IS IT TRUE AUGUST 29, 2017

0

IS IT TRUE that the word in the street is that a close associate of Rick Davis is thinking about running for the chairmanship of the local Democrat party? … if elected to this position, Zachary Heronemus must have a strong Executive Committee to help him rebuild what is considered as a “crumbled mess” of a party? … that Zachary Heronemus saw first hand the Democrat Leadership back a Republican for Mayor instead of Mayoral candidate Rick Davis.  …we hear this Mr. Heronemus has many friends from all the factions within the local Democratic party? … If he can finds someone to help him raise big money for the party, he might just pull this off?

IS IT TRUE at yesterdays FOP National Conference held in Nashville Tennessee delegates were told because many hurricane “Harvey” people stayed behind are now being rescued by Houston police department? … officer’s from the Houston Police Department have not eaten a warm meal in over 24 hours? …that members of our local FOP are attempting to send food trucks to help the Houston Police Department to help take care of the officers basic needs because they have been overwhelmed with rescue efforts? …that $10,000s dollars was raised on the FOP National Convention conference floor yesterday in order to help with the relief efforts for members of the Houston Police Department and surrounding agencies?

IS IT TRUE that members of the local FOP Lodge are starting a fund raising campaign to help members of the Houston Police Department to help take care of the officers basic needs? …if you would like to help please bring food and rescues supplies to the Evansville FOP Lodge, 801 Court Street, Evansville, Ind?  …any cash donations can also be taken to FOP at 801 Court street?

IS IT TRUE we would like to thank members of the Evansville Police Department who are spearheading the effort of gathering items to donate to the Houston Police Officers who are helping the victims of the hurricane? … we want to thank FOP President, Chuck Knoll, Officers-John Montgomery, Lenny Reed, Sergent Mark Saltzman, Ryan Winters and Paul Jacobs for spearheading this relief effort? … members of the EPD will head to Houston this weekend to hand out the collections to the Police Officers of the Houston area?.

IS IT TRUE that Hurricane Harvey came ashore in Texas and dumped an incredibly large amount of rain on the Gulf Coast?…as much as 50 inches of rain fell in some places and in the megalopolis of Houston there are another 18 inches is expected in the next few days?…it is a good thing that Evansville is not on the Gulf Coast because that much rain would overload decrepit combined sewer system that has been under EPA mandate for a billion dollar upgrade would really turn havoc loose on the population?…all things considered, the low number of fatalities and missing people is testament to living in a developed place?…it could have been worse, but this storm is estimated to have caused $40B in damage? …the “First Responders” in the Houston area are doing one hell of a job in protecting the masses?

IS IT TRUE that Evansville is about to have its first hydroplane races since 2009?…the upcoming hydrofest is still charging only $10 each for a wrist band that is good for the entire weekend?…the cost to produce this event excluding any pay for volunteer workers is on the order of $400,000?…that means there is a need for about 40,000 people to buy the wristbands to assure that this event has a chance at being sustainable?…the City County Observer hopes to see the Hydrofest succeed and become an Evansville tradition so get out there and buy a ticket?

State Files Lawsuit to Level the Sales-Tax Playing Field Between Hoosier-Based and Out-of-State Businesses

0

Today at Indiana Governor Eric J. Holcomb’s request,  Attorney General Curtis Hill filed a lawsuit on behalf of Indiana’s Department of Revenue asking a court to find House Enrolled Act 1129 (Ind. Code § 6-2.5-2-1) constitutional. The new law, which became effective July 1, 2017, seeks to level the playing field between Hoosier-based businesses and those outside our state that do business here through online sales. HEA 1129 requires these out-of-state businesses to collect and remit the same sales/use taxes as Hoosier-based businesses.

The Indiana General Assembly enacted HEA 1129, and Gov. Holcomb signed it into law, with full awareness that the United States Supreme Court ruled in 1992 that out-of-state retailers need not collect and remit sales/use taxes.

“In light of the rapid evolution and capabilities of software and technology, the incredible growth of online sales in recent years and other factors, it’s time for the Supreme Court to revisit and overturn this ruling,” Gov. Holcomb said. “Hoosier-based businesses need the ability to compete on a level playing field as soon as possible.”

The legislature included, and the state’s lawsuit relies upon, a provision in HEA 1129 that allows Indiana to put into motion a legal process to challenge the 1992 Supreme Court ruling.  HEA 1129 also calls for the court(s) to act “expeditiously.”

The full lawsuit is attached.

Presentation Insight:

Startups are the lifeblood of our economy – creating change, jobs, new products, dreams, and disruption.
The entrepreneurs behind these startups put their blood, sweat and tears into the venture to bring their ideas to life.  But, unfortunately, half of all startups fail in the first four years of existence.
One way to protect yourself from becoming such a statistic is to make sure you take the proper steps to comply with the law in setting up your business.  Another way is to timely file for protection of your valuable intellectual property (cover your assets).
This presentation is designed for entrepreneurs who are looking to start a company as well as those in the process of building one.  Come see exactly what you need to do to get your business up and running and protect your valuable intellectual property rights.
Feel free to bring your lunch!

YESTERYEAR: Hill’s Snappy Service BY Pat Sides

0

This small diner opened in 1941 at Main Street and Riverside Drive, not long before this photo was shot. It housed Hill’s Snappy Service restaurant, part of a popular Midwest chain that had begun to expand into Indiana cities in the 1930s. The building’s distinctive style and diminutive size contrasted starkly with the older, more traditional commercial structures surrounding it. Hill’s replaced a building that was damaged by the Great Flood of 1937, and the diner’s tiles and curves resembled the Art Deco style of the Greyhound Bus terminal at Third and Sycamore, which had opened two years earlier. Hill’s was already operating three other restaurants in Evansville when the location on Main Street opened.
