Aces welcome Valparaiso and Loyola

The final home weekend is here as the Purple Aces welcome Valparaiso and Loyola to Meeks Family Fieldhouse on Friday and Saturday for a pair of 7 p.m. matches.  Saturday’s match will be Senior Day as the Aces will recognize four players prior to the match – Erlicia Griffith, Jelena Merseli, Montana Schafer and Cathy Schreiber.

Evansville dropped a pair of matches last weekend against Drake and UNI, falling by 3-0 finals to both.  UE played extremely well against the Bulldogs, falling by finals of 25-22, 30-28 and 25-20.

Rocio Fortuny had her best weekend of play since missing three weeks of action from late September through mid-October.  The junior posted 12 kills in three-set matches against UNI and Drake over the weekend.  It was her best 2-match showing since last season when she notched 17 kills at Drake and 19 against Bradley.

Despite falling to Drake in three sets on Saturday, the Purple Aces managed to accumulate a total of 48 kills.  That is the most for Evansville in a 3-set match since notching 50 in three frames against Murray State on Sept. 10, 2013.

Junior Mildrelis Rodriguez is tied for second on UE’s squad in kills and is also second in digs.  She had 12 and 11 digs, respectively, over the weekend at UNI and Drake.  That translated to an average of 3.83 per set.  Rodriguez had a great weekend for the Aces as they fought Missouri State to the finish before earning a 3-0 win over Southern Illinois two weeks ago.  The Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico native averaged 4.00 kills per set while notching 2.33 digs per frame.  In the win over the Salukis she led all players with 14 kills as she also hit a solid .216.  She was second on the team with eight digs.

Valparaiso starts the weekend with a 15-13 overall mark and are 6-8 in the conference.  The Crusaders are one of the top defensive teams in the nation and lead the NCAA with 20.26 digs per set.  They are the only team in the country averaging over 20 digs per set.  Their offense is paced by Taylor Graboski, who sits with 3.02 kills per game.  Valparaiso swept the Aces by a 3-0 final in their first meeting of the season

Loyola starts play with a 3-22 record while standing at 2-12 in Valley matches.  The Ramblers have been playing better as of late and are winners of two of their last three matches.  They also battled the Aces to the finish in the October meeting in Chicago, falling in five sets.  Gabi Maciagowski leads the way with 2.80 kills per set.

The Human Rights Campaign’s 2018 Corporate Equality Index includes several Indiana law firms that are identified as advancing policies and practices to protect LGBTQ workers.

Released today, the 2018 index measures how equitably large private businesses in the United States treat their lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer employees, consumers and investors. The CEI rates companies and law firms on criteria falling under the broad categories of non-discrimination policies, employment benefits, demonstrated competency and accountability for LGBTQ inclusion, public commitment to LGBTQ equality, and responsible citizenship.

“The highly competitive legal field continues to be the sector with the largest number of top-rated employers in the Corporate Equality Index,” said Deena Fidas, director of the HRC Foundation’s Workplace Equality Program. “Law firm leaders know that LGBTQ inclusion is absolutely essential in attracting and retaining top attorneys and staff.”

A number of law firms with Indiana ties earned a score of 100, indicating they satisfied all the inclusion criteria. They are: Faegre Baker Daniels, Frost Brown Todd LLC, Hinshaw & Culbertson, Littler Mendelson PC, Ogletree Deakins Nash Smoak & Stewart, and Quarles & Brady LLP.

Two other Indiana firms — Barnes & Thornburg LLP and Ice Miller LLP — earned a score of 85.

Evansville Loyola MVC Tournament Recap

0
The University of Evansville men’s soccer team got just a single goal, but that’s all it needed, as the Purple Aces knocked off fourth seeded Loyola 1-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament quarterfinals in Peoria, Ill. Wednesday.

After playing to a scoreless stand-off in the opening half, the Aces offense began to pick up steam, with several opportunities just missing the frame. The lone tally of the game came off the foot of senior midfielder Ian McGrath (New Lenox, Ill), who was set up beautifully by junior Zac Blaydes (Midway, Ky.) and  redshirt freshman Trevor Baum (Keller, Tex.). It was McGrath’s 6th goal of the season. The New Lenox, Illinois native has scored goals in the Aces last three tournament matches going back to last year.

The final 30 minutes saw Evansville hang on for dear life, as the Ramblers threw everything but the kitchen sink at senior goalkeeper Matthew Keller (Carmel, Ind.) and the UE defense. In all, Keller faced 15 shots, three on goal while turning in his second straight clean sheet.

The Aces improve to 11-8 and 1 on the season, while Loyola season ends with a record of 7-8 and 3.

Up next for Evansville is a semifinal showdown with top seeded Missouri State. The Bears edged the Aces in the regular season, 1-0 on September 23 in Springfield. Kick-off from Shea Stadium in Peoria is at 3 pm Friday afternoon

Indiana Job Growth Strong In 2017

INDIANAPOLIS – Government officials, including Secretary of Commerce Jim Schellinger and Indiana Senate President Pro Tem David Long, R-Fort Wayne, applauded Gov. Eric Holcomb’s agenda, which they said delivered job growth to the state.

“I applaud the governor for bringing an aggressive and well-thought-out agenda to the table. The Senate continues to believe that workforce development is a critical issue for our state, and the governor’s agenda reflects that priority,” Long said in a statement after Holcomb released his 2018 agenda.

Schellinger, speaking Wednesday before the governor announced his agenda, said that job growth has been strong this year. So far, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation has secured 270 business and industry commitments to grow or locate in Indiana, creating 28,846 new positions at an average wage of $27.38.

“We rank number three in the country for our infrastructure and this is before the governor implements his Next Level growth plan at which time we will leave all of America in our rearview mirror,” Schellinger said.

However, there were some job losses. For example, Eli Lilly announced it was cutting 2,300 jobs by the end of the year and manufacturers Carrier and Rexnord have both trimmed employment.

Current IEDC trends show:

  • In the manufacturing field, 126 manufacturers have committed to growing in Indiana, together planning more than $5.2 billion in  investment which will create up to 10,259 jobs,
  • In the technology field, the IEDC has secured 58 commitments for tech firms with plans to create 6,924 high-wage Hoosier jobs,
  • In logistics, companies have committed to invest more than $343 million and create up to 2,848 jobs,
  • In international investment, 34 foreign-based companies have committed to grow in Indiana and invest more than $1 billion in the state and create up to 5,230 new jobs, and
  • In small business, the Indiana Small Business Development Center has assisted in 222 new businesses and the creation of 687 new jobs just this year.
