Harley is a 6-year-old male Chihuahua. He and 12 other small dogs came from a backyard breeder in Boonville who passed away. All of the dogs lived outside, inter-breeding without limits, so he’s doing better with pottytraining but will still need some help. Believe it or not, Harley is our longest canine resident! This will include their spay or neuter, microchip, vaccines, and more. Contact Vanderburgh Humane at (812) 426-2563 for adoption details!

Buehler’s IGA To Close Making The Jacobsville Neighborhood A Food Desert

0
Buehler’s IGA in the Jacobsville neighborhood of Evansville is closing, leaving families with few options for fresh produce, and grocery store options.

The announcement came Tuesday, but many are just learning of the grocers closing. Buehler’s IGA has adjusted hours, 8 am to 6pm daily, and is expected to close after the holidays.

Owned by The Houchens Food Group, the company says high theft, and low sales at Buehler’s IGA are the reason for the closing.

Jobs for the 24 employees will be relocated, but a store manager says the closing is hard.

“It’s sad that we all… we can’t work here anymore because we were all family.”

The stores closing affects hundreds in the Jacobsville neighborhood as many people walk, bike, or bus to the local store.

When fresh food, or groceries are more than one miles away, the neighborhood is considered a food desert.

Jacobsville neighborhood improvement association president Melissa Tines worked to bring awareness to the possibility of the IGA closing, but the company still decided it will close the neighborhood grocery store.

Tines says help from community members can prevent closings like these that affect low-income families.

Families should prepare for alternative options for getting food in the house such as carpooling, using the city bus, or cabs.

The next closest grocer is more than two miles away; The Save-A-Lot at Diamond Avenue, and Wesselman’s on Fulton avenue.

Jacobsville neighborhood improvement association president Melissa Tines encourages anyone to join monthly meetings held every third Tuesday, or reach out to their Facebook page for more information.

“This is all the more reason to come to your neighborhood association meetings, get involved with your city council, and with local businesses.”

USI Fraternity Placed on Interim Suspension

0
A University of Southern Indiana fraternity is placed on interim suspension after alcohol and hazing violations.

The University is currently investigating the Indiana Lambda chapter of the Phi Delta Theta for allegedly violating USI’s Student Rights and Responsibilities Code of Student Behavior, specifically violations to alcohol and hazing.

The University says given the severity of the allegations and to ensure safety, Phi Delta Theta is placed on temporary student organization suspensions until the end of the investigation and pending any disciplinary action.

The University is working with officials at the fraternity’s national headquarters.

Support For Cold Beer Sales Falls Short

0

By Makenna Mays
TheStatehouseFile.com

INDIANAPOLIS – The Alcohol Code Revision Commission voted 8-7 in favor of cold beer sales on Friday, but that wasn’t good enough.

The committee, which has been reviewing the state’s alcohol laws since late summer, needed a majority of the 17 members or nine votes. Because two members were absent the measure failed to pass.

So the report that will go to the Indiana General Assembly will not recommend that state laws are changed to allow businesses outside of package liquor stores to sell refrigerated beer.

“I think there were a number of close votes and I think that’s reflective of what you see in the General Assembly as well on a lot of these issues which shows how tough these issues really are,” said Beverly Gard, chair of the commission.

In a previous meeting, lawmakers agreed that Indiana should allow alcohol sales on Sunday, but disagreed about who should be able to sell cold beer. Indiana is the only state that regulates beer based on temperature.

“It’s my feeling that if we don’t go ahead and pass some proposed legislation dealing with cold beer that the legislature is just going to keep kicking the can down the road,” said Gard. “I watched that happen for 24 years.”

Jay Ricker, convenience store owner, went before the committee to express his support for cold beer sales.

“From the very beginning of this discussion our position has been very clear, we only want the right to expand the options we offer to consumers, not to have new products, just to sell it cold,” Ricker said.

Ricker was a catalyst for the review of cold beer sales regulations after he set up a restaurant in a couple of his convenience stores and obtained a liquor license, allowing him to sell the brew cold.

On Friday, the final meeting of the commission, lawmakers were at odds over whether the sale of cold beer would allow for an increase in sales or if it would simply provide a better service for customers. Others were adamant that public policy should be a driving factor of the vote, but simply did not have enough input from the public.

“My position on this is quite different than I ever anticipated it would be,” Gard said. “The public hasn’t weighed in on this and when you have all special interest groups driving the policy, with no public input, you’re probably not going to come out with the result that the general public wants.”

In other action, the commission approved an amendment to preliminary drafts that would increase excise taxes on beer, wine and liquor and put the increase in the administration and enforcement fund.

The final report will now go to the General Assembly for consideration. If any of the proposed legislation were to pass, changes would not take affect until July of 2019.
