Medical-Legal Partnership Launched In Northwest Indiana

Indiana Legal Services is partnering with a Valparaiso-based health care provider to launch a first-of-its-kind medical-legal partnership program in northwest Indiana.
ILS is working with HealthLinc to provide no-cost, civil legal aid to patients who need legal assistance for matters related to their health. This medical-legal partnership is funded by grants from the Indiana Bar Foundation and Legacy Foundation.
“The medical-legal partnership, a relatively new healthcare service, has proven to have a major impact on the health of patients throughout the nation,†said Beth Wrobel, HealthLinc CEO. “Many health-harming factors have their roots in legal problems and create barriers to our patient’s ability to live healthy, productive lives.â€
ILS will provide training to medical staff in all seven of HealthLinc’s clinics on how to identify needs that qualify for civil legal aid. These needs include insurance and benefits claims, substandard housing and criminal record expungement.
Eligible patients will work with attorney Emma Douglas to get their issues resolved at no cost. In addition, qualifying patients will also receive annual screenings for potential health-harming issues in their lives that may reveal a need for civil legal assistance.
“Community health centers are a vital way for our attorneys to connect with eligible clients in communities across our state,†said Jon Laramore, executive director of ILS. “We are excited to partner with HealthLinc to connect those who typically can’t afford an attorney with the resources to address legal needs that also impact their health.â€
 Indiana Legal Services already has partnerships with several health care providers including Eskenazi Health, Indiana University Health, and Community Health Network. Its partnership with Eskenazi’s Midtown Community Mental Health Clinic was named one of 2015’s outstanding medical-legal partnerships by the National Center for Medical-Legal Partnership.
Four Hoosiers Earn Weekly Swimming & Diving Big Ten Honors
Four members of the Indiana University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams earned weekly Big Ten honors on Wednesday, the conference office announced.
Lilly King was named co-Women’s Swimmer of the Week, while Jessica Parratto was named co-Diver of the Week. Grace Haskett was named the women’s Freshman of the Week.
On the men’s side, Blake Pieroni was named co-Men’s Swimmer of the Week. Pieroni was also namedCollegeSwimming.com’s DI National Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday.
The Valparaiso, Ind. native won all six events he was in this past weekend, helping the Hoosiers upend No. 2 Texas and No. 4 Florida and vault to the top of the CSCAA/TYR Top 25. Pieroni won the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle twice, posting the fastest times in the nation in both events. He also helped IU win the 400 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay with best-times in the country.
King won three individual events and two relays this past weekend, helping IU take down No. 18 Florida. The Evansville, Ind. product won the 100 breaststroke with the top time in the nation and also helped the 200 medley relay win with the best time in the country. King also touched first in the 200 breast, 200 IM and the 400 medley relay.
In the diving well, Parratto got her season off to a great start, winning the 1-meter dive with a score of 302.85 and placing second in the 3-meter with a total of 332.85. In the first meet of the season, the redshirt junior already earned her NCAA Zones qualifying score in both events.
Haskett had a great debut for the Hoosiers, helping IU win three relays this past weekend, while also posting strong showings in the 50 freestyle. Haskett helped Indiana win the 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay, with the 200 medley relay touching with the best time in the nation. The Bedford, Ind. native also placed second and tied for third in the 50 freestyle, posting strong times of 23.07 and 23.56.Â
The No. 1/7-ranked Indiana Hoosiers men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will be back in the pool on Friday, Oct. 27 when the team faces No. 15/12 Tennessee and No. –/15 Kentucky in a double-dual meet in Knoxville, Tenn.

IU Men’s Swimming & Diving Ranked No. 1, Women No. 7 in CSCAA Poll
The Indiana University men’s swimming and diving team is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the first College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA)/TYR Top 25 Swimming & Diving Poll released on Wednesday. The Hoosier women’s team is ranked in a tie for seventh in the country.
“It is an honor to be ranked No. 1,†IU head swimming coach Ray Looze said. “The last competition against Florida and Texas was extremely high-level against two of the very best teams in the country. We will do our very best to live up to this elite level status. I was very pleased to see our women move up to seventh after our quality win over Florida. In particular, our sprint relays were exceptional.”
The Hoosier men jumped five spots from the preseason poll after getting the 2017-18 season off to a tremendous start this past weekend, sweeping a two-day, double-dual meet with No. 2 Texas and No. 4 Florida in Gainesville, Fla.
The Longhorns are the three-time defending NCAA Champions, while Florida placed third last year at the NCAA’s for the second-straight year.
This marks the second-straight season that Indiana has moved to No.1 in the nation after sweeping Texas and Florida. Last year, Indiana went on to post an undefeated dual-meet record of 11-0. The Hoosier men have won 15-straight dual meets dating back to the 2015-16 season.
The IU women also started the year off well, sweeping No. 18 Florida in two meets, but falling to No. 3 Texas to move up three spots from the preseason rankings. For the meet, the two IU squads totaled 19 individual wins and an impressive seven relay victories.

Fake invoice sent by scammers impersonating Office of Attorney General
Starting around 12:30 p.m. today, Office of Attorney General staff members began receiving dozens of calls from people nationwide asking about an invoice emailed to them that appeared to come from the Office of Attorney General.
In awkward wording, the email stated: “Kindly find the enclosed invoice and advice ASAP. Thank you.â€
The email contained the name of an individual who works for a state contractor followed by an address and phone numbers corresponding to the Office of Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.
These invoices are not legitimate and should not be paid nor answered in any manner by those receiving them.
Further, those receiving these fake invoices are asked to file a complaint with the Consumer Protection Division in order to document this scam. Complaints may be filed here. Or call 1-800-382-5516.
Individuals should remember never to click on links in suspicious emails. Clicking on links can result in computer viruses and other harmful malware.
