St. Vincent Evansville Trauma Center is hosting its “Standing Together to Prevent Falls” event for older adult

                 Tuesday, December 12, 2017,      9 a.m.-2 p.m.

St. Vincent Evansville Manor Auditorium, 3700 Washington Avenue, Evansville

DETAILS:

Many older adults believe falling is a normal part of the aging process. The winter months can also increase one’s chances of being injured, but by following certain safety guidelines, falls can be avoided. The St. Vincent Trauma Center staff is helping older adults avoid injuries due to falls by hosting its “Standing Together to Prevent Falls” event.

Participants will receive information about home safety tips, how proper nutrition can help prevent falls, the important role vision plays and how certain exercises can improve balance and coordination. St. Vincent pharmacists will be available to review medication lists to determine how they might contribute to the risk of falls in addition to a question and answer period following the presentation.

This event is free and lunch will be provided. Registration is required by contacting Mary Raley, Injury Prevention Coordinator, St. Vincent Evansville, at 812-485-6827 or mhraley@ascension.org.

McGrath and Waever named All-West Region

0

Senior midfielder Ian McGrath and sophomore defender Simon Waever have both been named United Soccer Coaches All-West Region, it was announced in a release Monday. McGrath earned first-team all-region honors, while Waever was selected to the all-region second team.

A native of New Lenox, Illinois, McGrath earns his second all-region honor of his career after a stellar senior campaign for the Purple Aces. McGrath becomes the 15th Evansville men’s soccer student-athlete to earn multiple first-team all-region honors and the first since Cory Elenio completed the feat in 2006 and 2007.  This season, the senior led the way for the Aces with 12 goals and six assists on the season, while capturing first-team all-MVC honors. In his career, McGrath scored 26 goals, putting him in a tie for ninth all-time at Evansville.

“Ian has had a fantastic career as a Purple Ace.  He has gotten better each year and improved his game during his time in our program,” said Aces head coach Marshall Ray.  “His numbers reflect how important of a player he was for us.  He is one of the elite college soccer players competing at the Division I level.  I am excited for Ian and know that he will represent our program well as he continues his soccer career.”

Waever receives his first all-region honor after continuing to impress in his sophomore season. In just his second year with the Aces, Waever continues to compile accolades as he earned first-team all-MVC recognition in November. The Holte, Denmark native scored a goal and record an assist in 2017, while anchoring an Aces backline that has amassed a 1.70 goals-against average.

“Simon grew in confidence this season and was a very important attacking option for us in wide areas,” said Ray. “He was outstanding in the latter portions of the season on both sides of the ball and was a big part of our success as we moved into postseason play.  With Simon on the field, we always had a chance to create scoring opportunities as well as lock down the other team’s attack.  Simon and his class are the foundation for this team and will grow into leaders on and off the field for us this spring.”

For the second-straight season, the Aces finished with 10 or more wins as Evansville amassed an 11-8-2 overall record and advanced to the semifinals of the MVC Tournament.

No. 20 Kentucky next up for Aces

0

Wrapping-up a three-game road trip, the University of Evansville women’s basketball team travels to Lexington, Kentucky to take on 20th-ranked Kentucky at 6 p.m. (CT) on Tuesday night.

Evansville is coming off an 82-73 loss on Saturday afternoon on the road at Austin Peay. The Aces led 23-20 after the first quarter before the Governors mounted an 11-0 run and took a 35-34 lead to the half. Austin Peay increased its lead as high as 17 in the early portion of the fourth quarter, but the Aces roared back to cut it to single digits late as the Governors held on for an 82-73 win. Graduate guard Hannah Noe recorded the second-most points in her career with a 29-point outing that earned her Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week honors. The Dexter, Missouri native knocked-down six triples in the loss, while playing just shy of 40 minutes in the contest. Joining Noe in double figures was senior guard Brooke Dossett who tallied 10 points, adding four rebounds and four assists.

Noe has started off her Purple Aces career well, holding the MVC’s best scoring average with 18.2 points per game and leading the conference in three-pointers made per game with 3.7, good enough to put her 11th nationally.

No. 20 Kentucky enters the week with a 7-1 record and coming off a split last week. The Wildcats opened the week on Thursday with a 90-63 loss on the road at the ninth-ranked Baylor before earning an 82-54 win inside Memorial Coliseum on Sunday. Kentucky a trio of players averaging double-digits, led by junior guard Maci Morris, who is averaging 16.3 points per contest and has hit a team-best 23 tree-pointers.

Tuesday’s matchups marks the third meeting between the two sides with Evansville owning a 2-0 advantage in the series. The Aces earned a 78-72 victory over the Wildcats in the first-ever contest between the two on Dec. 22, 2001 in Lexington before capturing a 70-66 triumph over Kentucky in the last matchup on Dec. 4, 2002.

USI’s Dahlstrom nets another GLVC Player of Week honor

0

For the second time in three weeks, University of Southern Indiana senior forward Morgan Dahlstrom (Grayslake, Illinois) has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week for Women’s Basketball.

Dahlstrom averaged 26.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game to lead the No. 14 Screaming Eagles to GLVC wins over Lewis University and the University of Indianapolis.

In USI’s 67-56 win over Lewis Thursday, Dahlstrom racked up 17 points and six rebounds. She had 15 of those 17 points in the second half as USI held off a Lewis rally to earn the win.

Earning her third career GLVC Player of the Week honor, Dahlstrom finished the week with a career-high 35 points to go along with nine rebounds and two blocks in USI’s 73-66 road win over UIndy. She was 15-of-20 (.750) from the field and 5-of-6 (.833) from the free throw line as USI rallied from a nine-point first-quarter deficit to earn the win.

For the week, Dahlstrom went 20-of-28 (.714) from the field and 12-of-14 (.857) from the free throw line as USI improved to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in GLVC play.

On the year, Dahlstrom is second on the team and fourth in the GLVC with 18.3 points per game. She also is second in the conference with a team-high 9.8 rebounds per appearance.

Statement on Fraternity Investigation

0

After a thorough investigation, the University of Southern Indiana has withdrawn recognition and Phi Delta Theta’s General Headquarters has removed the charter of the Indiana Lambda chapter of Phi Delta Theta due to violations of The University of Southern Indiana Student Rights and Responsibilities: Code of Student Behavior handbook. Student safety is of paramount importance to the University and members of the chapter have shown a pattern of disregard related to alcohol and hazing policies.

Despite corrective actions, past probations and a suspension, these issues have proven to be systemic in nature and have not been corrected; therefore, the removal of Phi Delta Theta’s recognition and charter is justified.

White Swan Laundry by Pat Sides

0

In December 1937, White Swan Laundry hired Santa to tout its delivery service as “a Christmas gift for her.” At four cents per pound of laundry, the weekly service was a time-saving bargain for busy housewives throughout the year. The company, located at NW Second and Ingle streets, was founded in 1893, one of the first professional steam laundries to open in Evansville. White Swan soon boasted over 100 employees and 17 motor routes, eventually expanding its services to customers in Henderson, Kentucky. The laundry was sold in 1980, and the building was razed in 1996. At the bottom of the picture, the shadow of photographer Edgar W. Newman can be seen; his series of Santa shots, taken at different venues in the city, appeared in the Evansville Press that December.
