McCormick, Eagles take down Truman State

University of Southern Indiana freshman forward Taylor McCormick (Rapid City, South Dakota) netted a pair of goals to lead the Screaming Eagles to a 2-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference women’s soccer victory over visiting Truman State University Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field.

McCormick’s first goal came in the 37th minute as her rebound on a shot by sophomore Lauren Willis (Cynthiana, Indiana) found the back of the net to tie the score at 1-1. Willis was credited with her first assist of the year on the play.

After playing the Bulldogs to a 1-1 draw throughout the first 70 minutes of the game, USI took the 2-1 lead when McCormick put the ball in the back of the net off her own rebound. McCormick, who scored her third goal of the year and second of the game unassisted, used a feed from freshman forward Ashley Hayes (St. Charles, Illinois) to fire off her first shot, which ricocheted off of Truman State goalkeeper Katie Mattingly and back to the foot of McCormick.

USI (5-3-4, 3-2-4 GLVC), which lost to the Bulldogs (4-4-4, 4-3-3 GLVC) in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament a year ago, fell into a 1-0 deficit early in the match as Truman State’s Laura Ney scored on a corner kick in the 22nd minute.

Despite the goal, USI dominated the flow of the contest as the Eagles outshot the Bulldogs 18-7 and held an 8-2 edge in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Emily Hopkins (Greenfield, Indiana) earned the win between the posts for the Eagles after recording three saves on the day.
