USI partnership to educate Panamanian students in STEM fields
The National Secretariat of Science and Technology of Panama (SENACYT) has approved the University of Southern Indiana as a recipient of its Institute for the Formation and Use of Human Resources (IFARHU-SENACYT) public schools scholarship program.
“With this agreement, USI becomes one of only two public universities in the United States hosting this program,†said Heidi Gregori-Gahan, assistant provost for International Programs at USI. “We expect the first cohort of degree-seeking students from Panama to begin our Intensive English Program as early as March.â€
The University hosted a site visit from a Panamanian delegation this summer as a final step in securing the agreement. SENACYT is an autonomous government institution that promotes science, research and innovation for sustainable development, inclusion and competitiveness.
“Strengthening scientific capabilities in Panama is crucial to achieve these goals, and human capital is key for developing such capabilities,†SENACYT said in a statement about the new partnership. “For this reason, SENACYT has numerous initiatives to promote education in STEM areas and our IFARHU-SENACYT scholarship program is one of them. With our scholarships, we would like to ensure a robust base of human capital with a high level of education, trained in the best universities in the world. We are sure USI will give a warm welcome to our Panamanian scholars and that are students will seize the opportunity they have received to be part of the USI community.â€
Recipients of the scholarships are chosen based on merit and excellence, and go through an external evaluation process in which two evaluators review each application and interview candidates.
Since 2005, SENACYT has supported around 2,000 scholars in different areas of study and in various parts of the world. In 2012, it started a special scholarship program aimed at students from public schools, with the goal of giving them the opportunity to study abroad. The program includes a year of language training, courses to reinforce math, physics and chemistry, and academic support and follow up. The successful program is one of the reasons SENACYT is interested in diversifying the program and expanding its reach to new universities like USI.

Man Arrested for Stealing Copper Wire from Power Poles
The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office has arrested an Evansville man for stealing copper wiring from utility poles.
On Tuesday, November 07, 2017 at approximately 7:50 AM a detective with the Evansville Police Department observed a man stealing wire from a utility pole near Mohr Road and Kuebler Road. The detective confronted the man, who then fled in his vehicle. Responding sheriff’s deputies caught up to the suspect and conducted a traffic stop near N. Saint Joseph Avenue and Orchard Road.
The deputy observed cutting tools and a bucket of copper wire within the vehicle. The suspect, who was identified as Michael W. Scott Jr., had a suspended drivers license and false license plates on the vehicle. An inventory of the vehicle prior to towing revealed approximately ten pounds of copper wire.
The Sheriff’s Office located ten utility poles in the area of the 7100 block of Wright Drive with freshly cut copper grounding wires. Each pole had approximately six feet of wiring missing. Vectren later confirmed the wiring found in Scott’s vehicle was the same wiring missing from the damaged poles. Vectren estimated it would cost $2500 to repair the damage to the poles (compared to the value of the stolen copper which was only $36.33).
Mr. Scott was lodged at the Vanderburgh County Jail with a $2,200 bond.
ARRESTED:
Michael W. Scott Jr. (pictured above), 44, of Evansville. Theft as a Class A Misdemeanor, Criminal Mischief as a Class A Misdemeanor, Criminal Mischief as a Class B Misdemeanor, Operating without Vehicle Insurance as a Class C Misdemeanor, Driving while License Suspended as a Class A Misdemeanor
IS IT TRUE NOVEMBER 8, 2017
IS IT TRUE that Evansville, Indiana had another bizarre weekend when it comes to gun violence which wasn’t much of a problem 30 years ago but seems to have risen to epidemic proportion in recent years?…there were two shootings very near downtown Evansville in the 700 block of Monroe on Thursday night to get the weekend going?…then to keep the Devil’s Night spirit going a Jimtown bicycle rider shot a random person in the same area where a double shooting occurred last week?…we are not sure if the bicycle riding shooter was on the new $18M bike path or not but Jimtown is still Jimtown in spite of a large amount of taxpayer dollars being sunk into amenities more appreciated by the martini on the roof crowd of beautiful people?…finally to top it all off a pizza delivery guy was making a delivery in the 1300 block of Marshall Avenue not far from the Benjamin Bosse High School when someone pulled a gun on him and demanded all of his money?…the robber reportedly made off with a whopping $13 and hasn’t been seen since?…it is highly likely that this epidemic of gun violence in Evansville is related to the record drug overdoses that we are experiencing in 2017?
