IS IT TRUE FOR OCTOBER 5, 2017

9

We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we as responsible citizens of this community need to address in a rational and responsible way?

IS IT TRUE we are told on Monday that the Evansville City Council will formally vote to raise the County Option Income Tax (COIT) without seeking any input or meeting directly with our elected county officials?.

IS IT TRUE its obvious that the Evansville City Council is not only practicing “taxation without representation” but also “taxation without explanation” attitude by the raising the County Option Income Tax without seeking county council members input?

IS IT TRUE we are also told that City Council will make a general statement that the $8 million dollars collected from COIT taxes will specifically be used for public safety?  …we wonder if this statement means that the majority of the COIT funds can be used to pay for city employee health insurance costs? … the devil is in the details?

IS IT TRUE don’t be surprised to hear that the county will decide to use their allocation” of COIT funds to build a new addition to the Vanderburgh County jail? … we feel compelled to warn our county officials that a new addition to the county jail will cost way more than the approx. $3 million dollars that they will receive from COIT taxes?

IS IT TRUE the taxpayers of Evansville still do not know where Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke stands on the proposed  COIT tax increase?  …we are hearing that many of the city taxpayers want to know if Mayor Winnecke is for or against the proposed County Option Income Tax increase for 2018?  …we hope that Mayor Winnecke will make a public statement if he’s for or against the COIT tax increase before City Council votes on this issue next Monday?

IS IT TRUE that our Civic Center “Moles” tell us that Mayor Winnecke has decided to not to mess with the “HOMESTEAD TAX CREDIT” in 2018?  …it looks like the Mayor made a smart political move concerning this issue?

IS IT TRUE we wonder why City Council Finance Chairman Dan McGinn (R) hasn’t informed members of City Council how much did it cost the taxpayers to subsidize the Evansville Thunderbolts operating expenses during the 2017 hockey season?

IS IT TRUE that it has been reported that the management group that is in charge of the McCurdy apartments in Downtown Evansville face a $750,000 water/sewer bill for a 5 month period starting April 1st and ending September 30th?…the bill happened as a result of The Kunkel Group’s installation of an open-loop geothermal system to heat and cool the recently embattled Riverfront building?… the City of Evansville estimates, the McCurdy sends 12 million gallons of water to the treatment plant per month, which amounts to 3 percent of the East Side treatment facility’s capacity?… This exorbitant cost has the potential to be the death knell of the McCurdy as it amounts to $150,000 per month which equates to over $1,500 per apartment per month?… The Kunkel Group is thought to have invested $10 million into redeveloping the historic building, which faces the Ohio River?…we are concerned for the future of renewable energy in Evansville, In as the rent for these apartments to sustain the operational cash flow will have to be between $2,500 and $3,000 per month for the operator to have any incentive to do anything but dump the McCurdy back onto the market at which time it will most likely sit there unoccupied for another 9 years or more?
IS IT TRUE this is the same McCurdy that former Mayor Weinzapfel consigned to a political supporter from Indianapolis right after sinking over $1.5 million taxpayer dollars into incentives and a free parking lot?…the former use was as an old folks home and the residents were forced to march up the street to another facility leaving the McCurdy to accelerate the degradation process?…we certainly hope that something can be done to correct this situation as between the electric rates, the coming oppressive water rates, and a maniacal distaste for clean renewable energy, much of Evansville’s housing stock could be rendered valueless by excessive operational costs?
FOOTNOTES: We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we as responsible citizens of this community need to address in a rational and responsible way?
Todays READERS POLL question is: Do feel that Mayor Winnecke should sit down with the Vanderburgh County elected officials to discuss the COIT taxes issue?

Washington Teachers Receive EVSC’s October Cause for Applause Award

0

Two Washington Middle School teachers – Matthew Happe and Joe Newman – are the recipients of the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation’s October Cause for Applause award. The award seeks to recognize individuals who go above and beyond their normal job responsibilities.

Happe and Newman were nominated by the staff of Washington Middle School and by Principal Michelle Branson for their efforts in turning an old health room at the school into an exercise and weight room for students and staff.

“A year and a half ago our teachers dreamed of having a place to teach students the value of fitness and to encourage our staff and students to get healthy,” wrote Michelle Branson, Washington principal. “Through Donors Choose, Facebook requests, community outreach, faculty donations and grant orders, Matt Happe and Joe Newman have fulfilled that dream.”

According to Branson, on any given day teachers will be working out before and after school and Happe will write fitness and wellness plans for staff and leave workout routines posted in the room.  The teachers also have incorporated the room in their PE curriculum to ensure students understand the proper weight lifting techniques and different types of workouts that are available.

“Their mission of healthy bodies and minds has definitely impacted both our students and faculty at Washington Middle School,” Branson wrote.

Anyone can nominate an employee of the EVSC for the award. Deadline for nominations is the third Friday of each month. To nominate an EVSC employee, go to www.evscschools.com and click on About Us and see Cause for Applause under Community. Paper forms are available at the schools for those without access to the Internet.

HOLLY’S HOUSE PARTICIPATING IN NATIONAL CAMPAIGN TO RAISE FUNDS FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SURVIVORS

0

Holly’s House is one of more than 220 nonprofits urging the public to support survivors of domestic violence and financial abuse during The Allstate Foundation Purple Purse® Challenge, which takes place Oct. 2 – 31. The annual campaign coincides with National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which is also recognized throughout October.

On an average day in 2016, 12,000 requests from domestic violence and financial abuse survivors for services such as childcare and rent went unmet as reported in National Network to End Domestic Violence’s 11th Annual Domestic Violence Counts Report

The Purple Purse Challenge provides a critical funding source for domestic violence organizations who increasingly face high demand for their services, even as they operate with limited resources.

“Domestic Violence groups rely on the public’s support to meet the needs of our clients,” said Sidney Hardgrave, Holly’s House Executive Director. “That’s why The Allstate Foundation Purple Purse Challenge is so important. This fundraising effort helps us raise money so we can keep helping survivors rebuild their lives.”

All of the funds raised by Holly’s House during the Purple Purse campaign are used to support the Client Assistance Fund which was established in 2010.  This fund is jointly managed by Holly’s House, Albion Fellows Bacon Center, Lampion Center, and the Evansville YWCA.  Over the past 7 years, this fund has provided $30,000 in direct support for over 150 survivors or domestic violence.  Common request for help include making a deposit for an apartment, car repairs, temporary child care, and relocation assistance.

Donors to the Purple Purse Challenge are assured that 100% of the funds nonprofits raise or win during the Purple Purse Challenge will go towards providing life-changing services to domestic violence survivors and their families, so they can break free and stay free from abuse.

According to the National Network to End Domestic Violence national census, Indiana served approximately 1,197 survivors of domestic violence and financial abuse in 2016

Domestic violence affects all communities. In fact, one in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime regardless of socio-economic background or ethnicity – more than breast, ovarian and lung cancer combined.

In 99 percent of domestic violence cases, victims will experience financial abuse, which means their abusers will deny them access to money and financial resources they need to break free. Financial abuse is one of the primary reasons domestic violence victims stay in or return to abusive relationships. Without resources of their own, victims are often unable to care for themselves and their families, find employment and housing, or save for the future.

The Purple Purse Challenge provides several opportunities for nonprofits to exceed their fundraising goals. For example, the nonprofit in each division that raises the most money will receive a $100,000 grant. Additional grants range from $50,000 for second place to $5,000 for seventh place. There are also weekly bonus challenges.

And to further boost their fundraising efforts, nonprofits will receive a purple purse designed by tennis champion and Purple Purse ambassador, Serena Williams. Handcrafted from premium Italian leather, the limited-edition purse is valued at $400. Holly’s House will feature the purse at an auction that will be held at their annual Hats Off to Holly’s House event in April, 2018, In addition to the local fundraiser, one individual from all donors to the Purple Purse Challenge on PurplePurse.com each week will win a purse in a random drawing.

While purses are available in limited supply, individuals can show their support for survivors by purchasing Purple Purse charms through PurplePurse.com between Oct. 2 and Oct. 31. Each charm cost $10 and comes with a short story about a domestic violence survivor who used financial resources to regain her independence. Proceeds from charm sales benefit 2017 Allstate Foundation Purple Purse Challenge participants.

The Allstate Foundation Purple Purse Challenge is administered by CrowdRise and is part of Allstate Foundation Purple Purse, a public education and fundraising program aimed at raising awareness of the prevalence of domestic violence and financial abuse and the need for resources to help survivors. Now in its 13th year, Allstate Foundation Purple Purse has propelled more than 1 million survivors on the path to safety and security, and invested more than $55 million to empower women to break free from abuse through life-changing financial education, job training and readiness and small business programs for survivors.

U. S. Post Office and Customs House by Pat Sides

1

One of the oldest buildings in downtown Evansville is the former U. S. Post Office and Customs House on NW Second Street. Completed in 1879 at a cost of $200,000, this striking example of Ruskinian Gothic architecture endures as a city landmark. Over the decades, it has housed the U. S. Post Office, a Federal Court and Customs House, the U. S. Weather Bureau, and other federal offices.

This photograph was recorded during the initial construction of the building which began about 1873.  Vacated by the federal government in 1969, the building, now known as Old Post Office Place, has since housed a variety of shops, offices, and restaurants.
