

Other ranked teams from the region include Grand Valley State University (1), Hillsdale College (5), Walsh University (10), Cedarville University (17), and Malone University (22). USI remains third in the region behind GVSU and Hillsdale.

On the men’s side, USI remained sixth in this week’s USTFCCCA poll. USI finished second of 14 teams in the crossover a year ago, with senior Bastian Grau (Höchstadt, Germany) the top returning finisher after placing eighth last year.

Ranked men’s teams from the Midwest Region include GVSU (3), Lewis University (11), Bellarmine University (15), and Malone (25). USI remains second regionally to GVSU.
