IS IT TRUE NOVEMBER 29, 2017

8

We hope that todays “IS IT TRUE” will provoke “honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way”?

IS IT TRUE that the Evansville city employees hospitalization fund has being insufficiently funded over several years? …the city’s hospitalization fund, from which city employee medical claims are paid, could have a negative balance of  several millions of dollars at the end of this year?  …we can’t wait to read the “question costs” comments concerning this issue in the soon to be published Indiana State Board Of Accounts Audit review?
IS IT TRUE that the City of Evansville has allowed the EPA to pussyfoot around with the lead contamination issue in the Jacobsville area for 18 years? …the real tragedy is that lead poisoning can be treated, but any damage caused by contaminated lead cannot be reversed?
IS IT TRUE the Evansville/Vanderburgh County Convention and Visitors Bureau funds from the Innkeepers Tax which is paid by people when they stay at our local hotels? …this fund generates many millions of dollars a year?  …these funds are easy pickings for the fun and games crowd because the people of Evansville don’t even think about what  could be done with this money? …we are told that Convention and Visitors Bureau board didn’t donate any money towards the funding of Trolley of Evansville Districts campaign? …that Convention and Visitors Bureau board did not allow members of the Franklin Street Events Association or GAGE to present there funding request to their board?…Its time that members of our local media start paying closer attention to the financial activities of  the Convention and Visitors Bureau board?
IS IT TRUE yesterday Republican Vernon Stevens  announced that he will run for the District 2 Vanderburgh County Commission seat?  … Mr. Stevens said “he will focus on making things more affordable for county residents”?  …Vernon Stevens public service in Evansville and Vanderburgh County spans nearly 30 years with involvement in several community clubs, festivals, and the Chamber? …the other announced candidate for the District 2 County Commission seat is well known businessman Steve Hammer?
IS IT TRUE the City County Observer is somewhat distressed over the number of shootings and beatings that are happening in Evansville that are being reported?…nary a day goes by that some poor soul gets shot in either the South Side or downtown  Jacobsville?  …our local first responders are doing one heck of a job in chasing down the bad people that are responsible for these criminal acts?
IS IT TRUE that the latest dream of professional sport in Evansville is that maybe, just maybe a professional soccer team would draw enough fans to make an impact?…last year around 60 soccer enthusiasts gathered to watch a big game at RiRa’s and someone hatched the idea of an Evansville based pro soccer franchise?…if the group grows to around 600 enthusiasts it may be the start of something good?
IS IT TRUE soccer is an international sport and the Evansville area has enjoyed some very good high school teams and even several state championships?… it would cost very little to start a semi pro soccer team, but we had better knock those “we gotta build a new soccer stadium” smiles off the faces of the elected officials before they jam another wasteful taxpayer financed dream team down the people’s throat? …it just might be time for area soccer enthusiasts to start discussing this idea in earnest?
IS IT TRUE that an indoor and a outdoor football has failed twice due to excessive expenses?…the indoor Evansville Bluecats were a respectable team that failed due to financial problems?…the outdoor football Evansville Vipers were championship contenders but couldn’t draw a paying crowd?
IS IT TRUE that there have been plenty of different semi pro and even pro sports franchises in Evansville?…the most recent examples of attempt at being a sports centric metro took a back seat when the Evansville Icemen contract was not renewed?  …then followed the Evansville Thunderbolts that is seemly is slipping on the ice at the $127 million downtown hockey rink?
IS IT TRUE the Evansville Otters Otters continue to provide very good sports entertainment but are dependent on the generosity of the sponsors to sustain themselves?

Todays “READERS POLL” question is: Do you feel that a semi pro soccer team could be successful in this area?

Vanderburgh County Make Plans For Jail Overcrowding

0

In 2017 the state found Vanderburgh County Jail overcrowded, lacking space, beds, and facilities for inmates. The classification system requires 20% vacant beds in the jail.

Because of the large amount of inmates, the jail does not have enough staff to support the capacity.

A 2015 analysis reveals an increase of 35 confinement officers are required for a total of 119 for the current 512 bed facility. It also reveals a need for five more supervisors.

The total cost of one new confinement officer for the Vanderburgh County jail is $58, 816. This number includes salary, estimated overtime and shift differential, clothing, FICA & PERF, Teamsters, and health insurance. For supervisors, that figure is $66, 509.

For 35 new confinement officers, and five new supervisors to staff the overcrowded jail and stay in regulation with the D.O.C regulations, the total cost is $2,391,105.

County Commissioner Bruce Ungethiem says the Vanderburgh County Council, County Commission, and the County Sheriff will work with the prosecutors, and judges office to fix the problem.

Together county leaders will come up with a plan to add to the current facility, or build a new jail.

The official plan is due May 26th, 2018.

Governor gives stores 60 days to pull marijuana-derived oil

0

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb is directing state excise police to resume checking stores for marijuana-derived oils after the state’s attorney general declared them illegal with one limited exception.

Holcomb said in a statement Tuesday that excise police will “perform normal, periodic regulatory spot checks” of cannabidiol, or CBD, products. He says those checks will focus on products that contain THC, the psychoactive chemical in marijuana.

The Indianapolis Star reported stores have 60 days to pull the products from their shelves.

The recent opinion from Attorney General Curtis Hill states that substances containing CBD are illegal to possess, make and sell in Indiana under state and federal law. The opinion said the exception is CBD products that can be used by people with epilepsy who are on a new state registry.

Grant awarded to St. Vincent “Healthy Harvest” program to fight food insecurity in Evansville

0

Welborn Baptist Foundation, Inc. gives two-year Healthy Eating Active Living grant to St. Vincent Evansville

The Welborn Baptist Foundation, Inc. has given the HEAL (Healthy Eating Active Living) Grant of $125,024 to St. Vincent Evansville. The grant will support the St. Vincent Healthy Harvest program, a new initiative to help bring healthy food to those who need it in the Evansville community.

The grant supported the purchase of a greenhouse and hydroponic system that will allow for year-round growth of fruits and vegetables. This infrastructure will be located at Seton Harvest, a community-supported agriculture initiative sponsored by the Daughters of Charity Province of St. Louise. The produce grown will be distributed by the Seton Harvest delivery truck, local food pantries, homeless shelters, school backpack programs, and various other outlets.

“Evidence has shown that obesity and other chronic health conditions are more prominent in communities that are located in food deserts,” said Janet Raisor, Executive Director/Foundation Operations, St. Vincent Evansville.” This grant from the Welborn Baptist Foundation will allow us to help educate, fight hunger and improve the health of more families in our community.”

The Healthy Harvest program will be in partnership with several local organizations including Seton Harvest, St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, and Ozanam Homeless Shelter, as well as several local schools including Sharon Elementary and Cedar Hall.

This program will serve adults and children in the greater Evansville area, including the Evansville designated Promise Zone, and will meet the Promise Zone goal of promoting better health and access to healthcare, specifically access to affordable fresh fruits and vegetables. Produce will be distributed on a weekly or biweekly basis, depending on the type of produce.

Supplemental education and health screenings will be provided by a St. Vincent Evansville Community Health Registered Dietitian and RN. The dietitian will create recipe cards to accompany fresh produce and provide hands on education about healthy eating at field trips for participating schools to Seton Harvest. These field trips will also provide children with fun, interactive information on gardening and farming. Additionally, the RN will provide much needed health screenings at the distribution sites.

Event to benefit Arc of Evansville Child Life Center

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville women’s basketball team will hold the Teddy Bear Toss on December 10 when the Purple Aces host Morehead State at 7 p.m. in Meeks Family Fieldhouse.

Benefiting the Arc of Evansville Child Life Center, fans are encouraged to bring a new and unused teddy bear or stuffed animal to toss during halftime of the contest. Each stuffed animal will be given to a child at the Child Life Center. The fan who tosses their teddy bear closest to center court will win a Purple Aces prize pack including vouchers to a future basketball game.

Fans who bring a teddy bear or stuffed animal to the game will receive $3 tickets to the game for everyone in their party.

The Child Life Center (CLC) provides high-quality programs in an inclusive environment for children ages six weeks to six years, both with and without disabilities, by nurturing their social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth. The state-licensed facility is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and rated Level 4 on the Paths to Quality program. Last year, 59% of the children who exited the CLC and entered kindergarten reduced or eliminated their need for special education services
